Transforming Character: The True Measure of Success

Summary

In our journey of faith, we often find ourselves grappling with the concept of success, both in our personal lives and within our ministries. True success, as defined by Christ, is not measured by external achievements or accolades but by the transformation of our character. Jesus challenges us to move beyond mere actions and to focus on who we are at our core. This transformation is the essence of discipleship, where we learn to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. This love naturally leads to a life of obedience, where doing what is right becomes second nature, not out of obligation but out of a transformed heart.

The process of change, however, is not without its challenges. Many of us struggle with habits and behaviors that seem insurmountable. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in understanding the root causes of our actions. It's not enough to simply will ourselves to change; we must delve deeper to uncover the underlying reasons for our behaviors. This requires a supportive community where we can explore these issues together, offering encouragement and accountability.

In our spiritual journey, we must also recognize the importance of the soul. The soul is the integrative force within us, bringing coherence and unity to our lives. When we neglect our soul, we experience fragmentation and disarray. Practices such as solitude, silence, and confession help us reconnect with our soul and with God, allowing us to experience true wholeness.

Confession, in particular, plays a vital role in this process. It is through confession that we confront the divisions within ourselves, acknowledging our sins and seeking reconciliation. This act of honesty and vulnerability is essential for genuine spiritual revival and transformation. As we confess, we break down the barriers that hinder our relationship with God and others, paving the way for healing and renewal.

Devotional

Day 1: Transformation Over Achievement
True success in life and ministry is not about external accomplishments or accolades but about the transformation of one's character. This transformation is the essence of discipleship, where individuals learn to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love their neighbors as themselves. This love naturally leads to a life of obedience, where doing what is right becomes second nature, not out of obligation but out of a transformed heart. The journey of faith challenges individuals to focus on who they are at their core, moving beyond mere actions to embrace a deeper, more meaningful change. [32:49]

"For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love." (2 Peter 1:5-7, ESV)

Reflection: In what areas of your life are you seeking external validation rather than focusing on internal transformation? How can you shift your focus to character development today?

Day 2: Understanding the Roots of Behavior
Change is challenging because it requires individuals to address the root causes of their behaviors. It's not enough to simply will oneself to change; one must delve deeper to uncover the underlying reasons for their actions. This process involves understanding why one acts the way they do and is best supported within a community of faith. A supportive community offers encouragement and accountability, helping individuals explore these issues together. By addressing the root causes, meaningful and lasting change becomes possible. [36:14]

"Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!" (Psalm 139:23-24, ESV)

Reflection: What is one habit or behavior you struggle with? Can you identify the root cause of this behavior and seek support from your community to address it?

Day 3: The Integrative Force of the Soul
The soul is the integrative force within individuals, bringing coherence and unity to their lives. When the soul is neglected, individuals experience fragmentation and disarray. Practices such as solitude, silence, and confession help individuals reconnect with their soul and with God, allowing them to experience true wholeness. These spiritual disciplines, though human activities, are designed to engage the grace of God, helping individuals meet God's grace in their daily lives, leading to spiritual growth and transformation. [49:12]

"My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me." (Psalm 63:8, ESV)

Reflection: How can you incorporate practices like solitude and silence into your daily routine to nurture your soul and experience greater wholeness?

Day 4: The Power of Confession
Confession is a powerful tool for spiritual transformation. It allows individuals to confront the divisions within themselves, acknowledging their sins and seeking reconciliation. This act of honesty and vulnerability is essential for genuine spiritual revival and transformation. Through confession, individuals break down the barriers that hinder their relationship with God and others, paving the way for healing and renewal. Confession is not just about admitting wrongs but about seeking a deeper connection with God and experiencing His grace. [53:21]

"Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." (James 5:16, ESV)

Reflection: Is there a sin or burden you need to confess today? How can you create a safe space for confession and reconciliation in your relationships?

Day 5: Engaging with God's Grace
Spiritual disciplines are designed to engage the grace of God, helping individuals meet God's grace in their daily lives. These disciplines, though human activities, are not about earning favor but about positioning oneself to receive God's transformative power. By practicing spiritual disciplines, individuals open themselves up to spiritual growth and transformation, allowing God's grace to work in and through them. This engagement with grace leads to a deeper understanding of God's love and a more profound experience of His presence. [47:04]

"But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me." (1 Corinthians 15:10, ESV)

Reflection: What spiritual discipline can you commit to this week to better engage with God's grace? How can this practice help you experience His transformative power in your life?

Quotes

True success for the minister is one of the most important things in learning how to live in the easy yoke with Christ and each one of us needs to think about what do we take as a mark of success for our ministry and our lives and we need to understand how that always involves the transformation of character. [00:32:00]

Disciples who go through the process of transformation so that they come out actually loving God with all their heart with all their soul with all their mind with all their strength and their neighbor as themselves and you know what easy routine obedience is what follows that is the good fruit that comes out of the good tree. [00:33:42]

The person who talks too much talks too much for a reason and what you do is you don't try to not talk too much you try to find out what is the reason why you talk too much and you change that and talking too much takes care of itself and that's the general pattern you want to look for. [00:36:14]

If you want to change find out where your action comes from will you actually use that language and say you need to want you need to not want what you want and not think what you now think and yes and so that is a different aim right than just start doing the right stuff right. [00:38:40]

You're capable of walking in all of the things that Jesus said to do there isn't anything that you can't do by the grace of God if you're willing to go through the process of finding the roots of the behavior and changing the roots if you're stuck on changing the behavior you kill yourself and everyone else will hate you. [00:40:09]

All of the human activities are designed to meet the grace of God and the practice of Silence can help you realize that you don't stop breathing when you stop talking pause you for just one second you said all when you say all human activities are designed to meet the grace of God. [00:47:04]

The soul is experienced as a kind of inner Force I like to compare it to an inner River uh that pulls everything in our world together and makes our experiences one life and when the soul isn't functional then our experiences are shattered conflicting uh set against one another and we use the word integrity. [00:49:12]

Confession actually is very important to discovering yourself soul and it's one of the disciplines that really can be revolutionary because it goes so deep into the unity of the person you see when essentially when you confess you give up splitting the self you stop running. [00:53:21]

Confession is very deep in the process of discovering the soul is that part of what I know you've talked about a lot of times when churches experience the spirit heavily when there's Revival confession will be one of the first signs of it it's nearly it's nearly inconceivable to me that you can have genuine Revival without confession. [00:55:05]

AA got it stuff from the church and it it's very sad because AA had to be invented uh to help people many of whom were in the church who could not be honest about what they were living through and so uh alcoholics anonymous uh Drew from the sources of Christian teaching about these things. [00:55:05]

You can imagine the difference that it would make if we began our churches our church services or our meetings together by saying hi I'm Dallas I'm a recovering sinner you imagine we started there um but so much of our services are devoted to a kind of pretending everything is fine. [00:55:05]

AA is one of the most brilliant illustrations of discipline and what it does on Earth. [00:55:05]
