Transformative Power of Scripture in Spiritual Growth
Sermon Summary
In our journey of Experiencing God, we've explored worship and prayer, and today we delve into the transformative power of Scripture. Each of us connects with God in unique ways, and while reading Scripture may not be my primary method, it remains a vital part of our spiritual growth. Our focus today is on 2 Timothy 3, where Paul encourages Timothy, a young church leader, by emphasizing the importance of Scripture. Paul reminds us that all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, correcting, and equipping us for good works. This underscores the necessity of engaging with Scripture to align our lives with God's truth.
The church has historically played a role in guiding believers through rules and regulations, but today, it serves as a community for those seeking to grow in Christlikeness. Engaging with Scripture is essential for this transformation. I encourage you to find a Bible translation that resonates with you, whether it's the New International Version, New Living Translation, or another. The YouVersion Bible app is a fantastic tool, offering various translations and features like the verse of the day, which can help integrate Scripture into your daily routine.
Creating a habit of reading Scripture is akin to adopting a new lifestyle, much like a diet. It's not about diving into a two-hour study immediately but gradually incorporating Scripture into your daily life. Choose a time and place that works for you, and let Scripture shape your day. Understanding the context of what you read is crucial, much like reading an instruction manual before assembling something new. Scripture is alive and powerful, revealing our innermost thoughts and guiding us toward God's will.
There are numerous ways to engage with Scripture, from topical studies to reading plans that cover the entire Bible. The YouVersion app even offers a social aspect, allowing us to study together as a church community. Whatever method you choose, the goal is to experience God daily through His Word. As we continue this series, I challenge you to take a step forward this week by finding a way to incorporate Scripture into your life. Let's pray for guidance and understanding as we seek to know God more deeply through His Word.
Key Takeaways
1. based reading plans, to experience God more fully. [21:12] ** [21:12]
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. [00:04:24](23 seconds)

The end of that paragraph that Paul writes to Timothy is where I'm focusing today, that scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and helps us to realize what's wrong in our lives. It was, I believe, even last week how we talked a little bit about when Christ came and died, everything changed. [00:04:47](24 seconds)

The church is a place for all of us who are hurting people, who are sinners, who are apart from God to come and be together because we want to grow and learn to be more like Christ. So how does that happen in our lives? That happens by being in the scriptures, seeing what God's word says and has to do in our lives. [00:06:01](25 seconds)

New International and New Living Translation tend to bring the words a little more into today's light. And I think personally, New Living Translation does the best job of helping me to realize and recognize what Scripture is saying. So the point here is find a translation that works for you. Find a translation that works for you. It doesn't matter if somebody has a different one. Use different translations to go back and forth and to study what Scripture is really trying to say. The second thing is choose a time and a place. [00:09:37](20 seconds)

So when you're talking about reading into Scripture, if it's something that is not a regular part of your day, my recommendation is not just jump right in with a two-hour Bible study every single day of your life so that you can fulfill the need to read Scripture, but yet to change the habits of our day to include Scripture in it. Morning or earlier in the day is better because that can shape how your day unfolds if you're starting your day in Scripture. Personally, I wake up at 5 a.m. and go to work by 6. I'm not waking up at 4 so I can get into Scripture before that because I usually go to bed too late. [00:13:20](15 seconds)

When we make time for Scripture to be a part of who we are on a daily basis, it changes who we are. The next point is to take time for Scripture. The verse of the day is a wonderful tool. It's a launching point. And actually, if you go into the Bible app, it's not only just the verse of the day, but there's actually some guy that they've found to explain what that verse truly means to them in a 30-second video. For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword. Cutting through soul and spirit, between joint and marrow, it exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. [00:17:51](28 seconds)

Certainly there's grace and there's mercy to cover everything in our lives, but God calls us to take steps towards him. He calls us to be more like him every day. Within the Bible app, and there are other hard book copies if you prefer to have a book in your hand, there are devotionals. There are options in which we can get through and study scripture with some guidance along with that. [00:18:33](32 seconds)

One of the great things about the YouVersion Bible app is they've created this almost social media platform based on Scripture. One of the great things that we can do together as a church is even if we can't meet on a certain night of the week, we can go through different devotionals together. We can go through and we can read through them together. We can throw a comment in there. [00:21:27](28 seconds)

The challenge here as we move forward in continuing this Experiencing God series is whatever it looks like for you, take a step forward this week. Hopefully last week you were a little more intentional about praying to God in one way, shape, or form on a regular basis. This week the next step is to find a way to get into Scripture some way, shape, or form. [00:24:55](26 seconds)
