Revelation’s word to Pergamos puts a church right in the middle of temples, idol worship, political power, moral corruption, and real cost for following Jesus Christ. Jesus knows where his people dwell, even when the place is “where Satan’s throne is,” and he does not pretend the pressure is light. Christ commends faithfulness in a hard place, but Christ also exposes the danger that was creeping in from the inside. The danger was not public denial first. The danger was compromise.

The devil attacks directly when he can, but corruption becomes his next move when direct attack fails. The lie starts the way it started in Eden, “Did God really say?” and the answer must come the way Jesus answered in the wilderness, “It is written.” God’s people must know the Word for themselves, because social pressure, friendly advice, candy-coated customs, political correctness, and “everybody does it” can all become ways faith gets watered down one step at a time.

The story of the man in the Gerasenes shows that the devil often sees purpose before the person carrying it sees it. A man destined to preach in Decapolis was bound by a legion, and the storm on the sea came because Jesus was headed toward his deliverance. The storm did not mean disobedience, like Jonah’s storm. The storm came while Christ’s disciples were obeying. Jesus stayed in the boat, spoke “Peace, be still,” and brought them to the other side. The very water meant to destroy became the place where the demons in the pigs were destroyed.

God keeps showing the same pattern. The Nile meant to kill Hebrew boys carried Moses into Pharaoh’s palace. Haman’s gallows became Haman’s own end. Goliath’s sword became the instrument of Goliath’s death. The table is prepared in the presence of enemies, not because enemies are invited to enjoy it, but because God can make them watch what he has done.

Compromise whispers. It does not announce itself. Balaam could not curse whom God blessed, so Balaam taught corruption instead, and twenty-four thousand Israelites fell without the enemy lifting a sword. Samson’s strength could defeat armies, but compromise lowered him to grinding like an ox for his enemies. The call is therefore plain: no compromise. God’s Word exposes deception, cuts away compromise, heals the soul, and stands forever. “Let there be light” still has light shining, and whatever God speaks over a life is what faith must stand on.
