Transforming Lives Through the Renewal of the Mind

Summary

In today's message, we explored the transformative power of renewing our minds through the Word of God. We began by acknowledging the irrational decisions we often make, despite our best intentions. This struggle is not unique to any one of us; it is a common human experience. The Apostle Paul, in Romans, urges us not to conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This transformation is crucial because our thoughts shape our lives. Where our thoughts go, our lives follow.

We delved into the concept of neural pathways, which are formed by repeated thoughts. These pathways can lead us to truth or trap us in lies. The battlefield of the mind is where victories and defeats occur. Paul teaches us that we have divine power to demolish strongholds—wrong patterns of thinking that hold us captive. We must take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.

The key to transformation lies in focusing our minds on what is true, honorable, and praiseworthy. Biblical meditation is about filling our minds with God's truth, not emptying them. This focus is a skill that requires practice and intentionality. We must identify the strongholds in our lives and replace them with spiritual truths that demolish these lies. By writing, thinking, and declaring these truths, we create new neural pathways aligned with God's Word.

I shared personal struggles with feelings of inadequacy and the pressure of balancing ministry and family. Yet, by focusing on the truth of God's Word, I have found strength and purpose. This practice of renewing the mind is not a one-time event but a continuous journey. It requires perseverance and faith, trusting that God's truth will prevail over the lies that seek to hold us captive.

Day 1: The Transformative Power of Renewing the Mind
The journey of transformation begins with the renewal of the mind, a process that aligns our thoughts with God's truth. This renewal is essential because our thoughts have a profound impact on the direction of our lives. The Apostle Paul, in Romans, emphasizes the importance of not conforming to the patterns of this world but instead being transformed by the renewing of our minds. This transformation is not a passive experience but an active engagement with God's Word, allowing it to shape and guide our thoughts. By focusing on what is true, honorable, and praiseworthy, we can break free from worldly patterns and align our lives with God's purpose. [36:25]

Ephesians 4:22-24 (ESV): "To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."

Reflection: What specific thought patterns in your life need to be renewed by God's truth today? How can you intentionally focus on what is true and honorable in your daily routine?

Day 2: Identifying and Demolishing Strongholds
Our minds are powerful, capable of forming neural pathways through repeated thoughts. These pathways can lead us to truth or trap us in lies, creating strongholds that hold us captive. The battlefield of the mind is where victories and defeats occur, and it is crucial to identify these strongholds. Paul teaches that we have divine power to demolish these wrong patterns of thinking. By taking every thought captive and making it obedient to Christ, we can break free from the lies that entrap us. This process requires intentionality and the courage to confront the lies with spiritual truths. [45:24]

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (ESV): "For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."

Reflection: What lies or strongholds have you identified in your life? How can you use God's truth to confront and demolish these strongholds today?

Day 3: The Practice of Biblical Meditation
Biblical meditation is distinct from other forms of meditation as it involves filling our minds with God's truth rather than emptying them. This practice is a skill that requires dedication and intentionality, leading to a life aligned with God's will. By meditating on Scripture, we allow God's Word to permeate our thoughts, transforming our minds and hearts. This focus on God's truth helps us to develop new neural pathways that align with His Word, guiding us in our daily lives. The practice of biblical meditation is a powerful tool for spiritual growth and transformation. [53:15]

Joshua 1:8 (ESV): "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."

Reflection: How can you incorporate biblical meditation into your daily routine? What specific Scripture will you meditate on today to fill your mind with God's truth?

Day 4: Overcoming Personal Struggles with God's Truth
Personal struggles, such as feelings of inadequacy, can be overwhelming, but focusing on God's truth provides strength and purpose. By declaring spiritual truths over our lives, we can overcome the lies that seek to hold us captive. This practice involves writing, thinking, and declaring these truths, creating new neural pathways aligned with God's Word. It is a continuous journey that requires perseverance and faith, trusting that God's truth will prevail. By focusing on His promises, we find the strength to navigate our personal struggles and live a life of purpose. [01:05:12]

Isaiah 41:10 (ESV): "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Reflection: What personal struggles are you facing today? How can you declare God's truth over these struggles to find strength and purpose?

Day 5: The Continuous Journey of Mind Renewal
Renewing the mind is not a one-time event but a continuous journey that requires perseverance and faith. This journey involves writing, thinking, and declaring God's truth, creating new pathways aligned with His Word. It is a process of transformation that shapes our thoughts and, ultimately, our lives. By committing to this journey, we trust that God's truth will prevail over the lies that seek to hold us captive. This continuous renewal of the mind is essential for spiritual growth and alignment with God's purpose for our lives. [01:11:18]

Colossians 3:10 (ESV): "And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator."

Reflection: How can you commit to the continuous journey of renewing your mind? What practical steps will you take today to align your thoughts with God's truth?

Quotes

"Paul the Apostle said this in Romans. He said, Do not conform to the patterns of this world. So, hey, everybody, don't think and act like the world does. Don't do that. But instead, be transformed, be changed. And how does this happen, everybody? Come on. Say it out loud with me. By renewing your mind." [00:36:12]

"So last week, we came alongside, and we talked about the fact that your brain, God's created it in such a way, and all neuroscience, by the way, is godly because God created science. He created your brain. So it's godly. But you need to understand that your brain, God's created it in such a way, and all neuroscience, by the way, it creates neural pathways that every time you think a thought, it makes it easier to think that thought again." [00:44:17]

"Your mind is a battlefield. In fact, Paul the Apostle, he said this. He said in 2 Corinthians, he says, For though we live in the world, Hey everybody, we don't do war as the world does. Because the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of this world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish. Come on everyone, say that word out loud with me. Strongholds. And a stronghold is a wrong pattern of thinking in your mind." [00:46:36]

"They matter because where your thoughts go, your life follows. What fills your mind is going to shape your life. I love what Joyce Myers said. She said, You cannot have a positive life when you have a negative mind. Because what you think about controls what you do." [00:47:50]

"Fix your thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable. Notice, he doesn't say fix your thoughts on the worst case scenarios. He doesn't say fix your thoughts on the bad news and the difficulties and the storms that are coming your way. No, he says, Fix your thoughts. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." [00:52:01]

"You can focus your mind on the principles of God's Word, and it's actually a very scriptural, a very, a very healthy thing for you to do. In fact, that word meditate means this, to engage in mental exercise, to focus one's thoughts. It's all about you focusing." [00:53:20]

"One of the highest priorities that I personally have in my spiritual development is focusing my mind. Focusing. my attention on the truth of God's word because focus is a skill in fact according to the great theologian Jackie Chan in the Karate Kid movie the remake you know what I'm talking about which I'm so sorry let me just tell you all this he don't hold a candle to Mr. Miyagi come on somebody in Cobra Kai season 1, 2, and 3 come on baby sweep that leg you know anyways" [00:55:01]

"you've just been honing in on the wrong things again and again and again and what you look at the longest it becomes a mistake it becomes the strongest it becomes the dominating thought that is in your life here's what I've noticed in my own life in my life whenever my mind drifts it typically doesn't drift towards positive things it drifts towards fears and insecurities all kinds of worst case scenarios that the devil has been trying to convince me to believe that's where my mind drifts to and so what I'm going to do today is I'm actually going to give you some an exercise that if you'll begin to do this and put this into action this week it's going to actually begin to pay dividends in your life but let me just say this it's not going to be easy for you to do reality is most of you probably won't do this and when I say that it's not easy it's not easy because for some of us we've been believing the lie for 10 years 50 years 15 years and you're going to have to replace the mistruth with truth so if you're ready for this exercise come on everybody say I'm ready okay you asked for it here's the first thing you're going to need to ask the question number one what stronghold is holding me hostage and I know that we touched on that last week but I really need you to identify that what is the top number one stronghold the wrong mindset that keeps on holding you back from what it is that God has for you I don't know maybe for you you grew up in a household that you struggled with finances and so now you just think man I'm never going to get out of debt and we're going to always have financial problems in our lives and that's your stronghold" [00:56:34]

"Maybe for you, you have an addiction that's in your life and you've tried everything to get out of that addiction and it's still there and you've just come to the conclusion, I guess I'm just gonna always have this addiction. Or maybe you think, I'm just never gonna be healthy because nobody in my family is healthy so I guess it just runs in my genes. I'll never be healthy and that's your stronghold. Maybe you think, I'm never gonna be close to God because every time I get close to God, I seem to drift away from him and that's your stronghold. Maybe for you, you think, man, I'm always gonna have a dead end job that's gonna be meaningless that I hate. I'm gonna suck at this job for the rest of my life and it's gonna lead me down a bad path and that is your stronghold. Maybe for you, you think, I'm never gonna have a great marriage. It's never gonna become something beautiful or I'm never gonna be able to get married. Like what is the number one top wrong mindset that your spiritual enemy Satan has convinced you of? He has gotten into your neural pathways. He has reshaped. He has reprogrammed. He has renewed your mind to the negative and now it's a stronghold. You are a prisoner trapped by a lie." [00:58:37]

"Write out the truth that is going to demolish that stronghold that's in your life. Write it out and I'm not just talking about writing a sentence. I mean you write out a statement that is infused with all kinds of emotional energy towards the truth of God's word. You write it, then you're gonna think it, you're gonna declare it until it sticks. We're gonna write it. I'm gonna say it like this. We're gonna write it and think it and declare it until it sticks. We're gonna write it. We're gonna think it. We're gonna declare it until it sticks. We're gonna write it. We're gonna think it. We're gonna declare it until it sticks and we're gonna do that over and over and over again. What are we doing? We are renewing our minds. We are creating new neural pathways because it's very easy to repeat an old thought but you're not living that old pattern in your life anymore. You're gonna write it. You're gonna create new pathways." [01:00:36]

"Maybe for you, you feel like you have a lack of confidence in your life. You just feel like you're just, you are insecure. You just feel like you're just never enough. So you're gonna write, you're gonna write out, you're gonna declare that my confidence is in Christ alone and with his spirit in me, I can do everything he calls me to do. And you're gonna write it. You're gonna think it. You're gonna declare it until it sticks. Maybe you find yourself struggling with all kinds of lustful thoughts and that you feel so much shame because these images keep rolling around." [01:02:15]

"Because I've not chose to focus my mind on the lies. Instead, I've chosen to focus my mind on the truth. And this is a truth that actually I would declare over my life for years. For now, I declare this as I need it. And so here is the truth now that I declare over myself. And that's this. Jesus is the center of my life. My purpose is to serve and to glorify Him. I love my wife deeply, and I will sacrifice anything to serve her. My children will love and serve God wholeheartedly. I will equip and guide and empower them to do more for His kingdom." [01:10:49]
