Transforming Hearts: Embracing Truth Over Unrighteousness
Devotional
Day 1: The Heart's Affection for Unrighteousness
The suppression of truth is not due to a lack of evidence but is driven by a love for unrighteousness. Our hearts are naturally inclined to reject truth because they are in love with sin and self-determination. This is a heart issue before it is an intellectual one. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 1, emphasizes that humanity's rejection of truth stems from a willful suppression driven by unrighteous desires. Our hearts, when in love with sin, blind us to the truth that is evident in both natural and special revelation. This love for darkness leads to a rejection of truth and a preference for unrighteousness. [10:32]
Romans 1:21-22 (ESV): "For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools."
Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you might be suppressing the truth due to a love for self-determination. How can you begin to surrender this area to God today?
Day 2: Faith as the Foundation of Christian Living
Faith, not gratitude, is the key to living the Christian life. While gratitude is essential, it is faith in God's promises that empowers us to live confidently in the face of uncertainty and trials. Special revelation, as seen in the Bible, calls us to respond with faith, trusting in God's covenant-keeping faithfulness. This faith sustains the Christian life, enabling us to live not only with gratitude for past grace but also with confidence in future grace. It is through faith that we embrace the promises of God, even amidst life's uncertainties. [03:13]
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV): "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
Reflection: What is one promise of God that you find difficult to trust in? How can you actively choose to place your faith in this promise today?
Day 3: The Mind's Service to the Heart
Our minds often serve the desires of our hearts, leading us to rationalize and justify our actions. A profound transformation of the heart is necessary to become truth-exalting people. Without this heart change, we remain enslaved to our passions, constantly twisting the truth to fit our desires. This transformation is a new birth that only God can bring about, freeing us from the enslavement of our passions and enabling us to embrace the truth. [12:10]
Jeremiah 17:9-10 (ESV): "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 'I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.'"
Reflection: Consider a recent decision where you might have rationalized your actions. How can you seek God's transformation in your heart to align your desires with His truth?
Day 4: Embracing the Light of Truth
Jesus teaches that people love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. This love for darkness leads to a rejection of truth and a preference for unrighteousness. A radical heart transformation is needed to embrace the light of truth. This transformation causes us to fall out of love with evil and embrace the light of truth, leading us to live in accordance with God's will. It is not merely about moral reform but about a profound change in our affections and desires. [15:25]
Ephesians 5:8-9 (ESV): "For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true)."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you are tempted to hide in darkness? How can you bring this area into the light of God's truth today?
Day 5: Teaching and Living the Truth
The events in Washington serve as a parable of the human condition, illustrating the consequences of forsaking truth. We are called to embrace the truth and teach our children to do the same, living in the light of God's grace and righteousness. This involves being truth people, who live in the light of God's grace and righteousness, which is a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ. By embracing the truth, we not only transform our own lives but also set an example for future generations. [18:24]
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (ESV): "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."
Reflection: How can you intentionally teach and model the truth of God's word to those around you, especially the younger generation, today?
Sermon Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound relationship between truth, unrighteousness, and the human heart. The core issue is not merely intellectual but deeply rooted in the affections and desires of our hearts. We often suppress or distort the truth because our hearts are in love with unrighteousness. This love for sin and self-determination blinds us to the truth that is evident in both natural and special revelation. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 1, highlights how humanity's rejection of truth is not due to a lack of evidence but a willful suppression driven by unrighteous desires.
Gratitude, while essential, is not the key to living the Christian life; rather, it is faith in the promises of God. Special revelation, as seen in the Bible, calls us to respond with faith, trusting in God's covenant-keeping faithfulness. This faith empowers us to live a life that is not only grateful for past grace but also confident in future grace. The Christian life is sustained by this faith, which embraces the promises of God, even in the face of uncertainty and trials.
The suppression of truth is a heart issue before it is a head issue. Our minds often serve the desires of our hearts, leading us to rationalize and justify our actions. This is why a profound transformation of the heart is necessary—a new birth that only God can bring about. Without this heart change, we remain enslaved to our passions, constantly twisting the truth to fit our desires.
Jesus, in John 3, echoes this sentiment, stating that people love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. This love for darkness leads to a rejection of truth and a preference for unrighteousness. The solution is not merely moral reform but a radical heart transformation that causes us to fall out of love with evil and embrace the light of truth.
Finally, we are reminded of the importance of embracing the truth and teaching our children to do the same. The events in Washington serve as a parable of the human condition, illustrating the consequences of forsaking truth. We are called to be truth people, living in the light of God's grace and righteousness, which is a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ.

Sermon Clips
Truth offers itself from the sky or in the gospel or in our consciences, we see it, we reject it. Why? We suppress it, why? We distort it, why? We take half of it and keep the half we like and reject the half we don't like. Why? Because our heart is in love with unrighteousness. [00:00:05]
If life is to be lived by faith in future Grace, and gratitude is not the key to living the Christian Life, what's this text about? Why is gratitude, why does it say the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of those who suppress the truth in ungodliness? [00:01:38]
In special Revelation as God begins to come to an Abraham and make him promises, come through prophets in the Old Testament and make them promises, come through Jesus Christ who is the yes and amen to all the promises of God as he comes and gives us Romans 8:32. [00:02:50]
Faith Embraces promises, so that's my answer to the question why it says gratitude here in this natural Revelation context rather than faith. Now one last question, why does it say that we suppress the truth in unrighteousness? Why doesn't it say we suppress the truth in ungodliness? [00:05:39]
The reason is that the truth being suppressed is godliness. The truth is godwardness, godness. There's a God of Deliverance Glory I'm to thank him continually, that's godliness, that's the vertical thing called godliness and that's what we don't like and we suppress that. [00:06:37]
The issue of Truth is an issue of the heart before it is an issue of the head. Have you seen that now and what I've read? The issue of whether you are a truth exalting person is first an issue of the loves of the heart before it is an issue of the rational ideas of the head. [00:11:46]
Your head is a Lackey in the service of the passions of your heart. We think we're rational folks, we think we use our heads very coolly and objectively to assess all the evidence about who we are and where we're going. We're not cool, we are burning with desire that did not say a certain thing. [00:12:26]
Our brains are slaves to our passions and therefore the only answer is God changing our hearts. You must be born again or you can't see the kingdom of heaven. That's desperate folks and until you come to that desperate condition and say if he's right, I'm really desperate. [00:13:36]
This heart is a desire Factory that is so massive in its power that we will constantly twist and distort and adjust and evade and spin the truth to make it fit exactly what we want. I see it in the mirror enough to know it and speak with forcefulness about it and it scares me to death. [00:14:24]
This is the Judgment that light you could say truth has come into the world and Men loved Darkness rather than the light. Why? Because their deeds were evil. Could he not have just as easily said because of unrighteousness? Unrighteousness suppresses truth, unrighteousness inclines us to love the darkness and hate the light. [00:15:20]
Commitment to truth will never happen until a profound heart work by which we fall out of love with evil happens. You must be born again. Well I suppose the last thing to say would be God is very angry at this verse 18 back here. He is very angry at the suppression of his truth. [00:17:00]
Be thankful for what God is displaying for you, embrace it, confess your sins, teach your children how not to hate the truth. There's a bondage in the human heart, president's Hearts, preachers Hearts, human hearts everywhere that if we don't get free by Sovereign Grace every one of us will be a spin doctor. [00:18:48]
