Psalm 37 sets the whole thing on a big beautiful promise: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Delight in the Lord means more than getting spiritual stuff done. Delight means seeing God for who God is, rearranging life around him like a person rearranges life around someone deeply loved. God gives true desires in his time, purifies desires that have gone sideways, and plants desires that are not yet wanted but are deeply good.

The doctrine of the Trinity sits right at the core of that delight. Jesus gives the church the Trinity. Sin is broken relationship. Sin is friction in a world made to run friction-free. Sin is like a scoop full of sand in the gas tank: the engine still runs, but it grinds, damages, and wears everything down. Sin breaks worship, breaks people, breaks bodies, breaks politics, breaks economics, and finally brings death.

Final forever forgiveness is God’s repair power through the cross of Jesus. Christ forgives sin, washes it away, reconciles what was separated, and restores what was broken. In Christ, a person is not riding the exhausting roller coaster of religion, getting closer and farther based on performance. In Christ means a giant red dot on the mall map of the cosmos says, “You are here,” right in the land of the Trinity.
