In our journey as a small but vibrant community, we have witnessed God working powerfully through those who have gone out from Bethlehem. Our graduates have become pastors, church planters, missionaries, and educators, impacting both local and global communities. Inspired by Pastor John’s ministry, I am committed to shepherding God’s people with His Word, especially in the inner city, and to fostering a deeper Christian fervor. Our mission is to let God’s love flow through us, even if it costs us our lives, so that people everywhere may find joy in God and praise Him.
Reflecting on my past, I spent 26 years seeking justice for the poor and oppressed, initially seeing a disconnect between my work and the teachings of Desiring God or reformed theology. It seemed like a different Christianity, focused more on proclaiming the gospel than on displaying it. However, attending the Desiring God Pastors Conference in 2010 was a turning point. Despite feeling out of place, I was moved by the reception of Eric Mason, an African-American pastor, and realized that John Piper’s teachings were not as distant from my values as I had thought.
Reading the Bethlehem Elder Affirmation of Faith, I encountered new truths that softened my heart and drew me closer to God. This led me to bring my family to Bethlehem, submit to the authority of the elders, and publicly profess the transformation God had worked in my heart. I am grateful for John Piper’s ministry, which has helped me find satisfaction in God and understand that God’s passion for His glory and our desire for satisfaction are united in worship. In this divine exchange, we receive mercy and happiness, while God receives honor and glory.
