Transforming the Heart: Intentional Spiritual Formation
Summary
In our journey through Dallas Willard's "Renovation of the Heart," we begin by exploring the profound concept of spiritual formation. The heart, as described in Proverbs, is the wellspring of life, and it is from this inner place that our actions and responses flow. This spiritual dimension, though often overlooked, is central to our existence. Our spirits have been formed by our past experiences and choices, shaping the character we embody today. This formation is not merely a passive occurrence but an active process that can be influenced by our conscious decisions.
The heart, spirit, and will are deeply interconnected, forming the core of our being from which we perceive the world and make choices. Our responses to life's situations reveal the state of our spirit, often uncovering hidden aspects of our character. For instance, moments of frustration or dishonesty can expose deeper issues within us that we might not be consciously aware of. Recognizing these responses allows us to understand our spiritual condition better and invites us to seek transformation.
Spiritual formation is not an optional path but an inevitable process that shapes everyone, from the most virtuous to the most vile. It is a continuous shaping of our inner being, influenced by our interactions, media consumption, and daily choices. This formation can happen accidentally or intentionally, for better or worse. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be intentional about our spiritual formation, allowing Him to guide and shape our spirits.
Discipleship and spiritual formation are not separate paths but intertwined journeys. A disciple is one who entrusts their spiritual formation to Jesus, seeking to be molded by His teachings and example. By being mindful of our responses and inviting Jesus to lead our spiritual growth, we can guard our hearts and align our lives with His will.

Quotes
Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. I'm so glad you're joining with me. We're reading, walking through, learning, studying from this book "Renovation of the Heart" by Dallas Willard. For I don't know 30 years or so, I have understood my ministry kind of privately basically to be Dallas for dummies. [00:00:42]
We live from our heart. The part of us that drives and organizes our life is not the physical. This remains true even if we deny it. You have a spirit within you, and it has been formed. It has taken on a specific character. I have a spirit, and it has been formed. This is true of everyone. [00:02:23]
Our life and how we find the world now and in the future is almost totally a simple result of what we have become in the depths of our being, in our spirit, will, or heart. We'll talk more about those words because they're very important. Often they tend to be vague in most of our minds. [00:03:07]
The situations in which we find ourselves are never as important as our responses to them, which come from our spiritual side. Say that one more time: the situations in which we find ourselves are never as important as our responses to them, which come from our spiritual side, our spirit. [00:04:48]
Notice in any given moment what is the situation outside of you and the response that is coming from within you. Often my response will tell me there are things going on in my depth that I did not know were there. I bought a pair of shoes last summer to go on a really fun trip with my friends. [00:05:18]
It's very humbling to see that. Now what happens occasionally is we'll get caught doing something wrong, and then you look at this very often in news stories when this happens to somebody's well-known, their response will be, "That's not who I am," but of course, that's exactly who I am. [00:07:14]
Spiritual formation is the process by which the human spirit or will is given a definite form or character. It is a process that happens to everyone. The most despicable as well as the most admirable persons have had a spiritual formation. Terrorists as well as saints are the outcome of spiritual formation. [00:09:06]
We each become a certain kind of person in the depths of our being, gaining a certain type of character. We might think about it like this: there's an outer part to my person. I have a body. It is being formed or shaped all the time on purpose or by accident, for better or for worse. [00:09:32]
People sometimes think that spiritual formation is just this optional track available at churches. No, no, no, no, no. You are being formed spiritually all the time. What you see on a computer, conversation you have with other people, Zoom meeting, what you read, what you watch on TV, we are constantly being formed or shaped. [00:10:07]
A disciple is simply somebody who has put Jesus in charge of their spiritual formation. And if I want Jesus to spiritually form me, the only way to do that is to become His disciple. So, you have a spirit. Today be on the lookout when each situation comes up. [00:10:40]
And then I'll begin to learn a little bit about my spirit. And if you want, you can put Jesus in charge of forming it. More to come in the meantime, guard your heart. [00:11:15]
The conscious part of us is important. The vast majority of our lives is beneath consciousness. Do you mean some will say that the individual and collective disasters that fill the human scene are not imposed upon us from without, that they do not just happen to us? Yes, that is what I mean, Dallas writes. [00:03:48]
