The long around names the way God sometimes leads his people home. Exodus 13 says God did not lead Israel by the road through Philistine country, “though that was shorter,” because God knew one look at war might send them running back to Egypt. God was not worried because Israel’s army was too small. God knew their faith was too small. The issue was not whether Israel could beat the Philistines. The issue was whether Israel had learned to count on the God who had already beaten Egypt.

God’s longer road was not wasted road. The desert became the place for solitude, learning, growing, covenant making, and being formed into a people who could trust God for the challenges ahead. The tried and true path sometimes looks slower, but short and straight can be steeper, slipperier, and more dangerous than it first appears. The long way around can be the shortest way home because God knows what his people are not ready to face.

Joseph’s bones sit right in the middle of the story as a strange but beautiful reminder. Not one living Israelite had seen the promised land, but one dead man had. Joseph’s own life had taken a long and winding road through betrayal, a well, merchants, Potiphar’s house, prison, and finally Pharaoh’s palace. Joseph could say, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good,” because God had been with him all along. His bones carried Israel’s history, promise, and destiny, declaring that God would surely come to their aid and bring them home.

The pillar of cloud and pillar of fire show that God did not hand Israel a map. God gave them his presence. The cloud never left its place in front of the people, even though the people often left their place behind the cloud. Israel’s trust and doubt, obedience and disobedience, became part of the route God recalculated, until a two year journey became thirty eight more years of the long, long way around. Yet the cloud never left them.

Paul shows the same thing in the New Testament. Paul had pedigree, zeal, and direction, but Jesus met him and said, in effect, great progress, wrong path. Paul had to go back to square one and count everything loss compared with knowing Christ. Like Juno flying back toward Earth to receive a gravity boost, Paul’s Damascus Road became his deep space maneuver. Christ turned him around, gave him resurrection power, and sent him on the only road that could truly reach the goal.
