Transforming Lives Through Biblical Meditation and Application

Summary

In embarking on this 40-day journey together, we are committing ourselves to becoming people of the Word. This series is designed not only to teach us how to study the Bible but also to practice what we learn through small group ministry projects. The ultimate goal is to love, learn, and live the Word. The Bible's purpose, as stated in 2 Timothy 3, is not merely for doctrine, reproof, correction, or instruction in righteousness. These are means to an end, which is to equip us for every good work and transform our lives. The Bible changes our convictions, character, and conduct, equipping us to live out God's will.

We will focus on the devotional method of Bible study, one of twelve methods, which is accessible to everyone, requiring no special tools. This method emphasizes meditation, a concept often misunderstood. Biblical meditation involves deeply contemplating scripture, allowing it to transform us. Joshua 1:8 promises prosperity and success to those who meditate on God's Word day and night. Meditation is akin to rumination, like a cow chewing cud, extracting every ounce of nutrition. This process involves reading a passage repeatedly, emphasizing different words to uncover new insights.

Five general principles guide our Bible study: asking the right questions, writing down observations, applying what we learn, studying systematically, and reading scripture repeatedly. These principles ensure that our study is not just an intellectual exercise but a transformative experience. We must apply what we learn, as true belief is demonstrated through action. The Bible is a lamp and a mirror, revealing our true selves and guiding us to live in the light of God's truth.

The first meditation technique we will practice is the "pronounce it" method, where we read a verse aloud, emphasizing different words to gain new perspectives. This simple yet powerful method helps us internalize scripture and apply it to our lives. As we meditate on Colossians 3:16, we learn to let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly, transforming us from the inside out. Our time in the Word is not just for our benefit but also for others, as God uses us to share His truth.

As we engage in this journey, we are encouraged to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God, as stated in Micah 6:8. This series aims to change us and those around us, making us living Bibles for the glory of God.

Day 1: Transformation Through the Word
The Bible's ultimate purpose is to transform our lives, equipping us for every good work. It changes our convictions, character, and conduct, aligning us with God's will. This transformation is the end goal of our study, not just acquiring knowledge. The Bible is not merely a book of doctrines or moral guidelines; it is a living document meant to shape who we are. As we engage with Scripture, we are invited to let it mold our thoughts, attitudes, and actions, so that we become more like Christ. This transformation is not passive but requires our active participation and willingness to be changed. [04:27]

2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV): "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."

Reflection: What specific area of your life do you feel God is calling you to transform through His Word today?

Day 2: The Power of Biblical Meditation
Meditation on scripture is essential for spiritual growth. Unlike Eastern meditation, biblical meditation involves deeply contemplating God's Word, allowing it to transform us. This process, akin to rumination, helps us extract every ounce of spiritual nutrition. By meditating on Scripture, we allow it to penetrate our hearts and minds, leading to profound spiritual insights and personal growth. This practice is not about emptying the mind but filling it with God's truth, enabling us to live out His will more fully. [14:35]

Psalm 1:2-3 (ESV): "But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers."

Reflection: Choose a verse to meditate on today. How can you incorporate its truth into your daily routine?

Day 3: Belief in Action
True belief is demonstrated through action. We only truly believe the parts of the Bible we live out. Our study should lead to application, transforming our lives and making us more like Christ. It is not enough to merely understand or agree with biblical principles; we must put them into practice. This active faith is what sets believers apart and serves as a testimony to others. As we apply God's Word, we become living examples of His love and truth in the world. [09:07]

James 1:22-24 (ESV): "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like."

Reflection: Identify one biblical principle you have learned but not yet applied. What steps can you take today to live it out?

Day 4: Systematic and Repeated Study
Systematic and repeated study of the Bible is crucial. By studying scripture systematically and reading it repeatedly, we uncover deeper insights and allow God's Word to dwell in us richly, guiding our lives. This disciplined approach to Bible study helps us build a strong foundation of faith and understanding. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, we become more attuned to God's voice and direction, enabling us to navigate life's challenges with wisdom and grace. [10:28]

Colossians 3:16 (ESV): "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."

Reflection: What is one book of the Bible you can commit to studying systematically this month? How will you ensure consistency in your study?

Day 5: Sharing the Word with Others
Sharing what we learn with others reinforces our understanding and benefits those around us. Our time in the Word is not just for personal growth but also for the edification of others, as God uses us to share His truth. When we share insights from our Bible study, we not only strengthen our own faith but also encourage and uplift those around us. This communal aspect of faith is vital for building a supportive and nurturing spiritual community. [26:30]

Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV): "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

Reflection: Who is one person you can share a recent insight from your Bible study with today? How can this conversation encourage both of you in your faith journey?

Quotes

The ultimate purpose of the Bible is to change our lives. It changes our convictions, it changes our character, it changes our conduct. Now God says in Philippians he wants us to work out what he is working in us and that's why this verse says that that the Bible not only completes us it equips us for every good work. [00:04:37]

The secret of good Bible study is learning to ask the right questions and you can actually bomb the text with a limitless number of questions because there's no end to the wisdom and insight you'll find in the Bible. It's like the Dig Deeper you dig the more gold or you find and the more you learn to ask questions the better you will get at it. [00:06:17]

The goal of all Bible study ultimately is application that means how am I going to change it my life as a result of this what is it going to do to transform me how can I become that Living Bible that I mentioned earlier now we don't want to just settle for understanding alone we want to apply the biblical principles to our daily living. [00:08:03]

You don't really know the truth until you apply it to your life in fact I want you to write this down I only believe the parts of the Bible I actually do write that down I only believe the parts of the Bible I actually do if I say do you believe in witnessing yes do you do it no then you don't believe in witnessing. [00:09:15]

In studying the Bible you want to study it systematically in other words you want to stud study it verse by verse chapter by chapter book by book or topic by topic Theme by theme a a halfhazard cafeteria style what I call dip and Skip method where you just open the Bible and kind of put your finger down that approach find out what God wants to say. [00:10:06]

You must read the scripture over and over again this simple little tool will change how much you get out of the word of God it is amazing how you can study the same passage over and over and over again then leave it for three or four months and then when you come back to it there's still so much more to find the more you read a text the more you're going to get out of it. [00:10:28]

Biblical meditation is a whole other concept now the Bible uses the word meditate over and over and over in fact it uses it 29 times in New International Version to describe the devotional life and the different translations combine it uses it almost 80 times we are commanded to meditate and there are many promises in scripture that says if you'll learn how to meditate on the scripture which is what the devotional method is that God will bless you. [00:12:33]

Meditation as I said is essentially thought digestion it's taking a Bible passage or a verse or even a phrase and you put it in your mind and you roll it over and over and over and you think about it you know another word for this kind of biblical meditation not Eastern New Age meditation that's not what we're talking about we're talking talking about seriously thinking about the word of God. [00:14:35]

Scripture meditation is reading a passage over and over and over and over again and then thinking about it going away and then coming back and thinking about it some more and you concentrate on it in in different ways what is that cow doing it's digesting every ounce of nutrition and energy it can out of that grass and that's what you want to do with God's word. [00:15:59]

The Bible tells us that the word of God is both a lamp and a mirror for the soul so how do you look in a mirror and how do you look in in the light of this truth when you look at the mirror of God's word what does it say to you about you and when you look at your life with the light shined on you you know what I've noticed that the stronger the light the more I see my defects. [00:22:59]

The Bible tells us that the holy spirit will bring God's word to our minds at just the right time when we need it but you know what he can't bring a verse to mind if it's not already in your mind you have to dwell on it richly you have to let it into your heart you have to meditate on it that ruminate on it let it chew on it so that he can bring it back into your mind. [00:24:29]

Whenever you get something out of the word of God the quickest way to let it dwell in your mind is to tell it somebody else it may be your spouse it may be your friend it may be a co-worker hey you'll never let me just share with you what I got in my quiet time today if you'll begin to do that on a regular basis then it's going to it's going to help you grow and it's going to help other people grow.
