Transforming Worry into Prayer: Embracing God's Power
Summary
In today's gathering, we explored the profound connection between worry and prayer, emphasizing that both require the same energy. When we worry, we focus on our limitations, but when we pray, we shift our focus to God's limitless power. This shift is crucial because if we rely solely on our strength, we are bound to feel overwhelmed. However, when we trust in God as our source of strength, we can experience a peace that surpasses all understanding, as promised in Philippians 4:6.
We delved into the prayer of Jabez, a man mentioned briefly in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, who prayed for God's blessing, expanded influence, divine presence, and protection. Despite his name meaning "pain," Jabez chose to live honorably and sought God's favor. His story reminds us that God uses imperfect people to accomplish great things, not because of their greatness but because of His grace.
Jabez's prayer is a model for us to follow. We can ask God to bless us, not out of arrogance, but to be a blessing to others. We can pray for expanded influence, not for personal gain, but to further God's kingdom. We must seek God's presence, for without it, our efforts are in vain. Lastly, we can ask for protection, acknowledging that pain is a part of life, but trusting that God is faithful and will strengthen us.
As we reflect on Jabez's prayer, we are encouraged to move towards God in prayer, allowing Him to transform our worries into opportunities for His work in our lives. This transformation is not about God moving towards us, but about us moving towards Him, aligning our hearts with His purpose.
Key Takeaways:

Devotional
Day 1: Transforming Worry into Prayer
When we worry, we expend energy focusing on our limitations and the challenges that seem insurmountable. However, prayer invites us to redirect that energy towards God, acknowledging His limitless power and sovereignty. This shift in focus is crucial because it allows us to experience the peace that God promises, a peace that surpasses all understanding. By choosing prayer over worry, we open ourselves to God's presence and His ability to work in our lives in ways we cannot imagine. This transformation is not about God moving towards us, but about us moving towards Him, aligning our hearts with His purpose. [31:22]
Isaiah 26:3-4 (ESV): "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock."
Reflection: What is one specific worry you can turn into a prayer today, trusting God to handle it with His limitless power?
Day 2: Embracing the Prayer of Jabez
Jabez, whose name means "pain," chose to live honorably and sought God's favor through prayer. His prayer for blessing, expanded influence, divine presence, and protection serves as a model for us. Despite his circumstances, Jabez believed in God's ability to use imperfect people for His purposes. This story reminds us that our limitations do not define us; rather, it is God's grace that empowers us to accomplish great things. By following Jabez's example, we can ask God to bless us, not for personal gain, but to be a blessing to others and further His kingdom. [37:33]
1 Chronicles 4:9-10 (ESV): "Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, 'Because I bore him in pain.' Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, 'Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!' And God granted what he asked."
Reflection: How can you incorporate the elements of Jabez's prayer into your own prayers, seeking God's favor to be a blessing to others?
Day 3: Blessing to Bless Others
Asking for God's blessing is not about seeking personal gain or comfort. Instead, it is about positioning ourselves to be conduits of His love and grace to those around us. When we seek God's favor, we should do so with the intention of furthering His kingdom and serving others. This mindset shifts our focus from self-centered desires to a broader vision of impacting the world for God's glory. By aligning our prayers with God's purposes, we become active participants in His work, using the blessings we receive to bless others. [44:22]
2 Corinthians 9:8 (ESV): "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work."
Reflection: In what ways can you use the blessings you have received to serve and bless others in your community today?
Day 4: Seeking God's Presence
Without God's presence, our efforts are in vain. Just as branches must remain connected to the vine to bear fruit, we must remain in God to experience His power and guidance. This connection empowers us to ask for what we need, knowing He will respond. Seeking God's presence is about cultivating a relationship with Him, where we are attuned to His voice and aligned with His will. It is through this relationship that we find the strength and wisdom to navigate life's challenges and fulfill our purpose. [52:43]
John 15:4-5 (ESV): "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
Reflection: How can you intentionally seek God's presence in your daily routine, ensuring that your efforts are aligned with His will?
Day 5: Trusting God Through Pain
Pain is an inevitable part of life, but how we deal with it matters to God. By praying for protection and trusting in God's faithfulness, we can overcome the lies of the enemy and embrace the strength and hope God provides. This trust does not eliminate pain but transforms it into an opportunity for growth and deeper reliance on God. As we navigate life's challenges, we are reminded that God is with us, providing the strength we need to endure and the hope to persevere. [55:54]
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (ESV): "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Reflection: What is one area of pain or struggle in your life where you can invite God to provide His strength and hope today?
Quotes
Worrying seems to come so natural, doesn't it? I mean, you don't even have to go to school to learn how to worry. Our children learn how to worry real young. And we take that on throughout our lifetimes. But today. If you tend to be a worrier, I have some good news for you today. Worry and prayer are very similar. It takes the same energy. If you can worry, you can pray. [00:30:34] (34 seconds)
Now, Jabez is a good reminder of what the Lord is up to, what he's been doing since the very beginning of time. It's recorded in 2 Chronicles 16, verse 9. It says, For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. God knew about Jabez from the tribe of Judah, and God knows about you, and God knows about me from the tribe of whatever, and we're probably a pain too. [00:40:39] (35 seconds)
Jabez didn't allow his name, or his pain, or his circumstances to define who he was. He chose to be honorable and to put God first in his life. He chose to be God's witness to God's change as a God. his life. And so he prayed this, oh, that you would bless me. Can you ask God to do that? Can you ask God to bless you? Doesn't that sound kind of arrogant? [00:43:28] (21 seconds)
When we ask for God's blessing, we are crying out for the wonderful, unlimited goodness that only God has the power to know about or to give us. For many, many years, we had a sign on the side of town, right here by the canal, that said, opportunities. Unlimited. I think they took that sign down. I couldn't find it. I was looking for it. Is it still there? [00:45:23] (30 seconds)
God wants to bless us, but we get this all messed up. And we think we deserve to be blessed or we demand God to bless. And some people have turned this into a name it and claim it thing. See, he wants us to ask him to bless and then he will because he has to. He said he would and God's not a liar. [00:46:24] (22 seconds)
Jabez goes on to pray, Enlarge my territory. In other words, to expand my influence. Jabez knew that whoever was the landowner could determine how the people on the land lived. And so he wanted his territory to be enlarged, not so that he could be a big shot. Jabez was an honorable man. [00:47:17] (24 seconds)
The third part of Jabez's prayer was, let your hand be with me. In other words, fill me with your presence. Fill me with your presence. If we're going to pray for God's blessing and for God to expand our influence, we better pray for his presence to fill us. Because if we are not filled with God's presence, then we'll just try to do it all in our own strength. [00:51:42] (25 seconds)
Jesus said it like this. Okay, you got this? I am divine. I am divine. Divine, you are the branches. You are not the vine. I'm the vine. You are the branches. Got the picture? Okay. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can't do very much. [00:52:43] (28 seconds)
If we focus on our pain, perhaps even saying things like, well, why me? Why me? What did I do? What did I do so I have to go through this pain? Or why did they do that to me? If we try to run away from pain or pretend that it doesn't exist, if we try to ground our sorrows or just try to stay so busy that we don't have to deal with it, or if we just conclude that we are a pain, I am worthless. [00:55:54] (35 seconds)
Our author says, remember, prayer isn't about God moving toward you. Prayer is about you moving toward God. That's why we pray. That's why a prayer-first posture. So what are you going to do with this? I mean, it's a pretty simple prayer. You know, I try to put it in acrostic if you want to. Blessing, influence, presence, protection, so it's kind of a bip. [00:58:18] (31 seconds)
