Transforming Pain into Purpose Through Faith
Summary
Turning pain into purpose is a profound journey that reflects the transformative power of God in our lives. The parable of the pearl of great price in Matthew 13:45-46 serves as a metaphor for this transformation. The pearl, formed through the irritation and suffering of an oyster, symbolizes the church and the beauty that can emerge from our trials. Just as the merchant sold everything to acquire the pearl, Jesus willingly went to the cross to purchase the church, highlighting the immense value He places on us.
Pain is an inevitable part of life, but it is not without purpose. God does not create us for pain, but He allows it to shape our destiny. Like the oyster, which filters impurities and transforms irritation into a pearl, we are called to filter the struggles and hardships of life, allowing God to turn them into something beautiful. This process requires faith and trust in God's plan, even when we do not understand it.
The story of Joseph in the Old Testament exemplifies this journey. Betrayed by his brothers and enduring years of suffering, Joseph's pain ultimately led to his purpose: saving many lives during a famine. His story reminds us that our trials can prepare us for a greater calling, and that God is always working behind the scenes to bring about His good purposes.
Forgiveness is another crucial aspect of turning pain into purpose. Corrie ten Boom's encounter with a former Nazi guard illustrates the power of God's forgiveness working through us. When we surrender our pain to God, He provides the love and strength needed to forgive others, transforming our hearts and bringing healing.
Ultimately, Jesus assures us that while pain and suffering are inevitable, they are not the end of the story. His victory over the world gives us hope and the ability to overcome. By placing our lives in His hands, we can trust that He will turn our pain into purpose, bringing beauty and redemption out of our trials.

Quotes
"But this is the third week and we're talking about turning pain into purpose, but we titled it Pearl of Great Price in their text in Matthew. It's been the last few weeks just touching on this, giving some background about pearls. and in our life. Now, let me just preface this, that this is not a message that, how do I say this, that, hey, people, we want you to know that there's pain and suffering in life, so just deal with it. That's not the intent of this message. How many know we all face pain, all right? But it's learning how to deal with that and overcome, and see a little bit of a backdrop of how God, He uses the situation for our good, if we let Him, and we don't, you know, fall off the tracks, get bitter, and which, I'll touch on that." [00:02:05] (53 seconds)
"And so we can learn a lot from the oyster, because we said this, that it's actually really one in 10,000 oysters actually produce a pearl, and so in other words, that pearl was the process of pain, and we feel that the rest of the 9,999 other oysters, they left nothing behind. They died, and their shell was decayed and gone, but it's those that walk through the valley of the shadow of death and fear no evil, that God can bring something beautiful out of your life. So I'm saying this as encouragement, but also it challenges us all to be aware of that our walk of faith, as we know, it's very challenging at times." [00:06:14] (45 seconds)
"But there's something about pain that God allows, but He never wastes. I mean, we know that it's inevitable. And here's the thing. People recognize this. And many people, they just build their lives around shielding themselves from all pain. I mean, I'm going to wake up every day, and I don't want to see snow. Can't say that here in Minnesota. So, I'm going to move to the warmest climate. I'm going to have a house with a large fence, and it's going to be electrocuted. And nobody, you know, you know what I'm saying? We're going to avoid all pain. We're going to build, and people do this. And they, you know, they have their bunkers for when the attack happens, and food in it, and hiding under the ground. I mean, come on, somebody. This is, we are to live our lives in faith. Amen? But I don't like pain. But pain is often the raw material God uses to shape our destiny." [00:07:11] (58 seconds)
"In the same way, what does that mean? That our pain can, it can, it can, not always, but it can become a testimony of God's power and redemption when we place our life in His hands. Can you say amen? And once again, God did not create you for pain, but He does allow it to shape your purpose. And like an oyster that actually filters the oceans and purities, there are times, many times, and I think it's cyclical. I don't think we should live our lives constantly from one tragedy to the next tragedy to the next devastation to the next. I mean, how long can you survive?" [00:09:56] (38 seconds)
"You know, pearls were one of the most prized treasures in biblical times. And as we see that Jesus used it, them as a metaphor to describe the incomparable worth of the kingdom of God, that's really what we're talking about. But when you think about it, practically speaking, what makes a pearl so valuable? Where does this worth come from? Well, it's the result of an oyster enduring pain and irritation over many years, right?" [00:09:28] (28 seconds)
"And so, many times that we go through life, we're, at times, we got to filter these struggles, these offenses. We got to filter this. Hardships, disappointments, betrayals, these things that we're filtering, we're filtering. And so, when pain, it enters our life, we have a choice. We have a choice. We can allow it to destroy us, which I don't mean to be insensitive in this. Depending, I've seen and heard and been a part of tremendous pain in situations. I just, I'm a, I am the chaplain for the Marine Corps detachment here in town. And I'm actually on the honors firing detail for funeral honors." [00:10:34] (41 seconds)
"That's really our call, to bring life and truth to our environment. But, you know, just like the oyster, sometimes in our life of purifying, there's a grain of sand, there's an irritant that comes in. Are you awake this morning? And it finds its way in. And really, it's not part of the oyster's function, but it happens. It happens. It just happens. It happens. The same way for our life, this unexpected loss, betrayal, whatever it may be, hardship, pain. Jesus said in John 16, 33, he said, I have told you these things so that in me you may have perfect peace. Somebody shout peace. But it's perfect peace in Jesus. In the world, you'll have tribulation, distress, and suffering. But here's what I want us to focus on. Be courageous. Be confident. Be undaunted. Be filled with joy. Wait a minute. You just said we're going to have pain and suffering." [00:15:20] (61 seconds)
"And then when the moment came, he rose to power in Egypt, not as a bitter man seeking revenge, but as a man refined by suffering, ready to save many lives. Right? What was it? His pain actually became his purpose. And his rejection led to his greatest calling in his life. You know, rejection is painful. It marks you. It cuts you. I'm going to share something personally. My wife and I back in 1992, we were out here in Minnesota for about a year. I remember it was May 5, 1990, because it was snowing. I'll never forget that. Moving from Texas." [00:24:50] (45 seconds)
"Many of you have read The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boone. She was a Dutch watchmaker and later became a Christian writer. And then she was a public speaker. Worship team, you can come forward. And she helped the Jews escape from the Holocaust by hiding them. This is actually a picture of the room. That they would crawl into there. They broke that part off there behind the wall. That the Germans. Germans could not see when they looked at the house that that room seemed like it was the outside, but it was not. It was a little area that she would hide the Jews to save them, to help them." [00:34:42] (41 seconds)
"And she wrote about an experience she had after her book came out. And she actually met a former Nazi guard who actually had her sister, Betsy, killed. I want you to think about this. So she writes, it was at a church service in Munich that I saw him, a former SS man who had stood guard at the shower room door in the processing center at Ravensbrück. He was the first of our actual jailers that I had seen since that time. And suddenly it was all there. It all came back. The room full of mocking men, the heaps of clothing, Betsy's pain-blanched face." [00:35:27] (54 seconds)
"Lord Jesus, she writes, I prayed, forgive me. Help me to forgive him. I tried to smile. I struggled to raise my hand. I could not. God. What? I felt nothing, not the lightest spark of warmth and charity. So again, I breathed a silent prayer. Jesus, I prayed, I cannot forgive him. I cannot. Jesus, give me your forgiveness. Give me your forgiveness. As I took his hand, the most incredible thing happened, she writes. From my shoulder along my arm and through my hand, a current seemed to pass from me to him. Well, into my heart sprang a love for this stranger that almost overwhelmed me. So I discovered that it is not on our forgiveness any more than on our goodness that the world's healing hinges. But on Jesus's." [00:36:30] (65 seconds)
"Only God can turn pain into purpose. Her life's a testimony of that, but not without painful, awful, awful things. But God turned it around. She was willing to place her life and her future in his hands. What the enemy meant for evil, God turned around for good. She's not suffering now. She has no sorrow. She has no sadness. There's no tears. There's just only a vague memory of what she went through as she is with the Lord Jesus Christ." [00:38:25] (35 seconds)
