In our new series "Jesus Walks," we embarked on a journey through the life of Jesus, leading up to Good Friday, Easter, and beyond into the birth of the church. Today, we delved into a famous conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, as recorded in John 3:1-21. This dialogue reveals profound truths about the nature of spiritual rebirth and the essence of our faith.
Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council, approached Jesus at night, acknowledging His divine authority due to the miraculous signs He performed. Jesus responded with a pivotal teaching: one must be born again to see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus, puzzled by the concept of being born a second time, prompted Jesus to explain that this rebirth is not physical but spiritual—born of water and the Spirit.
Jesus emphasized that the spiritual life is like the wind—unseen but evident through its effects. He expressed concern that Nicodemus, a teacher of Israel, did not understand these fundamental truths. Jesus then connected this teaching to the broader narrative of salvation history, referencing Moses lifting the serpent in the wilderness as a foreshadowing of His own crucifixion, which would bring eternal life to all who believe.
The core of our faith is encapsulated in John 3:16: God's love for the world led Him to give His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. This gift of love was not to condemn the world but to save it. However, Jesus also pointed out that people often prefer darkness to light because their deeds are evil, and they fear exposure. Yet, those who live by the truth come into the light, demonstrating that their actions are done in God's sight.
Throughout the sermon, I shared personal reflections and experiences, emphasizing that knowledge, status, or works do not grant access to the kingdom of God. It is a matter of the heart, a transformation that aligns us with God's will. I challenged the congregation to examine whether they truly understand and live out the essence of being born again, which is a spiritual transformation leading to a life of love and service, not just religious observance.
