Transforming Minds: Finding Peace Through Christ
Summary
### Summary
Good morning, New Life Church! Today, we delved into the transformative power of renewing our minds through Christ, as highlighted in Romans 12:2. We explored the importance of not conforming to the patterns of this world but allowing God to transform us by renewing our minds. This renewal enables us to discern God's will, which is good, pleasing, and perfect.
We discussed how Jesus speaks to and through His people, emphasizing the need to truly listen to His teachings. Listening, as opposed to merely hearing, leads to a deeper understanding and abundant knowledge. Jesus often reiterated the importance of having ears to hear, underscoring the difference between hearing and listening.
Our minds are easily distracted and can conform to unhealthy patterns, leading to anxiety, depression, and other destructive behaviors. I shared a personal story of battling mild depression and how reaching out to a friend helped redirect my thoughts to God's truth, renewing my hope and purpose. This highlights the importance of not isolating ourselves but connecting with God and others when we face mental struggles.
We also touched on the biological and lifestyle factors contributing to depression and anxiety, noting that while some causes are biological, many are rooted in our thought patterns and behaviors. Jesus offers us peace of mind and heart, a gift the world cannot provide. This peace guards our hearts and minds, helping us combat anxiety and depression.
To protect our minds, we need a spiritual firewall, which is God's Word. By immersing ourselves in Scripture, we can confront unhealthy thoughts with God's truth. We also need to develop the habit of praying about our thoughts. When worry or temptation arises, let it be a cue to pray, inviting God's peace to guard our hearts and minds.
In conclusion, Jesus is speaking to us, offering to renew our minds and give us peace. Whether you need to surrender your life to Christ or commit to meditating on Scripture, take action today. Let God's Word be your firewall, and let prayer be your response to every thought.

The process of renewing the mind involves a continuous effort to align one's thoughts with God's truth, allowing His transformative power to work within us. This renewal is not a one-time event but a daily commitment to seeking God's guidance and wisdom in all aspects of life. [20:28]
Bible passage: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." - Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Day 2: The Importance of Truly Listening to Jesus
Description: Jesus often emphasized the difference between hearing and truly listening to His teachings. Listening involves a deeper engagement that leads to understanding and abundant knowledge, while merely hearing can result in losing even the little understanding one has. This distinction is crucial for spiritual growth and alignment with God's will. By truly listening to Jesus, believers can gain a deeper insight into His teachings and apply them more effectively in their lives. [24:44]
Bible passage: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." - Matthew 11:15 (ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you find yourself merely hearing rather than truly listening to Jesus' teachings? How can you cultivate a habit of deeper listening and understanding?
Day 3: Connecting with God and Others to Combat Mental Struggles
Description: Our minds are often battlegrounds for anxiety, depression, and other destructive thoughts. During tough times, it is vital to connect with God and others to redirect our thoughts to God's truth, renewing our hope and purpose. Isolation can worsen our struggles, so seeking support from friends, family, and the faith community is essential. By sharing our burdens and receiving encouragement, we can find strength and hope in God's promises. [28:57]
Bible passage: "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." - Galatians 6:2 (ESV)
Reflection: Who in your life can you reach out to for support when facing mental struggles? How can you also be a source of encouragement and support for others in your community?
Day 4: God's Word as a Spiritual Firewall
Description: God's Word acts as a spiritual firewall, protecting our minds from unhealthy thoughts. By immersing ourselves in Scripture, we can confront and take captive every thought that contradicts God's truth. This habit transforms one's thought life, replacing anxiety with God's peace and ensuring that the mind remains focused on His truth. By developing a consistent prayer life, believers can experience the peace that surpasses all understanding and find strength to overcome challenges. [42:35]

Quotes
1. "I don't know about you, but I want a story. I want my life story when it comes to an end for it to be said about me that my life was marked with peace of mind and peace of heart, that I was a man that pursued the mind of Christ. How many want that same story? And so the question is, who's writing your story? God wants to write your story. Are you letting Him write your story? And then are you telling the story that He wants you to tell?" [21:27] (30 seconds)
2. "The big idea of this series is that Jesus has something to say. And if we listen, we will have the life that he planned for us to have. And there are two ways. There are more than two, but two ways I want to highlight that Jesus speaks. And that is this. To his people, he speaks to his people and through his people. He speaks to those who have surrendered their life to him, their followers of him. He speaks to them. And then he wants to speak through them." [23:54] (25 seconds)
3. "So are we listening? And so here's the problem today. We read it in Romans 12, verse 2. Our minds are easily, easily distracted, and they easily conform to unhealthy patterns. And so if you're a follower of Christ, here's the warning. The Apostle Paul, he's a spiritual leader, a spiritual father to a number of different churches in the New Testament. And one church in Corinth, he writes this to believers in 2 Corinthians 11, verse 3. He says, but I'm afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, he's speaking to the original sin in the garden where Satan in the form of a serpent deceived Eve. In that same way, I'm afraid that your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ." [25:48] (51 seconds)
4. "When you're depressed, when you're down, when those thoughts come in and there's darkness, don't isolate. That will leave you stuck. Connect with God. Connect with another person. You see, I felt like my faith tank was empty, but I knew my friend's faith would redirect me, would help me reconnect with God's truth. And what did he do? He listened and then that's exactly what he did. He redirected my mind, my thoughts to God's truth. And what happened? God began to resurrect hope in my life. My mind began to be renewed by God's truth and hope began to spring up and God's purpose in my life came back and a passion came back and my mood lifted and my heart lifted and my spirit was energized." [29:20] (46 seconds)
5. "So did you catch that in our verse in John 14, 27, that the renewal of your mind that Jesus is offering, the world cannot give it to us? We can't find it in our job. We can't find it in a relationship. We can't find it in what this world has to offer. Only Jesus offers that type of gift. And so for me at that time in my life, my pattern of thinking was that I don't have what it takes, that I don't have what it takes, that I don't have what it takes to honor God with my life and to be a quote success." [33:15] (35 seconds)
6. "If you're caught in depression, if you're caught in thought patterns that are destructive and unhealthy, you will be unable to even know what God's will is for your life. And let me highlight this in Romans 12 too, what we just read. This is in the passive voice. The renewing of your mind, it's in the passive voice. What does that mean? It's not something that we do necessarily but something that is done to us. It's something that Jesus wants to do to us. Yet we must position ourselves so that Jesus can renew our minds." [34:54] (36 seconds)
7. "If you think about it pray about it. Philippians 4, 6 and 7 don't worry about anything. How many think that's easier said than done? Especially if you have kids right? Don't worry about anything. Instead this is why we need God's word. Instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need. Thank Him for what He has already done. Then everybody say then. Because if you do that then you will experience God's peace. Which exceeds anything we can understand. And this is so cool. His peace will guard your hearts and what else? Your minds. As you live in Christ Jesus." [42:03] (49 seconds)
8. "Give all your worries and cares to God for He cares for you. And when we take our worried thoughts to the Lord what are we doing? We're saying God I give this to you. Because I can't carry it. We're saying God I trust you in this. I trust you in this situation because I can't fix this. That's called dependence. And dependence is interchangeable with faith and trust. And God honors faith." [44:57] (29 seconds)
9. "If you're not living surrendered to Him today if you're not in relationship with Christ today whether or not you've never surrendered your life to Christ or you're somebody who once served Him but you've walked away you've been living your own life if you're not living surrendered He offers you the best deal of the century of the millennia of all time. He offers you this free gift called peace with God. Peace of heart and peace of mind that gift He wants to give. If you will just surrender the Bible says He will make you a new creation. The old is gone the new has come when you surrender your life to Christ." [46:01] (37 seconds)
10. "If you think about it pray about it. Let that be a cue. Take all your thoughts captive. Make them obedient to the truth to Christ. If you think about it pray about it and what's going to happen you're going to discover the peace of God will become a guard for your heart and for your mind. So at all of our locations today you have an action step you have a next step a response to make. For some of you it's surrender your life to Christ. This is the best deal that you'll ever get." [46:56] (27 seconds)
