“``I can't tell you how many boards I cut by hand and I never cut my hand. Ever once. Because my dad had warned me, if you don't do it this way, you're gonna get hurt. So do it this way. Always measure twice, cut once because boards can't be glued back together and wood is expensive. Then he said, use your thumb to guide it. Don't trust your hand to draw a straight line. Always use a square. And then what you've got to do, draw back. Never push forward. If you do, it's gonna hop out and cut your thumb. That was my dad's wisdom. Listen. There are certain decisions we make where we need to measure twice, cut once. Because once you do it, you can't glue it back together. And I think in those times, we need God's wisdom. We need the wisdom of others. And God has given us this book that's 31 chapters long that compiles the wisdom of the smartest dude that ever lived.”

“That struck me as odd. I thought it was going to say the crucible for refining silver, the furnace for refining gold. But people are tested by their suffering, their hard times. But that's not what the proverb says. The proverb says that a person is tested when they are victorious, when they are the best, when they win, and people begin to shout their name and clap for them. That's when a person is truly tested. What are they made of? In other words, what do you do when you win? What does it look like when you achieve? You see, the proverb is saying that that's the real test.”

“For years, I used to read a devotional called My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers, the most sold daily devotional ever. By so many copies, there's not even a close second. Oswald Chambers and My Utmost for His Highest had a devotional I never forgot. And in the devotional, he talked about as a follower of Jesus when people begin to recognize your giftedness or when you're successful and you succeed. He said, when someone comes up and gives you praise, you say thank you. Always say thank you. But as soon as you can, you kneel in the corner and you give God's thanks for your giftedness and your success. Because he said there's nothing more toxic for the soul than success that's not given to God but is self claimed.”

“You see, when we read Genesis chapter one as Christians where it says, and God says, let us create mankind in our image. In our image, we create mankind. We think Jesus is there. We believe that's true. I believe it is. But Hebrew scholars, when they hear, let us create mankind in our image, guess who they say is standing there? Wisdom. That wisdom is standing there and God co created all that there is with wisdom. Now, no matter how we look at this, here's what that's trying to teach us and this is key. If wisdom was involved with the creation of all things, then wisdom knows how it works. And if wisdom knows how it works and God offers us that wisdom in the book of Proverbs, then we should be wise enough to learn the wisdom and apply it to our lives.”
