Transformative Love: Living by the Spirit
Summary
In today's gathering, we celebrated the joy of baby dedications and the incredible work God is doing in our community, including the baptism of 40 individuals. We also heard a powerful testimony of a young woman who was freed from anxiety through the Holy Spirit's intervention. As we embark on our new series on the Fruits of the Spirit, we are reminded of the importance of God's presence in our lives. Our focus today is on the transformative power of love, the first fruit of the Spirit, and how it should be the foundation of our Christian walk.
Galatians 5:16-25 teaches us about the conflict between the flesh and the Spirit. We are called to live by the Spirit, which produces love, joy, peace, and other fruits, rather than being led by our fleshly desires, which lead to destruction. The analogy of a race car fueled by the wrong type of fuel illustrates how living by the flesh can cause us to limp through life, whereas being fueled by the Holy Spirit empowers us to live fully and reflect Christ.
The essence of our identity as Christians is rooted in love. Without love, our actions, no matter how spiritual or sacrificial, are empty and harsh, like a resounding gong. Love brings depth and beauty to our lives, aligning us with God's character. We explored Bernard of Clairvaux's four degrees of love, which guide us from self-centered love to a mature love that reflects God's love for us.
To deepen our experience of God's love, we must seek firsthand knowledge of Him and pursue Him as our first love. This involves a wholehearted commitment to knowing God personally and allowing His love to shape our identity. As we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, we invite His love to transform us, leading us to live in the fullness of His presence and purpose.
Key Takeaways:
1. The Conflict Between Flesh and Spirit: Every day, we face a choice between being led by our flesh or by the Spirit. The flesh leads to selfish desires and destruction, while the Spirit leads to life and the fruits of love, joy, and peace. Our lives should reflect the strength and goodness of God's Spirit working through us. [07:13]
2. The Power of Love: Love is the foundation of our Christian identity. Without love, our spiritual gifts and sacrifices are empty. Love brings God's character to our actions, transforming them into a melody that attracts others to Him. We must prioritize love in all we do. [15:24]
3. Degrees of Love: Bernard of Clairvaux's four degrees of love guide us from self-centered love to a mature love that reflects God's love. This journey involves moving from loving God for our benefit to loving Him for who He is, ultimately allowing His love to shape our identity. [27:49]
4. Seeking Firsthand Knowledge of God: To experience God's love deeply, we must seek Him personally through Scripture and prayer. This firsthand revelation allows us to know God intimately and align our lives with His will, rather than relying on secondhand knowledge. [11:48]
5. Returning to Our First Love: God's love should be our first love, pursued with wholehearted devotion. When we prioritize His love, we experience a transformation that changes how we see ourselves, others, and our purpose. This pursuit leads to a life empowered by the Holy Spirit. [30:50]

Day 1: The Daily Battle Between Flesh and Spirit
In our daily lives, we are constantly faced with the choice of being led by our flesh or by the Spirit. The flesh, with its selfish desires, leads to destruction, while the Spirit leads to life and the fruits of love, joy, and peace. This conflict is a central theme in the Christian journey, as we strive to reflect the strength and goodness of God's Spirit working through us. The analogy of a race car fueled by the wrong type of fuel illustrates how living by the flesh can cause us to limp through life, whereas being fueled by the Holy Spirit empowers us to live fully and reflect Christ. [07:13]
Galatians 5:17-18 (ESV): "For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law."
Reflection: Identify one area in your life where you feel the pull of the flesh. How can you invite the Holy Spirit to guide you in that area today?
Day 2: Love as the Core of Our Christian Identity
Love is the foundation of our Christian identity. Without love, our spiritual gifts and sacrifices are empty, like a resounding gong. Love brings God's character to our actions, transforming them into a melody that attracts others to Him. We must prioritize love in all we do, ensuring that it is the driving force behind our actions and interactions. This transformative power of love is essential for a life that truly reflects Christ. [15:24]
1 John 4:7-8 (ESV): "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love."
Reflection: Think of a recent interaction where love was not your guiding principle. How can you approach similar situations differently in the future, with love as your foundation?
Day 3: Journey Through the Degrees of Love
Bernard of Clairvaux's four degrees of love guide us from self-centered love to a mature love that reflects God's love. This journey involves moving from loving God for our benefit to loving Him for who He is, ultimately allowing His love to shape our identity. As we progress through these degrees, we learn to love selflessly, mirroring the love God has for us. This transformation is crucial for deepening our relationship with God and others. [27:49]
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV): "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
Reflection: Reflect on which degree of love you currently find yourself in. What steps can you take to move towards a more mature, selfless love?
Day 4: Seeking a Personal Revelation of God
To experience God's love deeply, we must seek Him personally through Scripture and prayer. This firsthand revelation allows us to know God intimately and align our lives with His will, rather than relying on secondhand knowledge. By pursuing a personal relationship with God, we open ourselves to His transformative love, which shapes our identity and purpose. This connection to the source of love is vital for a fulfilling Christian life. [11:48]
Jeremiah 29:13-14 (ESV): "You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile."
Reflection: Set aside time today to seek God through prayer and Scripture. What new insights or revelations do you receive about His love for you?
Day 5: Returning to Our First Love
God's love should be our first love, pursued with wholehearted devotion. When we prioritize His love, we experience a transformation that changes how we see ourselves, others, and our purpose. This pursuit leads to a life empowered by the Holy Spirit, as we align our lives with God's will and embrace His love as the foundation of our identity. Returning to our first love is a call to renew our commitment to God and His transformative power in our lives. [30:50]
Revelation 2:4-5 (ESV): "But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent."
Reflection: Reflect on your current relationship with God. What steps can you take to rekindle your first love for Him and make His love the center of your life?
Quotes
And it just really gives the essence of this whole series. It says, You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh. Rather, serve another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command, love your neighbour as yourself. If you bite and devour each other, watch out, or you will be destroyed by each other. [00:02:50] (22 seconds)
So I say, Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They're in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. [00:03:12] (18 seconds)
The flesh part of us is that part that is selfish, that wants what we want, that wants our desires met, that is about me and my little world and what I want to do with my life. It's about our selfish ambitions. It's about our human desires being met. It's that flesh part of it. It's that part of us that's in rebellion to God and wants what we want. [00:04:20] (25 seconds)
Aren't you grateful for the fruits of His Spirit? Well, we can live by the flesh. It leads to the fruit of death. It leads to the fruit of sin. It leads to the fruit of us being led by our own desires, which leads to destruction in our lives. But when we're led by the Spirit, it leads to God's goodness in our lives. [00:06:17] (18 seconds)
Fruit comes from being connected to the vine. Fruit reveals the strength of connection to the source. The stronger the connection, the greater the fruit. So the question for each and every one of us today, are we connected enough to Jesus to get the nutrients and the goodness that we need to produce fruit? [00:11:30] (18 seconds)
The next thing is fruit is a product of the tree. It's not its own creation. You know it's an apple tree because it produces apples. The fruit of the Spirit is the characteristics of who Christ is. We don't produce them ourselves. It's because of Him moving through us. We are the product of His Spirit moving in us. So is our focus on presenting fruit or being present with Him? [00:11:57] (26 seconds)
And literally what the Apostle Paul is saying is if I come to reveal Christ in my life, but I just have the gifts of the Holy Spirit working, I can speak in heavenly language, I can have knowledge, prophetic words, I can have all this happening in my life, but if I do not have love, it's this sound. [00:15:35] (27 seconds)
Love brings God's who to the what of what we do. It brings His character, it brings His Spirit, it brings His nature to what we do and who we are, and that is ultimately what we are called to do. See, we need this. We still need the sound, but the beauty of God's love makes it a melody. [00:17:28] (22 seconds)
God's love is at the core of our identity, as Christians, as followers of Him. We are made in His image, Christ, the Bible says. Made to reflect who He is. So if God is love, we are called to be love. We are called to know His love, reflect His love, and love be at the core of who we are as people. [00:23:37] (25 seconds)
This is a deeper and more mature love for God. It's where we love God not for what He gives but for who He is. It's His holiness, His love, His goodness, His character. It's where we get to know God and walk with Him personally, where we worship Him, where we are devoted to Him, where we discover more and more who He is. [00:27:04] (19 seconds)
Seek Him out for ourselves. When I got to know Craig, my husband, it was all about discovering Him for myself. We would skate into uni together and we were at the holding wrist stage, not the holding hand stage, because we were just friends. And we would skate into uni together just so I could spend time with him. [00:28:46] (23 seconds)
