True Discipleship: The Path of Enduring Obedience

Summary

In today's exploration of John 8:31, we delve into the essence of true discipleship. Jesus' words, "If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed," serve as a profound reminder that genuine faith is not merely a verbal profession but a life marked by enduring obedience to Christ's teachings. This enduring faith is a gift from God, not a product of human effort, and it manifests in a pattern of loving obedience to His commands. The call to examine ourselves, as Paul urges in 2 Corinthians 13:5, is crucial in discerning the authenticity of our faith. Throughout the Gospels, we see examples of superficial belief, where individuals are drawn to Jesus for miracles or benefits but fall away when faced with the demands of true discipleship.

The parables of the soils, the wheat and tares, and the dragnet illustrate the reality that not all who profess faith are genuine disciples. True discipleship is characterized by perseverance, a continual pattern of obedience, and a life built on the solid foundation of Christ's teachings. This is not about achieving sinlessness but about a consistent, visible pattern of obedience born out of love for the Savior.

The benefits of true discipleship are profound: knowing the truth and experiencing true freedom. In a world where people tirelessly seek truth and freedom in various pursuits, Jesus offers the ultimate truth and liberation from the bondage of sin. This freedom is not just from sin's penalty but also from its power and deception. Jesus' invitation to come to Him for rest and freedom from the burdens of legalism and works-based righteousness is a call to embrace the gospel and find true liberation in Him.

As we reflect on these truths, we are reminded that true discipleship involves a humble acceptance of our sinfulness, a surrender to Christ's lordship, and a commitment to follow Him in loving obedience. The mark of a true believer is not a past emotional experience but a life that continually abides in His word, demonstrating the enduring faith that God has planted in our hearts.

Day 1: Enduring Obedience as True Discipleship
True discipleship is not just about professing faith verbally; it is about living a life of enduring obedience to Christ's teachings. This enduring faith is a divine gift, manifesting in a consistent pattern of loving obedience to His commands. Jesus emphasizes that abiding in His word is the hallmark of true discipleship, distinguishing genuine believers from those with superficial faith. This call to obedience is not about achieving perfection but about a sincere commitment to follow Christ's teachings out of love for Him. [08:41]

John 15:10-11 (ESV): "If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full."

Reflection: In what specific ways can you demonstrate loving obedience to Christ's teachings in your daily life this week?

Day 2: Perseverance in True Discipleship
The parables of the soils, the wheat and tares, and the dragnet illustrate that not all who profess faith are genuine disciples. True discipleship is characterized by perseverance and a life built on the solid foundation of Christ's teachings. These parables serve as a reminder that genuine faith is not a fleeting emotion but a steadfast commitment to follow Christ, even when faced with challenges. The call to persevere is a call to build one's life on the teachings of Jesus, ensuring that faith is not superficial but deeply rooted in His word. [06:01]

Hebrews 10:36 (ESV): "For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised."

Reflection: What challenges are you currently facing that test your perseverance in faith, and how can you rely on Christ's teachings to overcome them?

Day 3: Freedom in Christ
The benefits of true discipleship include knowing the truth and experiencing true freedom. In a world where people tirelessly seek truth and freedom in various pursuits, Jesus offers the ultimate truth and liberation from the bondage of sin. This freedom is not just from sin's penalty but also from its power and deception. Jesus invites us to come to Him for rest and freedom from the burdens of legalism and works-based righteousness, offering a life of true liberation in Him. [25:45]

Galatians 5:1 (ESV): "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."

Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you feel burdened by legalism or works-based righteousness? How can you embrace the freedom that Christ offers?

Day 4: Humble Acceptance and Surrender
True discipleship involves a humble acceptance of our sinfulness, a surrender to Christ's lordship, and a commitment to follow Him in loving obedience. The mark of a true believer is not a past emotional experience but a life that continually abides in His word. This involves recognizing our need for a Savior and willingly submitting to His authority, allowing His teachings to guide our lives. It is through this humble surrender that we experience the transformative power of His grace. [18:18]

James 4:7-8 (ESV): "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to Jesus? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits?

Day 5: Examining the Authenticity of Our Faith
The call to examine ourselves, as Paul urges, is crucial in discerning the authenticity of our faith. Genuine faith is not a past emotional experience but a life that demonstrates the enduring faith God has planted in our hearts. This involves a continual self-examination to ensure that our faith is not superficial but deeply rooted in Christ's teachings. By examining our lives, we can identify areas where we need to grow and seek God's guidance to strengthen our faith. [33:04]

2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV): "Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!"

Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your spiritual journey. Are there areas where you feel your faith is superficial? How can you deepen your relationship with Christ to ensure your faith is genuine?

Quotes

Among the verses that just leaps off that page, especially for us who have memorized this verse, is verse 31, when Jesus said to those Jews who professed a belief in him, he said this, if you abide or if you continue in my word, then you are disciples indeed. [00:02:14] (23 seconds)

And when Jesus spoke these words by implication, there's another truth that is stated, isn't there? And that is that there are many who make a profession of a belief in Christ who are not truly disciples. And so in this verse, the subject matter is this, who are true disciples? [00:02:36] (19 seconds)

And all through the Gospel of John up until chapter 8, we have examples of those who were true believers, who were true followers of Christ, such as the apostles in chapter 1, who truly followed and literally followed Jesus. And then we also have examples, especially in chapter 6, of many who professed a belief in Jesus, but who turned away. [00:03:16] (24 seconds)

Some of the seed falls in the weedy soil, and it's choked out, representing the cares of this world, the riches of this world. And so Jesus, in describing his kingdom, makes it clear that not all who make a profession of faith are truly his disciples. [00:05:38] (17 seconds)

If you continue in my word, then you are truly disciples of mine. If you continue. That word continue is a word that means persevering, enduring. It speaks of an enduring faith. And it's enduring faith because it's God's gift. It's not a faith of my flesh because my flesh is better than the next man or woman's. [00:09:39] (29 seconds)

To continue in the word speaks of a pattern of obedience to all that Christ has commanded. To continue to lovingly obey the Lord. And the New Testament makes that clear. What did the Great Commission say? The Great Commission says, go ye into all the world and do what? Teach all things, teach them to observe all things which I have commanded you. [00:10:27] (25 seconds)

And that is the pattern. That is a continual pattern of my life. It doesn't mean I live a life of sinlessness on this world. But that's the pattern of my life. And it's visible. Now, I want to read a few verses of scripture that verify this. And I don't want your eyes to glaze over. [00:11:32] (16 seconds)

For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. In other words, you want to know who I have a relationship with? Brother, sister, mother. Who I have a relationship with? I have a relationship with whoever does the will of my Father in heaven. [00:13:22] (17 seconds)

So when you and I are obeying the word of God, when the pattern of my life is in obedience to the word of God, we are giving evidence of a genuine love that was born in us through regeneration. That we've been saved, because love shows itself. The Holy Spirit shows itself in love. He shed abroad his love in our hearts. [00:15:00] (18 seconds)

The biblical evidence for salvation is loving obedience to the Father. It is keeping his commandments. We are marked by our perseverance. Right? So, going back to that question, we've had those conversations. What about so-and-so? What about this person who came in for a few weeks and walked down and signed a card, and now they're living their life as if nothing had changed? [00:17:44] (29 seconds)

Enduring faith is only enduring faith because it's the work that God's done in our heart. It's the faith that he has planted in our hearts. That's why Satan couldn't do a number on Job and destroy his faith, because what God had done in his heart. That's why the Apostle Paul could continue to proclaim the gospel to the very end of his life. [00:18:22] (24 seconds)

You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. All right? Those are the benefits of true discipleship, knowing truth and freedom. Wouldn't you say those are two things that the whole world is pursuing? Knowing truth and freedom. People, I think people's existence is exhausted pursuing truth and freedom.
