The Holy Spirit is not just an optional part of the Christian life; He is absolutely essential for true transformation. Without the Spirit, we cannot experience the radical change from spiritual death to life, nor can we be empowered to live as followers of Jesus. The Spirit convicts, regenerates, and fills believers, enabling them to move from old patterns into new life, just as Peter was transformed from fear to boldness. Seek after the Spirit, for only through Him can we be born again and live out the mission God has for us. [01:49]
John 3:5-8 (ESV)
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Reflection: In what area of your life do you most need the Holy Spirit’s transforming power today, and how can you intentionally seek His filling in that area?
The early church was marked by a deep devotion to the apostles’ teaching and the Scriptures, not just for knowledge but for obedience. They gathered together to hear, meditate on, and put into practice God’s Word, even when it was challenging or uncomfortable. True devotion means not neglecting the Scriptures or picking and choosing what we like, but humbly submitting to God’s truth and allowing it to shape our lives, even when it calls us to change. [16:17]
Acts 2:42 (ESV)
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Reflection: What is one specific command or teaching from Scripture you have been resisting or neglecting, and how can you take a step toward obedience this week?
God designed us to live out our faith in community, not isolation. The early believers were devoted to fellowship, loving, serving, forgiving, and caring for one another. Just as a lion preys on isolated animals, we become vulnerable when we separate ourselves from the body of Christ. True Christian community means being involved in each other’s lives, practicing hospitality, and fulfilling the “one another” commands of the New Testament, which cannot be done alone. [23:28]
Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Reflection: Who in your church family can you reach out to this week to encourage, serve, or support in a tangible way?
The early church was devoted to prayer, not just for physical needs but for deep spiritual needs as well. They prayed for one another’s well-being, strength, and obedience to God’s commands. Jesus Himself asked others to pray for Him, modeling the importance of intercessory prayer. We are called to move beyond surface-level prayers and become a people who are known for our commitment to lifting each other up before God, especially in our spiritual struggles. [27:24]
Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Reflection: Who is one person you can commit to praying for this week—not just for their physical needs, but for their spiritual growth and strength?
God calls each of us to take a next step in our journey of faith, whether it’s seeking the Spirit’s filling, devoting ourselves to Scripture, engaging more deeply in community, or committing to prayer. The Christian life is not static; it is a continual response to God’s leading, requiring courage and boldness to obey. Ask God to show you your next step and give you the faith to follow through, trusting that He is not done with you and will empower you for whatever He calls you to do. [36:04]
James 1:22 (ESV)
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Reflection: What is the next step of obedience God is prompting you to take, and what practical action will you commit to this week to move forward in faith?
Following Jesus is not just about a personal decision or a private faith; it’s about being brought into a new community, a family of faith, and being radically transformed by the Holy Spirit. When Jesus called his first disciples, he didn’t just invite them to follow him individually—he brought them together, gave them a mission, and filled them with his Spirit. This is the pattern we see throughout Scripture: conviction, repentance, transformation by the Spirit, baptism, and then being joined to a new community on mission together.
The church is not simply a place to attend, but a people to belong to. God’s design is that we would experience life together, reflecting the love and unity of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not just vertical, between us and God, but also horizontal, between us and one another. We are called to be devoted to the things that matter most: the teaching of Scripture, genuine fellowship, breaking bread together, and prayer.
Devotion is more than casual participation. The early believers were radically committed to learning and obeying God’s Word, not just for knowledge, but for transformation. They were deeply invested in one another’s lives, practicing love, forgiveness, service, and hospitality. They understood that isolation makes us vulnerable, but community strengthens and protects us. Their prayers went beyond surface-level needs, reaching into the depths of spiritual struggle and longing for God’s presence and power.
Peter’s transformation—from fearful denier to bold preacher—shows what the Spirit can do in a life surrendered to God. That same Spirit is available to us today, inviting us to seek a deeper filling, to move beyond routine, and to become a people marked by supernatural love, unity, and power. The next step for each of us may be to seek the Spirit more earnestly, to devote ourselves to Scripture, to invest in community, or to deepen our life of prayer. God is calling us to be a Spirit-filled, Spirit-led people who bring light and hope to our community.
Acts 2:36-47 — (This passage is the main text for the sermon, describing Peter’s sermon at Pentecost, the response of the crowd, and the life of the early church community.)
Jesus invites us to follow him and so we have this conviction and where we repent and we turn from our ways of living and we begin to follow Jesus and as a result of that he he changes our heart he does what we can't do by ourselves. [00:01:09]
God's called us to be a supernatural work a supernatural body of Christ that's being led and filled by the Holy Spirit of God and so last week when we talked about what it means to be born again it definitely means to be filled with the Holy Spirit because it's the Holy Spirit that can change our heart. [00:01:37]
It's the Holy Spirit that can empower us it's the Holy Spirit that can not just slightly adjust the way that we live but it's the Holy Spirit that can give us life i once was dead and now I'm alive i once was blind but now I can see so this is a radical radical transformation that takes place as a result of the work of God work of the Holy Spirit. [00:02:03]
That person is then baptized and then we see how they're connected with this new community with this faith family and then they're joined together with one another out on mission for God a part of the mission of God and so I I hopefully I tried to emphasize last week the need the essential need of being filled with that spirit. [00:02:28]
There is no other way to live as a Christian there's no other way that we can be born again except through the Holy Spirit but then we see secondly here that there's a connection that we're baptized into a new family and we're we're we're united together into this family of God this community of faith this covenant community of faith. [00:03:16]
When you start following Jesus it's a buy one get one free kind of thing you know we we want the forgiveness of sins we want to be reconciled with God but then we also receive the gift of his Holy Spirit that's poured out upon us so it's a BOGO it's a It's not just the forgiveness of sin but it's also new life that's given to us through the Holy Spirit. [00:04:40]
Peter he has one of the first disciples he has this radical transformation that takes place in his life 52 days earlier Peter was scared peter he didn't he he denied that he knew Jesus jesus told his disciples that this is what's going to happen he said "There's some of you here that you know you're going to run off and hide and and some of you going to deny me." [00:06:43]
So that same Peter 52 days later after being filled with the spirit after seeing the resurrection of Jesus after seeing the empty tomb after witnessing all that he saw and being filled with the spirit of God he had a new power a new confidence a new courage a new life as he was born again now Peter stands before this large crowd. [00:08:28]
Peter preaches his sermon he hitches it to the Old Testament he makes this connection of here's the Old Testament here's all the prophecies here's the truth of God's word and see how it's all being fulfilled in Jesus how everything points to Jesus it's all about Jesus and Peter makes this you know almost a lawyer's case using these two witnesses. [00:10:30]
We saw Jesus crucified we saw Jesus resurrected we saw the empty tomb we've seen his ascension into heaven we've seen the outpouring of the Holy Spirit we've experienced this born again life once I was scared of a little servant girl and now I'm preaching boldly in front of you the word of God but he says "Everybody needs to repent everybody needs to change direction everybody needs to be baptized and you need to receive the spirit of God." [00:11:03]
The Trinity has always been it's it's God who's always existed there there there's no frame of time where God didn't god always was always always will be and this trinitarian relationship that they have the father to the son and the holy spirit and how they relate to one another and it's a love relationship agape love binds this trinitarian godhead together. [00:12:03]
God invites us to experience that when we're reconciled with him that we can experience some of this relationship with one another this is God's design because it's so good for him this is the perfect way of existence is existing in a relationship with one another father son and holy spirit and God wants us to experience that with him but also with one another as well to experience this agape relationship that we can have with one another. [00:12:44]
If your closest person to you maybe it's a spouse maybe it's a friend if they were to describe Stacy what what is Stacy most devoted to what would be her top two or three things well she would say "I'm devoted to watching the Kansas City Chiefs win a Super Bowl i'm devoted to dogs over cats." [00:13:21]
We see first of all that that these first disciples who were filled with the spirit of God who were transformed radically transformed and changed these first disciples were devoted devoted to the apostles teaching to the scriptures now in in this day they didn't have their Bibles that they carried around on a Bible app with their phone they didn't have Bibles that were printed out that they could carry around either. [00:15:04]
They would meditate on the scriptures they would study the scriptures not just for some sort of hidden knowledge somewhere but they studied the scriptures so they could so they could obey them they weren't so interested a lot of times people ask me "Well pastor who's the beast in the book of Revelation?" I don't know i can give you my best guess i can tell you what I think but but instead of focusing on some of these obscure difficult things let's focus on let's get the the main objective down first. [00:15:56]
Our relationship to God is vitally important right but our relationship to God is also impacted by the relationships that we have with one another you can't separate those two out they go together it's essential the scriptures say that they were devoted not just to the ones that they liked not just to the Kansas City Chiefs fans they were devoted not just the ones who treated them well they were devoted to one another they were devoted to the Cornineia they were devoted to this fellowship that they have.
