Transformed by Faith: Overcoming the World in Christ
Devotional
Day 1: Transformation Through New Birth
Being "born of God" signifies a profound transformation in our lives, akin to a child's birth into a new world. This new birth is not achieved through human effort but through faith in Jesus Christ, which brings about a radical change in our existence. When we are born of God, our spiritual identity is renewed, and we enter into a new relationship with God as His children. This transformation is not just a change in status but a complete renewal of our hearts and minds, enabling us to live in a way that reflects God's love and truth. [02:47]
1 Peter 1:23-25 (ESV): "Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for 'All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.' And this word is the good news that was preached to you."
Reflection: What specific area of your life needs transformation through faith in Jesus today? How can you invite Him into that area to bring about change?
Day 2: Trust and Reliance on Jesus
True belief in Jesus as the Christ goes beyond intellectual agreement; it involves a deep trust and reliance on Him as our Savior. This faith is not just about acknowledging His existence but about clinging to Him and making Him the center of our lives. When we trust in Jesus, we are invited to surrender our fears, doubts, and control, allowing Him to guide us in every aspect of our lives. This reliance on Jesus is a daily commitment to walk with Him, trusting that He is faithful and will lead us according to His perfect will. [06:49]
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."
Reflection: In what area of your life are you struggling to fully trust Jesus? What step can you take today to deepen your reliance on Him?
Day 3: Joyful Obedience to God's Commandments
God's commandments are not burdensome because they are gifts that guide us to live fulfilling lives. When we are born again, we are given new hearts that desire to serve Him, making His commandments a joy rather than a burden. Unlike the heavy yoke of religious rules, Jesus' commandments are simple: love Him and love His people. This joyful obedience stems from a heart transformed by God's love, where following His commandments becomes a natural expression of our love for Him. [17:22]
1 John 5:3-4 (ESV): "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith."
Reflection: How can you shift your perspective to see God's commandments as gifts rather than burdens? What is one commandment you can joyfully obey today?
Day 4: Victory Through Faith
Our victory over the world is rooted in our faith in Jesus, not in our efforts. By focusing on what Jesus has done for us, rather than on ourselves, we find the strength to overcome sin and the world. This abiding faith in Jesus is the key to our victory, as it empowers us to live in the freedom and power of His resurrection. Our identity in Christ, rather than our actions, is what enables us to be world overcomers, as we rely on His strength and not our own. [25:59]
1 John 4:4 (ESV): "Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
Reflection: What worldly challenge are you facing that requires you to rely on Jesus' victory? How can you focus on His strength rather than your own efforts today?
Day 5: Love Demonstrated Through Obedience
The love of God is demonstrated through obedience to His commandments. This love is not just an emotional experience but a lifelong commitment to living according to His will. Our love for God and others is intertwined, and as we love God, we naturally love His people. This obedience is a reflection of our relationship with God, where our actions align with His desires, and our love for Him is expressed through our love for others. [15:19]
1 John 3:18-19 (ESV): "Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him."
Reflection: How can you demonstrate your love for God through obedience today? What is one practical way you can show love to someone in your life?
Sermon Summary
In 1 John 5, we explore the profound concept of being "born of God" and its implications for our lives. This idea, though repeated throughout the letter, is crucial for understanding our spiritual transformation. Just as a child's life is radically changed upon birth, so too is our existence transformed when we are born of God. This new birth is not achieved through human effort or perfection but through faith in Jesus Christ. Believing in Jesus as the Christ is not merely an intellectual agreement but a deep trust and reliance on Him as our Savior.
This faith in Jesus brings about a change in our lives, enabling us to love God and others genuinely. Our love for God is demonstrated through obedience to His commandments, which are not burdensome. God's commandments are gifts that guide us to live fulfilling lives, and when we are born again, we are given new hearts that desire to serve Him. Unlike the burdensome religious rules of men, Jesus' commandments are simple: love Him and love His people.
Moreover, being born of God empowers us to overcome the world. This victory is not achieved through our efforts but through our faith in Jesus. Our identity in Christ, rather than our actions, is the key to overcoming the world. By focusing on what Jesus has done for us, rather than on ourselves, we find victory over sin and the world. This abiding faith in Jesus is what enables us to be world overcomers.

Sermon Clips
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and everyone who loves loves him who begot also loves him who is begotten of him now one of the things that John has mentioned a few times in this letter as we've made our way through it is this idea of being born of God. [00:01:24]
When a child is born that child's whole existence is changed the child isn't the same before it's born and after the born oh some things about it are the same you can just imagine the child there in the womb the child is conscious the child is aware the child knows what's going on. [00:02:44]
When somebody's born of God there's something changed in their life something wonderful a new ability to understand and live and walk in the love of God that they never knew of before and so the Bible repeats for us over and over again this idea of being born of God. [00:04:04]
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God it's not human achievement it's not a program that you go through it's a person that you trust in and rely on you know John has had a great emphasis throughout this letter and in recent weeks as we've been going through he's had a great emphasis on love. [00:04:48]
When the Bible talks about us believing in Jesus it's not just believing that he exists every demon in Hell believes that he exists it's that we trust in him that we rely on him that we cling to him it's as if this chair right here I could stand before you and say well I believe that that chair is a fine chair. [00:06:45]
If you're born of God if he gave you New Birth then you're going to love the other people who have the new birth how's that you'll love your brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ did you know that that's the common ground of every believer in Jesus it's not race it's not class it's not culture it's not language. [00:09:23]
By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his Commandments now I don't know if you've ever thought about it in those terms but John's going to tell you how you can know that you love your brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ you can know that you love them when you love God and obey his Commandments. [00:12:21]
For this is the love of God that we keep his Commandments and when and his Commandments are not not burdensome you know so often when we read in this letter of First John when we read a passage you just know that echoing in John's mind and in his ears are something that Jesus said and Jesus said in John 14:15. [00:14:50]
God's Commandments are gifts from him to show us the best and the most fulfilling life possible it's not as if God looks down from heaven and says well I want to see whoever's having fun down on Earth and I'm going to make a commandment to get them to stop it right away friends that's not the idea at all. [00:17:33]
His Commandments are not burdensome because when we're born again when we're born of God we're given new Hearts you know when you're born of God you have a desire to serve him and to please him that you didn't have before I'm not saying that it's complete I'm not saying that that you never have a sinful inclination. [00:18:28]
Whatever is born of God overcomes the world and this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith who is He Who overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the son of God well again he's been talking over and over again about being born of God and what it means in our life. [00:24:54]
We overcome primarily because of who we are in Jesus not because of what we do you know you can be trying to do a hundred things to please God but if you don't keep your mind focused on who you are in Jesus and what he's done for you you're going to get it all mixed up. [00:26:33]
