Transformed by Christ: Shining Light Through Generosity

Summary

In today's gathering, we explored the profound truth that our lives, much like pumpkins, can be transformed by Jesus. Just as a pumpkin is cleaned and carved to shine light from within, so too are we cleansed and filled with the light of Christ when we come to Him. This transformation is not merely external but deeply internal, as Jesus changes us from the inside out. We are reminded that our journey with Christ is ongoing, requiring continual repentance and commitment to His ways. This is a journey of faith, where we are called to live set apart from the world, maintaining our devotion to God.

We delved into Nehemiah 10, where the people of Israel recommitted themselves to God, recognizing the need for ongoing repentance and dedication. They understood that living like the world leads to compromise, while living set apart strengthens our devotion. This commitment was not just for the leaders but for everyone, emphasizing that being Christ-like is a collective responsibility. We are all called to be lights in the world, shining brightly for Jesus.

Generosity was another key theme, as we discussed how God's house thrives when His people give out of devotion rather than obligation. Giving should be a joyful act of worship, not a response to guilt or compulsion. Each of us has unique gifts and resources that God has entrusted to us for the benefit of His church. When we come together, using our gifts and resources, we create a vibrant community that reflects the love and light of Christ.

Finally, we were encouraged to be faithfully present in God's house, understanding that the church is not just a building but a community of believers. Our presence and participation strengthen the body of Christ, allowing us to burn brighter together. As we commit to using our time, talents, and treasures for God's glory, we become a beacon of hope and love in our community.

Devotional

Day 1: Transformation from Within
In our spiritual journey, transformation through Christ is both an internal and external process. Just as a pumpkin is cleaned and carved to shine light, Jesus cleanses us and fills us with His light. This transformation requires ongoing repentance and commitment to His ways. When we come to Jesus, He begins a work in us that changes our hearts and minds, allowing His light to shine through us. This is not a one-time event but a continual process of growth and renewal. As we walk with Christ, we are called to let go of old habits and embrace a new way of living that reflects His love and grace. [17:28]

"For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." (Philippians 2:13, ESV)

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need to invite Jesus to bring transformation? How can you take a step towards allowing His light to shine through you today?

Day 2: Living Set Apart
Living set apart means choosing a path that strengthens our devotion to God, rather than conforming to the ways of the world. The people of Israel in Nehemiah 10 recognized the importance of recommitting themselves to God, understanding that living like the world leads to compromise. As followers of Christ, we are called to be in the world but not of it, maintaining our focus on Christ and His teachings. This requires intentionality and a willingness to stand firm in our faith, even when it goes against the grain of societal norms. By living set apart, we demonstrate our commitment to God and become a testament to His transformative power. [43:14]

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways are you tempted to conform to the world? How can you intentionally choose to live set apart for God today?

Day 3: Generosity as Worship
Generosity is a reflection of our devotion to God and should be a joyful act of worship, not a response to guilt or obligation. When we give out of love and commitment, God's house thrives, and we create a vibrant community that reflects the love and light of Christ. Each of us has unique gifts and resources that God has entrusted to us for the benefit of His church. By giving generously, we participate in God's work and demonstrate our trust in His provision. This act of worship not only blesses others but also deepens our relationship with God as we align our hearts with His purposes. [49:25]

"Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7, ESV)

Reflection: What is one way you can practice generosity today, whether through your time, talents, or resources? How can you make this act of giving a joyful expression of worship?

Day 4: Using Our Gifts
God has entrusted each of us with unique gifts and resources for the benefit of His church. When we come together, using our gifts, we create a vibrant community that reflects the love and light of Christ. This collective responsibility calls us to actively participate in the life of the church, contributing to its mission and growth. By using our gifts, we not only serve others but also fulfill our God-given purpose, experiencing the joy and fulfillment that comes from being part of something greater than ourselves. As we steward our gifts well, we become a testament to God's creativity and generosity. [56:33]

"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." (1 Peter 4:10, ESV)

Reflection: What unique gifts or talents has God given you? How can you use them to serve your church community this week?

Day 5: Faithful Presence
The church is not just a building but a community of believers, and our presence and participation strengthen the body of Christ. By being faithfully present, we contribute to a community that burns brighter together, becoming a beacon of hope and love in our surroundings. This commitment involves using our time, talents, and treasures for God's glory, recognizing that our involvement is vital to the health and growth of the church. As we engage with our church community, we experience the joy of fellowship and the power of collective worship, drawing closer to God and each other. [01:01:06]

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25, ESV)

Reflection: How can you be more faithfully present in your church community? What steps can you take to strengthen your involvement and encourage others in their faith journey?

Quotes

And that kind of shows about how Jesus works in our lives. See, before we come to Jesus, we are dirty. We have sin and stains and baggage and all this other stuff that's going on in our lives. We're dirty. We're dirty. He takes us and he says, oh, Hadley, you've got a little dirt in your hair and you've kind of, you know, he brushes it off and he starts to clean us up. we're getting close to the end of our journey in nehemiah and as we get close we see that it is less about the kind of the challenges of starting from complete brokenness to a place where there is some wholeness and healing in the people of nehemiah but they're realizing at this point that their healing and wholeness isn't actually wholeness at all there's things that continue to pop up that they need to repent and turn from and commit to the lord [00:33:41] (32 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

It's always this, your spiritual walk isn't just an uphill climb to salvation. Jesus, it is this climb where we do good for a while, and then we kind of level off, and we go forward, and we go, and Lord willing, it isn't always an upward trend, but it is this following great, then not so much, then coming back, and that's where the people in Nehemiah are at. So they made this commitment to God, saying, we're going to commit to change. [00:36:44] (29 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

Living set apart keeps our devotion strong. In Nehemiah, they're talking about, you shouldn't marry non -Christians. In that day, it was non -Jews. But for us, if you are a Christian guy or girl, you should not be pursuing a relationship with a non -Christ follower. [00:43:52] (24 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

I'm going to be honest with you. I realized this in my own life where when I would cut corners and kind of be like, well, God's got grace. I would start to follow and I wouldn't be able to follow God. I wouldn't be able to hear the Holy Spirit as well in my life. As we follow and offer our whole lives up as sacrifices to him going, you know, I know God says we shouldn't do that. So I'm not going to do that. May Friesland Community Church be a church that shines not just a little bit for Jesus because we're not all working together, but as we put all of our efforts and every gift that God has given us to be that light here and around. Wouldn't it be great if we in the next year had people from Markazan, Dalton, Randolph, Fox Lake, I know I'm going the wrong way, Fox Lake, Partyville, all over the place. I said, there's something going on in Friesland Community Church and it's something special. [01:00:25] (40 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
