First Corinthians 15:10 sets the whole matter plain: “By the grace of God I am what I am.” Grace is not something earned, deserved, or worked up by good behavior. Grace is God’s unmerited favor, God looking beyond faults, God doing for sinners what sinners could never do for themselves. Grace is another way of saying God loves His people, and that love is not small, thin, or hard to find.
Grace brings true transformation because sin left people helpless and hopeless. One sin separates from God, and no amount of effort, church work, or self-improvement can lead anybody to redemption. Paul says in Ephesians that God quickened those who were dead in trespasses and sins, and that means God did the bringing back to life. “But God, who is rich in mercy,” stepped in when there was no strength, no righteousness, and no way out.
Grace is for everyone, not one hue, one zip code, one denomination, or one people group. Romans says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and all who believe are justified freely by grace through Jesus Christ. Grace makes people “come off your horse” and “take your halo off your head,” because sufficiency is not in self but in God. Grace leaves no room for boasting except boasting in Him.
Grace meets weakness without turning away. Paul’s thorn in the flesh became the place where God said, “My grace is sufficient for thee.” Weakness becomes the place of leaning, and leaning becomes the place where strength comes from the Lord. God knows the low point, the trouble, the failure, and still He is not through working.
Grace does not excuse sin, but grace abounds where sin has increased. The prodigal came home after wasting all, and the father did not shame him on a signboard. The father wrapped him in welcome, and that is how God’s grace goes beyond the weakness and sin. Grace says Satan is lying when he says somebody has gone too far, done too much, or stayed too long.
Grace empowers godliness because nobody can live right alone. Titus says grace teaches the denying of ungodliness and worldly lust, and grace points toward that blessed hope in Jesus Christ. Christ took sins to Golgotha, was nailed to the cross, laid in a borrowed tomb, and “grace got up” early the third day morning. Grace that saves also teaches, keeps, leads, and calls God’s people to show grace to one another.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Grace makes true transformation possible Grace is the agent God uses to revive and save those who were helpless in sin. Human effort may look impressive to people, but it cannot redeem a soul before God. True change begins when pride stops trying to pay for salvation and receives what only God can give. [08:55]
- 2. Grace is for whosoever will Grace does not belong to one skin color, one denomination, or one neighborhood. Romans levels every person under sin, then lifts every believer by the same free justification in Christ. Grace humbles the proud because nobody stands before God by background, reputation, or religious polish. [15:09]
- 3. Weakness becomes a leaning place Paul’s thorn did not cancel God’s care, but became the place where God’s sufficiency showed up. Weakness teaches dependence, because strength is not finally in body, mind, or willpower. The soul that knows its low point can find that God has not turned His back there. [20:36]
- 4. Grace works godliness, not bragging Grace does not make self-congratulation holy. Grace teaches the believer to deny ungodliness and live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present world. Deliverance gives no room to brag on bootstraps, because God’s grace brought the person out and God’s grace leads the person on. [25:48]
- 5. Received grace becomes shared grace God’s daily dealing with sinners becomes the pattern for dealing with others. Grace looks the liar, the mistreater, and the difficult person in the eye and still renders service. The one who has been forgiven deeply has no right to become stingy with mercy. [30:18]
