Transformative Journey: Embracing Community and Spiritual Growth

Summary

### Summary

Today, I shared my journey of spiritual growth and transformation over the past year. It all began when Jeff met Esther, who introduced us to a deeper form of worship and community. This journey has been about intentionally seeking God and allowing Him to change us from the inside out. I reflected on my past, where I coasted through my faith, attending church and prayer meetings but feeling a deep dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction led me to seek more, and through community and intentional practice, I began to experience a profound transformation.

One of the key aspects of this journey has been the importance of community. We cannot walk this path alone; we need each other for support and encouragement. This has increased my trust in God, especially during difficult times. I've learned to be patient in the waiting, knowing that only God can bring about the changes we need. This journey has also ignited a desire to go deeper with God, recognizing that what I'm doing now is still not enough.

I've become more aware of my critical and judgmental tendencies, and I'm learning to deal with them quickly. My daily practices have changed significantly; I read my Bible more, pray throughout the day, and have cut down on distractions like TV and social media. This has led to a slow but steady transformation, making me more open about my faith and more discerning about what truly satisfies.

Prayer has been a cornerstone of this journey. Through prayer walks, fasting, and early morning prayer meetings, I've experienced a deeper connection with God and a greater sense of community. This has made me more comfortable praying for others, even in unexpected places like the supermarket. Overall, this journey has been about becoming more like Christ, being patient with ourselves, and allowing God to do His work in us.

Devotional

Day 1: The Power of Community
Community is essential for spiritual growth and support. Walking the spiritual path alone is challenging and often ineffective. Community provides the support and encouragement we need to grow in our faith. It’s through shared experiences and mutual support that we can truly deepen our relationship with God. When we engage in a community, we find people who can hold us accountable, pray for us, and walk alongside us in our journey. This shared journey helps us to see God’s work in different ways and strengthens our faith as we witness His work in the lives of others. [47:09]

Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV): "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

Reflection: Think of a time when you felt supported by your community. How can you be that support for someone else this week?

Day 2: Patience in the Waiting
Trusting God during difficult times requires patience. We often want immediate solutions, but true faith involves waiting and trusting that God is working behind the scenes. This patience builds our trust in God and helps us grow spiritually. When we are in a season of waiting, it can be tempting to take matters into our own hands, but it is in these moments that our faith is tested and strengthened. By waiting on God, we learn to rely on His timing and His plans, which are always better than our own. [52:54]

Psalm 27:14 (ESV): "Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!"

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you are currently waiting on God? How can you practice patience and trust in His timing this week?

Day 3: Intentional Spiritual Practices
Daily practices like reading the Bible, praying, and cutting down on distractions are crucial for spiritual growth. These practices help us focus on God and recognize what truly satisfies our souls, rather than the fleeting pleasures of the world. By intentionally setting aside time each day to connect with God, we create space for Him to work in our lives. These practices may seem small, but over time, they lead to significant spiritual growth and transformation. [53:37]

Colossians 3:16 (ESV): "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."

Reflection: What is one distraction you can cut down on this week to make more time for intentional spiritual practices?

Day 4: Transformation Through Prayer
Prayer is a powerful tool for spiritual growth. Whether through prayer walks, fasting, or early morning prayer meetings, consistent prayer helps us connect with God and with each other. It also makes us more open to praying for others, even in unexpected situations. Through prayer, we invite God into our lives and allow Him to transform us from the inside out. This transformation is often slow and steady, but it leads to a deeper connection with God and a greater sense of His presence in our lives. [01:03:57]

Ephesians 6:18 (ESV): "Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints."

Reflection: How can you incorporate more prayer into your daily routine this week? Consider setting aside specific times for prayer or finding new ways to pray, such as prayer walks or fasting.

Day 5: Overcoming Personal Challenges
Spiritual growth often involves overcoming personal challenges, such as being an introvert or struggling with solitude. It’s important to be patient with ourselves and recognize that growth is a slow process. God works in us gradually, and we should not beat ourselves up for not getting everything right immediately. By acknowledging our challenges and seeking God’s help, we can overcome them and continue to grow in our faith. This process requires patience, perseverance, and a willingness to trust in God’s plan for our lives. [01:05:27]

James 1:2-4 (ESV): "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."

Reflection: What is one personal challenge you are currently facing in your spiritual journey? How can you seek God’s help to overcome it and continue to grow in your faith?

Quotes

1. "And so we went for the year. And it was a like-minded group of people who had a heart just to go deeper with God, not realizing just how God changes you. And then them to just practicing the way last, probably in the autumn. And so intentionally been doing that since, as I say, for almost a year." 2. "And we have to do it in community because you can't do it yourself. Because the community is the thing because we can support and encourage each other. And that's the best thing. And it's been, it's been quite a journey, actually, the start of a journey. We're only just started, For me, it's increased my trust in God." 3. "It's almost just, you know, we've got this, this level and need to go deeper. Something shifts in you. So that's where I'm becoming less critical and judgmental. I'm recognizing it and dealing with it quicker than I would before. I would just feed it, you know, and just go on about it. But it's now catching it quickly and dealing with that." 4. "Reading my Bible more and praying a lot throughout the day. Just chatting to God, not always asking. It's not always about asking. It's just about thanking him for the wee things. I'm becoming more open with my faith. Maybe I'm not doing the full evangelizing thing, but just a bit more open. It's not a quick process, slowly being changed and realizing, you know, the world doesn't satisfy. It does not satisfy." [54:14] (28 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "One of the challenges is listening and discerning what are my thoughts and what are God's thoughts. And the thing about this whole process is we've not to beat ourselves up. It's not about getting things right. It's just as we grow and we're formed into being more like him, not to beat ourselves up. Because it's so easy to get this kind of a heart attack. Oh, I've done this wrong." [58:33] (22 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

6. "The practice that's really impacted me is prayer. Probably about last, maybe February, Jenny, who's one of the group at the Wednesday night, had said to me, how about us doing the prayer and fasting together, Wilma? Just to encourage each other. And so we were going to do prayer walks. Now, I've never done prayer walks. I've never done fasting. We thought, okay, let's go for that." 7. "So the prayer thing in particular, we were doing that. And then Jeff says to me, oh, Barry's having a prayer meeting in the morning three days a week. Half six to seven now. It was just so natural. Like, okay, I'm going to do that. Whereas before, this shows how much God's transformed it. I always said, no way. I'm getting up at six in the morning to do this." 8. "And it's just been amazing. And it's such an encouragement for each other because we're so real about the things we're praying about. Obviously, we're praying about situations, but just the reality of how we're maybe struggling with things. And I'm finding it easier to pray for other people. I'm not a great group, big group people. I'm okay more in smaller groups." [01:05:27] (22 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "And I'd meet somebody in the supermarket car park. And they just start, and people have so many issues. And I'd walk, I'd be about to walk away, and I'd think, and I'd just say, can I pray for you? And I'm not a great big long prayer. And people are so desperate. They're so desperate for you to, you know, maybe not a great big, as I say, evangelizing. Just say God loves you and pray about the situation."
