God sets hope in front of His people by reminding them that Jesus has gone to prepare a place and is coming back again. That hope does not leave the church sitting still. The call to occupy while Christ is away means Christ lives in His people now, and His people become “hope dealers” in a world that has no real self-help, no New Age answer, and no hope outside of Jesus.

The picture of Disney World presses the power of vision. Walt Disney saw a family destination when everybody else saw swamp, bugs, water, and nothing worth buying. Vision sees the end before the end shows up. Change City’s vision for Columbus works the same way: God calls the church to see what He sees before the city looks like it can change.

Acts 18 places Paul in Corinth after hard opposition, real persecution, and seasons that could make any servant tired. Corinth looked like “what happens in Corinth stays in Corinth,” full of sex, money, compromise, broken homes, crooked leaders, and a get-over-before-somebody-gets-over-on-you spirit. The Lord spoke into that place and told Paul, “Don’t be afraid. Speak out. Don’t be silent.” God did not tell Paul to run from the mess. God told Paul that many people in that city belonged to Him, even before Paul could see them.

The vision calls the church to see society through God’s eyes. Brokenness cannot become the main thing, because staring only at broken windows, bad plumbing, and worn carpet makes the heart weary. God looks deeper than cosmetics. God sees the bones, the future, and the people He is already preparing.

The church’s calling becomes lighthouse work and lifeguard work. A dark world needs light that points ships home. Drowning people do not need silent lifeguards sitting in chairs saying, “Swim harder.” The gospel must be spoken, not only displayed, because sinners need to hear what Jesus has done.

The family becomes the first mission field. Marriage, children, parenting, honoring parents, and generational blessing matter because Satan knows that destroying the family helps destroy society. Schools become a battleground for hearts and minds, and every believer placed in a school becomes a missionary. Civic responsibility also belongs to the vision, because biblical values must shape voting, public leadership, school boards, city councils, and every place of influence.

The vision is not church attendance. The vision is changed people becoming change agents, reaching friends, relatives, acquaintances, neighbors, coworkers, classmates, enemies, and strangers until Columbus feels the ripple effect of the gospel.
