Transforming Minds: Spiritual Growth and Habit Change

Summary

In today's message, we explored the profound connection between our spiritual transformation and the workings of our brain. Understanding the roles of the prefrontal cortex and the limbic system, we see how our rational decisions and subconscious habits influence our actions. God desires to transform us from the inside out, renewing our minds and changing our default behaviors to align with His will. This transformation involves both spiritual and psychological elements, as God seeks to set us free from sin by changing our minds and habits.

We delved into the concept of habits, as explained by James Clear in "Atomic Habits," which consist of cues, cravings, behaviors, and rewards. Recognizing these patterns in our lives, we can apply God's wisdom from Proverbs to address and overcome sin. By controlling our environment and speaking truth to our cravings, we can avoid temptation and make sin difficult to access. This involves creating "commitment devices," which are proactive decisions made in the present to prevent future sinful actions.

Proverbs 7 served as a guide, illustrating the dangers of succumbing to temptation and the importance of guarding our hearts. The passage warns against the seductive allure of sin and the destruction it brings. By understanding the cues and cravings that lead us astray, we can take practical steps to avoid sin and walk in freedom. This requires honesty, accountability, and a commitment to change.

As a community, we are encouraged to be honest about our struggles and support one another in our journey toward freedom. By sharing our experiences and applying biblical principles, we can break free from the bondage of sin and live in the freedom that Christ offers. This is not about legalism or earning God's love, but about experiencing the abundant life He desires for us.

Day 1: The Brain's Role in Spiritual Transformation
Understanding the connection between our brain's functions and our spiritual journey can illuminate why we struggle with sin and how transformation occurs. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for rational decision-making, and the limbic system, which governs emotions and habits, both play crucial roles in our actions. Recognizing this, we can see how God desires to renew our minds, changing our default behaviors to align with His will. This transformation is not just spiritual but also psychological, as God seeks to set us free from sin by altering our minds and habits. [08:42]

Romans 12:2 (ESV): "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

Reflection: Identify a habit or behavior that you struggle with. How can you invite God to transform your mind in this area today?

By understanding the habit loop, we can take proactive steps to align our actions with God's will. [11:35]

Proverbs 4:23-27 (ESV): "Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure."

Reflection: What is one cue or craving that often leads you into temptation? How can you change your environment or response to this cue today?

By guarding our hearts and being vigilant, we can resist temptation and experience the freedom that Christ offers. [22:51]

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (ESV): "Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

These devices help us to stay committed to our spiritual growth and align our actions with God's will. By being intentional about our choices, we can create an environment that supports our journey toward holiness. [27:01]

Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV): "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."

Quotes

If we're going to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, I think God wants to change both of these. Some of us are sitting here thinking, man, that habit that I've got that I just can't seem to break right now, you're probably not even tempted with it right now. You're thinking, yeah, that seems like a really dumb thing to do. I shouldn't do that thing, right? But then you get back into your normal environment and you get back into your habits. [00:08:06]

He wants to change our default from being, hey, things that are not of God or like God to our default to be Godly right through the Holy Spirit in us. Okay, so why I'm saying this, if you're like me and you wrestle with sin struggles, you might think, man, what is wrong with me? Why do I keep going back to that same sin over and over again? Am I even a Christian? Do I even have faith in Jesus? [00:08:57]

There's a spiritual side of this, but there's literally a mental in your mind thing working that's also like a psychological side of things as well. And so when God transforms us, he wants to change us from the inside out. He wants to change our minds. The word repentance means change your mind. That's what the word repentance means, metanoia, change your mind. Metanoia, change your mind. [00:08:43]

If you have sin habits that you need to be set free from, this is going to be helpful for you. Okay, here's how our brains work just by our habits are formed and habits are work. He said there's four things that happen. There's a cue, there's a craving, there's a behavior, and there's a reward. There's a cue that's normally your environment that you're in, the day of the week, time of day, location, people you're with, things that you see. [00:10:36]

Proverbs Chapter 5 says don't put yourself in tempting situation, stay far away from it, right? Proverbs 5, Proverbs six, we talked about various different sin areas in our lives and we talked about how specifically what do you do when you have a craving because if you're like me, you can't control every environment so there's never a Temptation in your life. You can have wisdom to avoid tempting situations. [00:12:31]

With much seductive speech she persuades him and her with her smooth talk and he and com I need to read here and she compels him there we go with much persuasive speech she compels him he does the Behavior he goes down the behavior right all at once he follows her as an ox goes to the slaughter or as a stag is caught fast till an arrow pierces its liver as a bird rushes into a snare he does not know that it will cost him his life. [00:22:12]

Every sin is based in a lie I will tell you that every sin is based in a lie but every sin also damages relationship whether it's with us with God with people in our lives we think no one will know about it it won't affect anybody but me but it does affect me it does affect me and God you know you live this lifestyle thinking man is God trying to punish me now because I'm living this lifestyle apart you're going to have all these thoughts it damages relationship. [00:23:03]

Let not your heart turn aside to her ways that's where it's guarding your heart that's where when your Cravings come that's when you got to speak truth to it that's when I said last week you disagree with those thoughts you rebuke those thoughts in the name of Jesus you speak truth to it we have no Authority in and of ourselves to cast out any sort of Temptation by ourselves it's all in the name of Jesus when you've put on Jesus you've put on Christ. [00:24:56]

A commitment device is a choice you make in the present to determine your actions in the future you don't want to make sin difficult in your life why don't you make some decisions right now I'll go through pornography that's something I wrestled with um you know what I do with that I try to make my environment you know so I'm not you know tempted with stuff for sure I try to take thoughts captive all the time for sure for sure. [00:27:09]

It's not about dos and don'ts it's not about hey man um Christians are just like legalistic just trying to keep me from any having any sort of fun in my life it's actually about Freedom guys we want you to have the most freedom I think God wants you to have the most freedom and it's found in him and so uh commitment device is something you can you and me can create right now that can say hey it's going to help me from straying into her path. [00:30:50]
