True Faith: Beyond Rituals to Genuine Righteousness
Devotional
Day 1: Genuine Faith Over Rituals
God desires a heart that seeks justice, mercy, and humility over mere religious rituals. Outward religiosity without inward transformation is empty and displeasing to God. True religion involves caring for the needy and living a life of genuine faith. The people of Israel were engaging in religious activities like fasting, but their hearts were far from God. They were more concerned with outward appearances than with true righteousness. God desires a heart that seeks justice, mercy, and humility, rather than one that merely goes through the motions of religious observance. The Pharisees in Jesus' time exemplified this disconnect, as they were criticized for their outward religiosity but inward spiritual emptiness. [05:23]
Isaiah 1:16-17 (ESV): "Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause."
Reflection: In what ways can you move beyond mere religious rituals to truly seek justice and mercy in your daily life?
Day 2: Fasting as a Path to Justice
Fasting should not be used as a means to manipulate God but as a way to deny the flesh and draw closer to Him. True fasting involves acts of kindness and justice, reflecting a heart aligned with God's desires. The people of Israel were engaging in fasting, but their actions did not reflect a heart aligned with God's desires. True fasting, as God defines it, involves acts of kindness and justice, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and freeing the oppressed. These actions reflect a heart aligned with God's desires and lead to a deeper communion with Him. [09:46]
Zechariah 7:9-10 (ESV): "Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart."
Reflection: How can you incorporate acts of kindness and justice into your life as a form of true fasting?
Day 3: The Sabbath as a Joyful Rest
The Sabbath is a sign of God's covenant with Israel, meant to be a day of rest and worship. It should be a delight, not a burden, offering an opportunity to draw closer to God and enjoy His presence. The Sabbath, a sign of God's covenant with Israel, is meant to be a delight, a day set apart for rest and worship. It is not a burden but an opportunity to draw closer to God. By setting aside time to rest and worship, we can experience the joy and peace that comes from being in God's presence. [14:54]
Isaiah 56:6-7 (ESV): "And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant—these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples."
Reflection: How can you make the Sabbath a day of delight and joy in your life, rather than a burden?
Day 4: The Power of Intercession
God seeks intercessors who will stand in the gap and pray for others. Intercession is a powerful tool that can bring about God's mercy and grace, even in times of judgment. Despite the challenges and temptations we face, God promises to raise a standard against the enemy and bring salvation. When we align our actions with His heart, He will guide and bless us, and our light will shine brightly. [39:12]
Ezekiel 22:30 (ESV): "And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none."
Reflection: Who in your life can you stand in the gap for through prayer today?
Day 5: God's Promise of Salvation
Despite the challenges and temptations we face, God promises to raise a standard against the enemy and bring salvation. When we align our actions with His heart, He will guide and bless us, and our light will shine brightly. God promises that when we align our actions with His heart, our light will shine, and He will guide and bless us. This promise of salvation is a reminder of God's faithfulness and His desire to bring us into a deeper relationship with Him. [46:21]
Isaiah 59:19 (ESV): "So they shall fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the Lord drives."
Reflection: What steps can you take today to align your actions with God's heart and experience His guidance and blessing?

Sermon Clips
God is asking Isaiah to make this loud proclamation to the people show my people their transgression and the house of Jacob their sins now there is an endeavor today to sort of water down sin and transgressions but God is telling the Prophet shout it with all your mind cry aloud don't spare lift up your voice like a trumpet to show the people their transgression and the house of Jacob their sins. [00:00:42]
Now the people had a lot of what you might call religiosity they were doing the right things but their heart was not right before the Lord God said they seek me daily and delight to know my ways a nation that did righteousness and forsook not the ordinance of their God they asked of me the ordinances of justice and they take delight in approaching to god that was outward they had the outward signs of religion. [00:01:29]
The Pharisees came under greater condemnation by Jesus than any other group because it was an outward form of religion but there was nothing truly in their heart but bitterness and criticism and pride spiritual pride and and so Jesus so often used the Pharisees at its a bad example and he said to his disciples unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees you will in no wise enter the kingdom of heaven. [00:04:23]
The purpose of their fast was was to get things from God now that is a lot of motive behind people fasting today they're there wanting to use it as a means of obligating God to somehow answer or to fulfill their desires and so they fast in order to get from God rather than just fast thing to deny the flesh in order that they might just experience more time in the spirit. [00:06:34]
The Lord said the fast that I have chosen is to loose the bands of wickedness to undo the heavy burdens to let the oppressed go free and that you break every yoke that's what I desire the Lord said is your kindness to other people to help those that are in need and it is to deal your bread to the hungry it's not just that you go without bread take your bread and feed the poor. [00:09:46]
God's desire is for our helping the less fortunate and that's the kind of fast that God would have us to do to free men from the heavy burdens to feed the poor to clothe the naked and God said that he would acknowledge and recognize that and then you will call and the Lord will answer you will cry and he will say Here I am you will come into real fellowship and communion with God. [00:11:09]
If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath from doing your pleasure on my holy day and called the Sabbath a delight the holy of the Lord honorable and shall honor him not doing your own ways nor finding your own pleasure nor speaking your own words so God has asked for one day in seven remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy giving the Lord a day. [00:13:39]
The Sabbath day and the keeping of the Sabbath day was something that God established with the nation of Israel to be the sign perpetually of the Covenant that God had made with them that they would be God's covenant people relating to God through the law now in the book of Hebrews it talks about the Old Covenant and why it failed and how this new covenant that we have in Christ is so much better. [00:19:44]
God speaks of the Sabbath day and he said then shall you delight yourself in the Lord I will cause you to write on the high places of the earth I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it so cry aloud Isaiah tell the people that their form of godliness is it sufficient you need to have a real relationship with God. [00:20:22]
God is saying it's not my problem it's not that my hand is short and I cannot say it's not that I don't hear it isn't that my ear is heavy and I cannot hear but it is your iniquities that have separated you and God your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear it's not that he cannot hear he will not hear because of your sins and iniquities. [00:24:29]
God wanted to forbear Judgment God delights in mercy God delights in grace God would much rather forgive you than punish you and here the people really were deserving punishment and God wanted to show His grace and mercy he needed an excuse to do it he needed for some man who would stand there as an intercessor who would stand in the gap between God and man the gap that was created by man's sin. [00:38:14]
We face a powerful enemy who many times seeks to overwhelm us like a flood the Bible speaks about the wiles of the devil he's a very wily person deceitful he makes sin to look very attractive and alluring he's a clever fisherman he knows how to make alluring bait but there's always a hook and men are attracted to sin and they don't look always at the consequence and the possible consequence of their actions.
