Sermon Summary

Transformation does not stop in the mind or heart. God wants what He is doing inside a person to make its way down to that person’s hands. A transformed heart eventually produces transformed hands, because somebody ought to experience the Jesus coming out of His people. Families, coworkers, neighbors, the church, and the community should not only hear about love. They should feel it in how Christ’s people live.

Paul calls believers free, but that freedom is not permission to indulge the flesh or just look out for themselves. Freedom serves one another humbly in love. The culture says, “Get yours,” protect comfort, and do what makes somebody happy, but Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Christ touched lepers, fed hungry people, stopped for hurting people, washed feet, and finally stretched out His hands on the cross.

The Spirit calls believers to walk with Him, not visit Him every once in a while or call on Him only when trouble comes. The Spirit leads one step at a time. God does not always hand over the whole map for next year, a career, a family, or health. His Word is a lamp to the feet, giving enough light for today’s next step. The Spirit may call for love, encouragement, forgiveness, listening, or service today, and then another step tomorrow.

The fruit of the Spirit becomes the visible evidence that something is alive. People may not see a person’s prayer life, Bible reading, or worship playlist, but they will experience attitude, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control. Fruit tells people who somebody is and whose somebody is. Pressure does not create character. Pressure reveals what is already inside, just like squeezing an orange reveals orange juice.

Christ does not tell His branches to manufacture fruit through harder effort. Christ says that those who remain in Him will bear much fruit. Love, kindness, patience, goodness, and compassion all have hands. Love feeds the hungry, encourages the discouraged, sits with the hurting, and helps the fallen get back up. Transformation starts inside, but it should not stay there. The Spirit leads, fruit grows, and Christ’s love flows through willing hands.
