Transformative Faith: Loving God and Overcoming the World
Devotional
Day 1: The Divine Act of New Birth
The new birth is a transformative act initiated by the Holy Spirit, which precedes and empowers our faith in Jesus as the Christ. This divine act changes our hearts, enabling us to see the beauty and glory of Christ, drawing us to treasure Him above all else. It is not merely an intellectual acknowledgment but a profound spiritual awakening that allows us to recognize Christ's surpassing worth. This transformation is the foundation of our faith, as it opens our eyes to the reality of who Jesus is and compels us to follow Him wholeheartedly. [01:49]
1 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV): "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you."
Reflection: Consider a moment when you felt a profound change in your heart towards Christ. How can you nurture this transformation daily to deepen your faith and love for Him?
Day 2: Treasuring Christ Above All
True belief in Jesus involves a heart transformation where we treasure Christ above all things. This belief is characterized by a deep love for the Father, recognizing Him as the source of our new life. It is not just about acknowledging facts but about experiencing a profound shift in our values and priorities. When we truly believe, we see Christ as our greatest treasure, and this changes how we live, love, and interact with the world around us. Our love for the Father grows as we understand His role in our spiritual rebirth and the new life we have in Christ. [02:40]
Colossians 3:1-2 (ESV): "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."
Reflection: What is one earthly thing you find yourself treasuring more than Christ? How can you begin to shift your focus to treasure Christ above all today?
Day 3: Love Expressed Through Obedience
Loving the Father naturally leads to loving His children, which is expressed through obedience to God's commandments. This love is not merely emotional but is demonstrated by making God our supreme treasure and following His will. When we are born of God, His commandments are not burdensome but become a source of joy. Our love for others is a reflection of our love for God, and it is through our obedience that we show genuine care and concern for our fellow believers. This obedience is not about legalism but about living in a way that honors God and reflects His love to the world. [05:17]
1 John 2:5-6 (ESV): "But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked."
Reflection: Think of a specific commandment of God that you find challenging to obey. How can you approach this commandment with joy and love, seeing it as an opportunity to express your love for God and others?
Day 4: Overcoming the World Through Faith
God's commandments are not burdensome when we are born of God. The new birth enables us to overcome the world, exposing its allurements as unsatisfying compared to the joy of obeying God. Our faith, born out of the new birth, reveals the world as unsatisfying and allows us to live in joyful obedience to God's will. This victory over the world is not achieved through our strength but through the faith that treasures Christ above all. As we grow in our faith, we find that the things of this world lose their appeal, and we are drawn more deeply into the joy and satisfaction found in Christ alone. [07:30]
1 John 4:4 (ESV): "Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
Reflection: Identify a worldly temptation that often distracts you from your faith. How can you rely on your faith in Christ to overcome this temptation and find joy in obedience to God?
Day 5: Joyful Obedience and Genuine Love
The victory that overcomes the world is our faith, which treasures Christ above all. This faith reveals the world as unsatisfying, allowing us to joyfully obey God's commandments and love others genuinely. Our love for fellow believers is not about imposing burdens but about sharing the joy of living in accordance with God's will. This joyful obedience is the true expression of love, as it reflects the transformation that has taken place in our hearts through the new birth. As we live out our faith, we demonstrate the love of Christ to those around us, inviting them to experience the same joy and freedom we have found in Him. [09:35]
Galatians 5:13-14 (ESV): "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
Reflection: How can you show genuine love to a fellow believer today in a way that reflects joyful obedience to God's commandments? What specific action can you take to serve them and demonstrate Christ's love?
Sermon Summary

This belief is not merely intellectual assent but a deep treasuring of Christ above all else. The new birth, initiated by the Holy Spirit, opens our eyes to the beauty and glory of Christ, drawing us irresistibly to Him. This transformation leads to a love for the Father, as we recognize Him as the source of our new life and faith.

Sermon Clips
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of Him. By this, we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome. [00:42:52]
Notice the tense of the verb, born of God. So it's very clear because of the tense of this verb that new birth precedes and is the power behind the enabling power behind faith. Faith, believing that Jesus is the Christ, comes from being born of God. God, the Holy Spirit, causes our dead hearts to be made alive. [00:91:45]
This doesn't mean believing a mere fact. This is having your eyes open so that when you see that Jesus is the long-expected, promise-fulfilling, glorious Christ, your heart is drawn out to treasure Him above all things. So you have one new birth, two faith in Christ. [00:153:59]
Loving those who are born of God or loving the children of God is explained not as a mere feeling of affection for them or doing what you think is good for them, but rather loving God, making God your supreme treasure, and then doing what God says. That constitutes love for the children, love for those who have been born of God. [00:312:96]
The love of God here and the love of God here produces love for the children of God, yields obedience to the commandments, which is the loving of the children of God. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome. [00:387:60]
When you joyfully obey the commandments of God, then you're in a position to love people. They'll feel your love as a joy-giving rather than burden-loading. Why is that true? How in the world do the commandments of God for us sinners cease to be burdensome? [00:455:68]
Born of God again yields faith. We saw that up here. Born of God yields believing. So new birth produces this treasuring of Christ above all things, and that overcomes the world. What does that mean? Well, if you go back to 2:15, you realize that the world in John is love not the world. [00:486:72]
The victory that we get through the new birth is that we become the kind of people who treasure Christ so much that the world is exposed. Let's put it like this: exposed as unsatisfying. And so the commandment obedience, the obedience to the commandments, ceases to be burdensome. [00:549:12]
New birth, that's by God's sovereign miracle working power, changing our hearts. And what the change effects immediately is faith in Jesus or treasuring Christ above all things. And that reveals God to be infinitely beautiful and valuable because He's the one who brought it about. [00:596:88]
Faith and love yield overcoming the world. Everything in the world that makes the commandments of God look burdensome, we fall out of love for that because we have this superior love for Jesus and love for the Father. The world is exposed for the unsatisfying bauble that it is. [00:627:27]
New birth brings about faith and love to God. This treasuring of God and Christ overcomes the world by exposing its unsatisfying character. That enables us to keep the commandments of God joyfully, and so we don't load people with burdens, and now we're in a position to do all that God says. [00:688:00]
I pray for us that we will love each other that way. [00:711:27]
