Transformative Power of Saying Yes to God
Summary
Summary:
Today, we explored the profound impact of saying "yes" to God, drawing inspiration from the life of Simon Peter. Peter's story illustrates how a single "yes" can transform our lives and align us with God's purpose. We began by reflecting on the concept of inertia, both in the physical world and in our spiritual journey. Just as inertia requires an initial push to set things in motion, our spiritual lives require a decisive "yes" to God to propel us forward.
Peter's encounter with Jesus, where he was asked to cast his nets into deep water, serves as a powerful example of the transformative power of obedience. Despite his initial reluctance, Peter's decision to follow Jesus' instruction led to an overwhelming catch of fish, symbolizing the abundance that comes from trusting God. This moment marked the beginning of Peter's journey as a disciple, illustrating the power of one "yes" to change the course of our lives.
We discussed three types of "yeses" that we can offer to God: the greatest yes, our shared yes, and our unique yes. The greatest yes is the decision to follow Jesus, a choice that offers eternal life and fulfillment beyond anything this world can offer. Our shared yes involves embracing the Great Commission, sharing the love of Jesus with others, and becoming fishers of people. Finally, our unique yes recognizes the individual calling and purpose God has for each of us, utilizing our unique gifts and passions to make an eternal impact.
Throughout the sermon, we were reminded that our past mistakes do not disqualify us from God's purpose. Jesus' redemptive power allows us to put the dominoes back in place and continue our journey with Him. By saying "yes" to God, we open ourselves to a life of abundance, purpose, and eternal significance.
Key Takeaways:
1. The Power of One Yes: Just as inertia requires an initial push, our spiritual journey begins with a decisive "yes" to God. This single act of obedience can set in motion a life of abundance and purpose, as seen in Peter's transformative encounter with Jesus. [17:36]

Day 1: The Initial Push of Obedience
In our spiritual journey, just as in the physical world, inertia can keep us stagnant until we make a decisive move. The story of Simon Peter illustrates the transformative power of saying "yes" to God. When Peter obeyed Jesus' instruction to cast his nets into deep water, despite his initial reluctance, he experienced an overwhelming catch of fish. This act of obedience set in motion a life of abundance and purpose for Peter. Similarly, our own "yes" to God can propel us forward into a life aligned with His purpose, breaking the inertia that holds us back. [17:36]
Isaiah 1:19-20 (ESV): "If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken."
Reflection: What is one area in your life where you feel spiritually stagnant? How can you take a step of obedience today to break that inertia and move forward in your journey with God?
Day 2: The Eternal Impact of Following Jesus
Saying "yes" to Jesus is the most significant decision we can make, offering eternal life and fulfillment beyond worldly achievements. Peter's choice to follow Jesus, even after a successful catch of fish, exemplifies the eternal impact of this decision. By prioritizing a relationship with Jesus over temporary successes, we align ourselves with a purpose that transcends this world. This greatest "yes" opens the door to a life of eternal significance and fulfillment that cannot be found elsewhere. [19:34]
Matthew 16:24-26 (ESV): "Then Jesus told his disciples, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?'"
Reflection: In what ways are you prioritizing worldly achievements over your relationship with Jesus? How can you realign your priorities to reflect the eternal significance of following Him?
Day 3: Embracing the Great Commission
Our shared "yes" involves embracing the Great Commission, a collective call for all believers to share the love of Jesus with others. By participating in this mission, we become fishers of people, spreading His light in the world. This shared commitment unites us in the greatest movement in history, as we work together to fulfill Jesus' command to make disciples of all nations. Embracing this call allows us to be part of something much larger than ourselves, impacting lives for eternity. [26:37]
2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (ESV): "All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us."
Reflection: Who in your life needs to hear about the love of Jesus? How can you take a step today to share His message of reconciliation with them?
Day 4: Discovering Your Unique Calling
God has a unique purpose for each of us, utilizing our individual gifts and passions to make an eternal impact. Embracing our unique calling allows us to step fully into the life God has designed for us, beyond the cookie-cutter expectations of the world. By recognizing and pursuing our unique "yes," we can use our talents and passions to serve God and others in a way that only we can. This personal journey of discovery leads to a fulfilling and impactful life. [29:33]
1 Peter 4:10-11 (ESV): "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ."
Reflection: What unique gifts and passions has God given you? How can you use them today to serve others and glorify God?
Day 5: Redemption and Restoration in Christ
Our past mistakes do not disqualify us from God's purpose. Jesus' redemptive power allows us to put the dominoes back in place and continue our journey with Him. By saying "yes" to God, we open ourselves to a life of abundance, purpose, and eternal significance, regardless of our past. Embracing His redemption and restoration enables us to move forward with confidence, knowing that our future is secure in His hands. [37:02]
Joel 2:25-26 (ESV): "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame."
Reflection: What past mistakes are you allowing to hold you back from God's purpose? How can you embrace Jesus' redemption and restoration today to move forward in your journey with Him?
Quotes
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. [00:12:35]
I believe that one yes could be a catalyst for the abundant life that Jesus has for each and every one of us. One yes has the power to catapult you into the calling that God has for you. One yes has the power to propel you into the purpose that God created you for. [00:17:36]
The greatest decision that you can make in your entire life, the greatest yes that you can say, is saying yes to following Jesus. You find yourself thirstier and thirstier trying to find meaning and fulfillment in this life, but you're never going to find the meaning and fulfillment that you were designed for until you say yes to the one that designed you. [00:19:34]
The greatest yes that you can make, the greatest yes that you can say to God, is not just something that will impact you here in this life, in this world, but it takes you beyond. It gives you eternal life. The greatest yes has an eternal impact on your life. [00:21:57]
The circumstances in our lives don't determine the Savior. Those fish might have made Peter a whole lot of money. He might have been set for weeks, months, years. But if he said yes to Jesus, he was set for eternity. Some of us need to make a decision to say yes to Jesus. [00:25:00]
The second yes that we can do is our shared yes. It's the opportunity that each and every one of us have that is not unique to each individual. It's actually something that we all have as a collective. When you say yes to Jesus, you have this opportunity to say this shared yes as well. [00:27:54]
It's a commission that Jesus gives to each and every one of us that are following him. I can tell you from experience because I've been that person that's like, okay, I said yes to Jesus, and I'm going to keep it at that. My relationship with Jesus is between me and him. It doesn't need to involve anyone else. [00:31:26]
The creator of the universe loves you so much. He is so powerful that he created the stars in the sky, the heavens, and the earth. But he loves you so much that he knows you by name. He knits you together in your mother's womb. He has a unique purpose and calling for you in your life. [00:28:58]
God can actually utilize that to make a bigger impact than we even thought. But so often we think to ourselves, well, that doesn't really fit into the cookie-cutter way that I think I'm supposed to live. You have a unique yes. And when you recognize that God can utilize every area of your life to make a difference, an eternal impact, and you start saying yes to that, you realize that your job, you're not just a nurse. [00:31:26]
The mistake that you made does not disqualify you from the purpose that God has for you, but you got to put the domino back in. And so that's what these dominoes are going to represent, saying yes, because that's what it is. Putting the domino back in is saying yes. [00:37:02]
The reality is, is God can utilize every area of your life in order to make an eternal impact. And the crazy thing is, is because he's a God of redemption, he can actually sometimes use the mistakes that we made to make a bigger impact than we ever thought. [00:37:02]
There is power in the yes. And that yes that you make today might catapult you into the calling that you have. That yes that you make today might propel you into the purpose that God has for you. So what is your yes? What is your one yes that you can make today? [00:39:39]
