Psalm 23 puts the Lord right in the middle of a worn-out soul. The Shepherd leads, restores, protects, feeds, and brings His sheep home. Third John 2 ties the prosperity of life to the prosperity of the soul, because the soul is the mind, will, and emotions. A mind that is messed up, a will that is off course, and emotions that are running the show will keep producing wrong choices and wrong results.
The contrast is not between having emotions and having no emotions. The issue is whether emotions follow the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, or whether emotions lead the whole life. Circumstances, hormones, news reports, and pressure can move emotions all over the place. The presence of God, the joy of the Lord, and the Word of God can also affect emotions, but from the inside out.
The Shepherd restores the weary soul by bringing it back, refreshing it, reviving it, and renewing it. Weariness shows up when joy, passion, hunger for God, and encouragement begin to drain away, leaving a person just going through the motions. God never intended for His people to live in their own strength. The answer for a tired soul is not always more activity. The answer is getting closer to the Shepherd.
The Shepherd also heals wounded sheep. Wounds can carry rejection, betrayal, grief, disappointment, and regret, while the enemy tries to turn a wound into an infection. God does not tell wounded people to pretend nothing happened. God applies healing oil, cleanses the infection, and forms scars that testify, “The Shepherd got me through it.” Forgiveness, surrender, time, and a return to the Shepherd become part of that healing process.
Sheep also wander. Wandering may happen loudly, quietly, gradually, or through drifting away from prayer, church, obedience, and holy living. Christ goes after the one because no wandering sheep is too far away to be restored. Repentance is not merely turning away from sin. Repentance is turning back to the Shepherd, where refreshing waits.
The valley is real, but it is temporary. Shadows can frighten, but shadows cannot harm. The Shepherd’s rod protects against the wolf, and His staff gently pulls the sheep back into place. God may change circumstances, but often He restores the soul by changing the person while the valley is still being walked through. The gate remains open, the oil remains ready, and the Shepherd still says, “Come home.”

Key Takeaways
- 1. Emotions should follow, not lead The contrast between emotional honesty and emotional control is important. Emotions are real, but they are fickle and cannot be trusted to direct a life. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit must lead first, so that emotions can come into agreement with truth rather than dictate choices. [50:29]
- 2. Wounds need healing, not hiding The Shepherd does not ignore wounds, and He does not ask wounded sheep to deny that pain has affected them. The danger is not simply that a wound hurts, but that it becomes infected through bitterness, isolation, or continual fixation on the hurt. A scar becomes evidence that pain did not get the final word. [55:27]
- 3. Repentance turns back to the Shepherd Wandering is not always dramatic rebellion. A soul can drift through neglected prayer, compromised obedience, resentment, or slow distance from God’s presence. Christ does not receive the returning sheep with rejection, but with restoration, refreshing, and a place back in the Father’s house. [64:43]
- 4. Valleys are temporary, shadows cannot harm The valley may be dark, but it is never outside the Shepherd’s presence. The shadow can make a small thing look bigger than it is, yet fear loses its grip when the sheep looks at the Shepherd instead of staring at the shadow. God often restores trust and faith while the path still runs through hard places.
