Sound doctrine anchors the church in reality: God’s self-revelation, not human preferences. This truth shapes identity, mission, and unity. Sound theology means knowing God as he has revealed himself in all of Scripture. Sound means healthy, reliable, accurate, trustworthy, and faithful. Scripture contains tensions that call for humility, not contradictions that give people permission to dismiss what they cannot fully explain.

God’s justice frees people from revenge. Christ’s substitution frees sinners from trying to prove their worth. Sound theology also protects the gospel itself, because a distorted view of God will eventually distort the cross, salvation, assurance, mission, and the hope of resurrection. Right theology should produce right living, and accurate knowledge of God will always lead to Jesus and his cross.
