Transforming Ministry Through the Power of Social Media

Summary

In today's discussion, we explored the transformative power of social media in ministry. The core mission of any ministry is to spread the gospel and share the love of Jesus, and social media offers an unprecedented opportunity to do just that on a global scale. Reflecting on the early disciples who traveled far and wide to spread the message of Christ, we see that social media is a modern tool that allows us to reach beyond our local communities and connect with people worldwide. This is particularly crucial for small churches that may struggle with attendance and community engagement. By embracing social media, these churches can expand their reach and impact.

The experience of my own ministry, which started as a small church, illustrates the potential of social media. Initially, we were hesitant about media ministry, but the unexpected events of 2020 forced us to pivot. As a result, our online presence grew significantly, allowing us to reach a broader audience. This experience underscores the importance of being prepared for unforeseen circumstances and leveraging technology to continue our mission.

Social media is not just a tool for outreach; it also has the potential to enhance community connections and increase giving. By creating quality content and engaging with followers, churches can attract attention beyond their immediate congregation, potentially leading to increased financial support. Moreover, social media serves as a mission field without the need for travel, allowing churches to support and connect with missionaries globally.

To harness the power of social media effectively, it's essential to understand your current congregation and community. This involves assessing your church's demographics, popular ministries, leadership, and community involvement. Additionally, it's crucial to have a clear mission statement and be honest about any hindrances to growth. By doing so, you can create a strategic plan for social media engagement that aligns with your church's mission and goals.

As we move forward, I encourage you to download the provided worksheet to assess your current situation and envision your ideal church. This exercise will help you identify areas for growth and development, both locally and globally. Quotes

"In this video, I want to talk to you all about the importance of why social media matters for ministry. So first of all, let's just dissect the whole fact that when we are in ministry, whether you're a pastor or you're a leader, the purpose of our ministry is to preach the gospel and to share the love of Jesus everywhere we go and whatever we do. So when you think about it, when it comes to that point, I always go back to the fact of if you think about the disciples, the disciples were going all over the world. They were, Jesus commissioned them to go to different places, to the different regions. If you think about when Jesus was born, the shepherds were running around their communities, telling everybody about Jesus." [00:00:00] ( | | )

"But what ended up happening as a result of it is while we were closed for a small amount of time, we weren't close for several months, but we were close for a little bit, our online ministry grew tremendously. And that was because we had video cameras, we were having quality video performance out there, and we were on social media. So when people were trying to find churches that were open or that had a good online ministry, the word spread like wildfire about us on social media. And so we never know what the world is going to entail. I mean, we can all admit that we're kind of towards the end times, right? So we don't know what technology can happen. And so I want you to keep that in the back of your mind of what happens if something goes sideways and we have people from all over the world that might need the message that you have. You have been created for such a time as this. Your church and your ministry has been created for such a time as this, which means you have the potential to reach people beyond your community into the online space. But what does that mean for you right now before the online community can even grow?" [00:03:23] (70 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

"We need to connect with your community. We need to get you on social media. And what that means and where you're going to learn in these lessons the next few weeks ahead is how we can grow your social media platform. So when you're posting stuff, it actually shows up in front of the right people and people actually want to share it. Like your congregation follows you on social media. They love what you're posting and they're sharing it to their personal pages and they're telling their friends about it. So let me use another real life example. When I was growing up, I grew up in a country church. So how many of you know, if you're in a country church, it's not like you're going to have groups of people showing up. You're just not going to have it because we were 20 miles away from the nearest town. And so it was really hard in 20 miles in the country is different than 20 miles in the city. Let me tell you that we couldn't grow. A lot of times, like my parents, my siblings and I, we were three kids and we were the youth group. Like that's how it was. We could not grow because it was hard for people to travel and it was in Minnesota. So guess what happens in the winter? We have snow, which means things get canceled all the time. Nobody wants to drive." [00:04:33] (70 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

"from the 1970s, it's really important for you to look at that and assess, is this actually how we're able to do this? And it might be one of those generic mission statements. Okay, well, then that's what the purpose of this worksheet and this exercise is going to be, is we're going to create relevant things that will connect what you do on social media to the mission statement that you have. Okay. Oh, and then the other one I want you to make sure of is what are your current current hindrances to your church growth? This one stings a bit too. And again, we talked about the fact that you might be in a small church or a country church where you're that one of the things that you're struggling with is just location. You're in a hard location to reach people. And that's what social media is all about. We're going to get, we're going to take care of that for you. I promise."
