Mark 1:40 opens with a leper coming to Jesus, and this brother is carrying more than a skin disease. Leprosy has put boils on his body, shame on his name, and distance between him and his family, worship, and community. Leviticus has marked him unclean, alone, and outside the camp. The leper, though, does not run from Jesus. The leper runs to Jesus, falls down, begs him, and says, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
The leper’s question does not doubt Jesus’ ability. The leper knows Jesus can do it. The question is whether healing is in the Lord’s will. The will of God is the desire of God’s heart, and maturity learns to pray, “Lord, I know you can, but if it is not your will, I do not want it either.” Jesus is not slack concerning his ability, because he can heal any disease, raise any dead, and do whatever he wants to do.
Jesus, moved with compassion deep down on the inside, stretches out his hand and touches the untouchable man. The touch crosses the line that everybody else refused to cross. The law says touching a leper makes a person ceremonially unclean, but Jesus does not contract the man’s uncleanness. Jesus imparts healing, cleansing, wholeness, and a brand new life. Jesus says, “I am willing. Be cleansed,” and immediately the leprosy leaves.
The cleansing gives the man more than healthy skin. The cleansing gives him his life back, his access to worship back, his community back, and the possibility of family back. The touch changes absolutely everything for a brother who did not ask for the bad hand life dealt him.
Jesus tells the cleansed man to show himself to the priest and offer what Moses commanded as a testimony. The cleansed man cannot keep quiet, though, because a life changed by Jesus becomes like fire shut up in the bones. The man spreads the matter freely, and people come to Jesus from every direction.
The leper’s condition becomes a picture for every condition brought before the Lord. Jesus receives burdens, pain points, bad habits, sickness, heartbreak, darkness, and every issue too deep to fix alone. The name of Jesus belongs over everything. Faith comes to the altar, puts its weight on Christ, receives his touch, and walks away with its head up, trusting that God has done it.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Run to Jesus with your condition The leper does not wait until he looks clean enough to come near Jesus. His need becomes the very reason he comes. Desperation that runs toward Christ is not weakness, because it recognizes that no condition is too unclean for his mercy. [36:03]
- 2. God’s ability is never the question The leper knows Jesus can make him clean, and his question concerns the Lord’s will. Faith grows past demanding outcomes and learns to trust the heart of God. God’s refusal of something is not a lack of power, but may be the wisdom of a better will. [37:08]
- 3. Jesus touches the untouchable places Jesus does not stand at a safe distance from the leper’s shame and isolation. His holiness does not become contaminated by uncleanness. Christ brings cleansing into the places that everybody else avoids, and his touch gives back what pain has taken away. [42:02]
- 4. One touch can change everything Jesus speaks, and immediately the leprosy leaves. His touch restores more than outward circumstances, because it reaches identity, belonging, worship, and hope. A bad hand in life does not have the final word when Christ steps into the situation. [46:35]
- 5. Changed lives should tell somebody The cleansed man spreads the matter because silence cannot contain a life given back by Jesus. Fear and pride can hide the old story, but that old story may be the very thing God uses to free somebody else. Testimony turns personal mercy into an invitation for others to come to Christ.
