God calls us to train ourselves for godliness, not as isolated individuals but as a body, recognizing that our spiritual growth and discipline are meant to be lived out together for the benefit of the whole church. When we pursue Christlikeness, our progress strengthens the entire community, and our setbacks affect others as well, making our spiritual journey a shared responsibility and privilege. [06:54]
1 Timothy 4:7-10 (ESV)
"Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe."
Reflection: What is one spiritual discipline you can intentionally practice this week—not just for your own growth, but to strengthen and encourage your church family?
Our faith is personal but never private; every choice we make, every step forward or backward in our walk with Jesus, has a ripple effect on the entire body of Christ, just as the health of one part of a physical body affects the whole. When we show up, participate, and grow, we lift others up, but when we withdraw or neglect our spiritual health, the whole family feels the loss. [12:43]
1 Corinthians 12:26 (ESV)
"If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together."
Reflection: Who in your church family might be affected by your presence or absence this week, and how can you show up in a way that brings life and encouragement to them?
God’s grace is a gift, but it is meant to transform us and move us into action; we are not called to earn God’s love, but to respond to it with effort, allowing grace to have its full effect in our lives and in the lives of those around us. True spiritual growth comes from leaning into God’s power, working hard not to prove ourselves, but to become more like Christ for the sake of the world. [27:11]
1 Corinthians 15:10 (ESV)
"But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me."
Reflection: In what area of your life have you been tempted to be passive with God’s grace? How can you actively partner with God’s transforming work today?
God invites us into a family where we are known, needed, and given access to one another’s lives—where we move from being guests to full participants, sharing joys, struggles, and even the “fridge” of our hearts, so that no one remains isolated or unknown. This kind of vulnerable, open community is how we grow, support each other, and reflect Jesus to the world. [28:28]
Romans 12:10-13 (ESV)
"Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality."
Reflection: Who is one person you can invite deeper into your life this week—perhaps by sharing a meal, a prayer, or a personal struggle—so that you both experience true spiritual family?
The visible growth, unity, and love within the church are God’s testimony to the world of what happens when people are transformed by Jesus and live as a family; our collective flourishing is not just for us, but for the sake of our city and the gospel witness we bear together. When we encourage, pray for, and support one another, we become a signpost of hope and redemption to those around us. [33:55]
John 13:34-35 (ESV)
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Reflection: What is one practical way you can encourage or reach out to someone in your church family today, so that together you reflect Christ’s love to your community?
We all know what it’s like to start something with good intentions—maybe a new workout routine or a fitness goal—only to find our motivation fading without the support of others. In the same way, our journey of faith is not meant to be a solo endeavor. We are the body of Christ, and what each of us does, or fails to do, affects the whole. Our spiritual lives are personal, but never private. Just as a family feels the absence or pain of one member, so too does the church feel the impact of each person’s spiritual health, growth, or struggle.
God’s vision for us is not a collection of isolated individuals, but a visible, credible, and strong community that reflects Jesus to the world. This requires effort—not to earn God’s love, but to live out the grace we’ve received. Grace is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning. We are called to train ourselves for godliness, to grow in Christlikeness, and to do so together. Our progress in faith is not just for our own benefit, but for the encouragement and salvation of others. When one of us flourishes, the whole body is lifted; when one of us falters, the whole body feels the loss.
Paul’s words to Timothy remind us that our example matters—in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. We are to devote ourselves to Scripture, to teaching, to using our spiritual gifts, and to encouraging one another. Spiritual gifts are not just natural talents, but surprising ways God works through us to bless others. We are called to move from being mere attenders to active family members, giving and receiving “refrigerator rights”—the kind of deep, mutual access and care that marks true community.
This is not about spiritual elitism or earning badges, but about being transformed by grace and making that transformation visible to the world. Our city needs a church that looks like Jesus, and that happens when we lean in, support one another, and refuse to let anyone lag behind. We are saved, being saved, and will be saved—together. Our lives are inextricably bound up with one another, and our collective witness is God’s sign to the world of what happens when He gathers a people to love and serve together.
1 Timothy 4:6-16 (ESV) —
> 6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. 11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
I've been trying to help you understand that one of our issues is that we think our spiritual life is private. And we think to ourselves, the choices I make affect me only. So it doesn't matter what I do. Some of you have had parents, grandparents who lived that way. Who thought their secret addiction didn't affect anybody. Oh, we're fine. It's fine. It's just a private thing. But what happens when one person is overtaken and they just, they fall or they disappear. They're just not okay. They're just not involved. I mean, how many of you could at least tell a story, if it's not your own, of a parent or brother or sister or whatever who did their own little thing. It's only hurting me, but you saw it drag the family down like an anchor. [00:10:04] (58 seconds) #PrivateChoicesAffectAll
Train yourself for godliness. You've got the training environment. Literally the word gymnasium is in here. The sweaty work of just going for it. Just getting after it and learning the ways of Jesus. But he's been telling us not to invent rules. Don't make stuff up. Just keep your eyes on Jesus. We're going for that. Look at the character of Jesus. Look at the way he taught. Look at the way he loved. Look at the way he led. Look at the way he served. Do that. And let that be the thing. Because we are the body of Christ. We're not the body of your pastor. You're not the extension of my ministry. We're all becoming like Christ. [00:17:00] (47 seconds) #TrainForGodliness
I don't want to be a waste of grace. How many of you could say that out loud? I don't want to be a waste of grace. He offers us a gift. And then we're like, oh, thanks, Paul. Thanks for the gift. He's like, right. But remember, we're becoming transformed by grace. It's not just a passive recipient of it. So is grace having its full effect on you? Is this gift of God doing the work that it's supposed to do? This is a question for all of us. It matters if you're thriving. It really matters. [00:27:21] (33 seconds) #NotAWasteOfGrace
Watch for those that are lagging behind and be like, hey, let me run with you. I'll just back up. We'll just run together. Let's do this. Make sure we're staying with them. Their faith matters to you. And you have to remember that. Their faith matters to us. And then we get a chance to be a visible, joyful, united family as we stick together. [00:32:24] (24 seconds) #RunTogetherInFaith
Remember that your future with Christ is caught up with mine. That our life together in the city really matters for the city. Our gospel witness is connected and it's important. My growth is your growth. So keep encouraging me. Pray for me. Our progress is God's sign to the world that this is what happens when he gathers a group of people together to pour into one another. Love one another for the sake of the world. [00:33:38] (30 seconds) #GrowthTogetherForCity
