Now here we're dealing with this aspect of the experience of this woman of Samaria in which we see that one of the main results of her encounter with our blessed Lord and Savior was that she came to realize who he was and was enjoying this fellowship with him and the way in which that is shown is of course that he clearly has become the dominating Factor in her life. [00:01:01]

The gospels were written if you like primarily to establish the person of Our Lord to comfort and secure the Christians who were being assailed by heresies even then as we are now but over and above that it does seem to me that what they're really saying to us is this now this is what was possible for people when he was actually here in the days of his flesh and this is what is still possible. [00:02:12]

He was a man again who had not been one of the disciples in the Time of Our Lord here in the world in the flesh he was a Pharisee and he was a persecutor and an opponent but the fact is of course that that was no disadvantage to him later he is in no sense inferior to the other Apostles. [00:03:42]

The whole object and purpose of an incident such as this is to bring us to that place and to that point in which we shall realize that it is possible for us to have communion and fellowship with the Lord even as these people did in the days of his flesh. [00:05:18]

Our position as Christians is not simply that we believe certain things about someone who once lived and who did certain things and who taught certain things but that we now have to live merely on the memory as it were and on the teaching which we have concerning him in the Bible over and above that there is clearly taught here a spiritual fellowship with him. [00:06:24]

The first thing which is absolutely essential is this is to believe in the possibility of it now I don't want to stay with this because in a sense all I've been saying so far has been dealing with this aspect of the question but this is undoubtedly the greatest difficulty that people don't believe in the very possibility of this. [00:08:32]

The glory of this gospel is that it takes up the whole men it's not merely for the intellect it's also for the sensibilities and for the feelings and therefore we've got to realize that this is something which is possible others are afraid of course of excesses and others are afraid that they're entering into the realm of the mystical. [00:09:28]

The first way in which you do so is to seek him in the scriptures well let me show you an example of this the kind of thing which I mean it's all shown very perfectly in the famous story of the two men on the road to em after the resurrection here are two men you see cast down and unhappy and dejected and yet the Lord joins them and they don't know him. [00:14:16]

You deliberately read your scriptures to look for him and suddenly you find him you'll find him in unexpected places in the Old Testament in the prophecies in the Psalms and even in the five books of Moses as he said himself and there as you read your scriptures you suddenly find him and he comes to you and he speaks to you through the scripture. [00:16:23]

We must always be obedient to him now we must never lose sight to the fact that we are dealing with a personal relationship and with an experience of a person I'm not talking merely about feelings and Sensations what I'm talking about is the thing the Apostle talks of that I may know him very well he's a person and what you're seeking is a knowledge of a person and experience of communion and fellowship with this blessed person. [00:29:53]

There is nothing more important in the Christian life than to be sensitive to his approaches to the times when he draws near and when he is giving you a kind of manifestation of himself you know the sort of thing to which I'm referring it generally comes as a surprise to you sometimes when you're not expecting it. [00:31:55]

Persistence you don't do this kind of thing by fits and starts you don't have a great spasm and then you cool off and forget all about it and then come back to it that's our story isn't it you've got to discipline yourself demands great discipline the Saints have always been characterized by their Stern self discipline and it's Absolut nutrious syndrome we can Fritter away our days.
