Fear grips like a child holding breath beneath blankets, mistaking wind for intruders. Life’s “ladders” still rattle us—health scares, job insecurity, or relational fractures. These anxieties whisper lies that danger is always climbing toward us. Yet faith invites us to exhale, to trade suffocating control for trust in the One who guards the house. True security isn’t found in perfect stillness but in knowing whose hands hold the ladder. [19:35]

The call to transformed life starts with ordinary fear, the kind that can keep a person awake at night. Childhood worries about break-ins become a picture of bigger worries that still press on people: the future, health, job security, appearance, acceptance, and safety. The world keeps throwing things at people that can take the lead, weigh them down, consume their thoughts, and drive them toward worry and fear.

Monsters Inc. gives a picture of that kind of life through Sully. Sully begins fully bought into his world. The leaderboard matters. His status matters. The respect of the company and the approval of his boss matter. Monster City runs on fear, and Sully is good at producing it.

Boo changes everything. Boo loves Sully for no reason at all, even when he tries to get rid of her, even though he is a scary monster caught up in the world. Her love becomes a transformative love. Sully’s priorities flip, and he stops caring about scare totals, status, and being seen as the top guy. His one concern becomes loving Boo and doing what is right for her.

Romans 12 gives the real truth behind that picture. Paul moves from the big picture of God’s grace in Romans 1 through 11 into what life should look like for people who call themselves Christians. God owes humanity nothing, yet God gives mercy, patience, forgiveness, and new life through Jesus. Because of that mercy, Paul calls believers to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice, giving time, choices, desires, habits, and sins over to God each and every day.

Romans 12 also says not to be conformed to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of the mind. The renewed mind stops chasing what everyone else chases.
