Transformative Listening: Engaging Deeply with God's Word

Summary

In this week's message, we explored the profound difference between merely caring about what the Bible says and truly listening to it. This distinction is crucial for our spiritual growth and understanding. Listening to the Bible is not just about attending church services or Bible studies; it involves a deeper engagement with God's Word. We discussed the concept of "active listening," which requires us to meditate on the scriptures, allowing them to penetrate our hearts and transform our lives. This is akin to the "drive-through communication" concept, where we must ensure we receive what we truly need from God's Word, rather than just skimming through it.

Meditation on the Word involves more than just reading or hearing it; it requires us to dialogue with God, asking what He wants to communicate to us through the scriptures. This process helps us internalize His Word, making it a foundation for our lives. Memorizing scripture is a powerful tool in this process, as it allows the Holy Spirit to bring these words to our remembrance when we need them most. The scriptures we memorize as children often stay with us throughout our lives, providing guidance and comfort in times of need.

Furthermore, we discussed how the Word of God activates our faith. It sustains and anchors us, especially during life's challenges. The Bible doesn't promise a life free of difficulties, but it assures us of God's constant presence and faithfulness. By actively listening to God's Word, we allow the Holy Spirit to remind us of His promises, strengthening our faith and enabling us to navigate life's trials with confidence.

In conclusion, caring about listening to the Bible means engaging with it actively, meditating on it, and allowing it to shape our lives. This active listening is essential for spiritual growth and for experiencing the transformative power of God's Word in our daily lives.

Quotes

Psalms 119 and through Psalms 119, as well as many other places in the Bible, it talks about meditating on the word of God. And that word meditate oftentimes gets kind of skewed in our world that we live in today because meditation can take on a whole lot of incorrect meanings. But really what you described is exactly what meditate means. It means taking that passage of scripture and not just blowing through it by reading it or even blowing through it by hearing it if you're hearing it proclaimed, but going back to it and reading it and dialoguing with the Lord about it. You know, what are you trying to say out of this? [00:03:23] (37 seconds)

And you know, a great way that you can care about listening to what the word of God says is through actively memorizing scripture. You know, we grew up as kids and, you know, we learned key passages in... you know, Sunday school or vacation Bible school about memorizing scripture. And I can tell you today, the scriptures that I memorized whenever I was a kid, I still know them. And for those that come to our church know that I preach and teach from the new King James version. But when I was growing up, it was the King James version. And so I default back to those scriptures in the King James version because that's what's down inside of me. You know, that passage in Psalms 119 is a prime example. You know, your word have I hidden in my heart. [00:05:10] (48 seconds)

You know, what's a great thing about meditating on the word of God and memorizing the word of God and planting it deep inside your heart is that the Holy Spirit then is able to work in your life. To bring to remembrance the scriptures that you need. [00:06:01] (16 seconds)

And I think you really hit it on the head whenever you use that phrase, active listening. I know you do, in your job, you do a lot of leadership stuff, and that's pretty key in business to be able to be an active listener. How would you really define being an active listener as it relates to the Bible? [00:02:16] (21 seconds)

And I think that's part of the reason why the Bible oftentimes says meditate on God's word. You know, you mentioned... [00:03:16] (8 seconds)

Hiding it in my heart is a way of being able to listen to it. Yes. [00:05:43] (7 seconds)

in the midst of what you're going through in the different situations. And I, I mean, you know, in, in the, I'm 52 years old now and the number of years that I have lived, I can, I can tell you that oftentimes a verse will come to my mind that I wouldn't have even been thinking about in the midst of the situation. And that's the Holy Spirit working inside of you to remind you who God is, what he has said, what he has said about you and how he is faithful. And that kind of brings us to the faith side of this. You know, we were talking earlier about. [00:06:17] (32 seconds)

about faith? And how does the Word of God and hearing the Word of God activate our faith? [00:06:50] (7 seconds)

And so the Word of God sustains us. The Word of God anchors us. The Word of God activates our faith so that we can walk through. [00:07:51] (8 seconds)

this life and there's no promises anywhere in the bible that says that you won't have difficulties or that you won't have struggles anybody who has lived a moment in this life knows that things aren't always going to go the way that we want them to go yes [00:08:01] (15 seconds)

well and and and for me i would say that that in the midst of those knowing that you know in god's word he has promised [00:08:39] (9 seconds)

i will never leave you i will never forsake you and so even in those difficulties with the anchor and the sustainer of his word the acting of the holy spirit in our lives to bring those things to remembrance our faith activated because of those things and living in the light of the promise that he's walking through that with us man i tell you what those are encouraging things in the midst of difficulties yes [00:08:59] (29 seconds)

All right. So that's, I think, what we're talking about when we talk about caring about listening to the Word of God. It's active listening. It's digesting it inside. It's putting it in our heart. It's memorizing. It is allowing the Holy Spirit to use the Word of God. [00:09:24] (20 seconds)
