God accomplished no small thing when he parted the Red Sea. The waters completely changed Israel’s life in a matter of moments. God made fearful slaves into a free people, bringing them out of Egypt’s valley of tears and setting them where hope and possibility could abound. Through water, God saved his people.
The Red Sea also became more than a dramatic rescue story. God shaped his people through that water, because the road through the sea kept going after Israel reached dry land. Deuteronomy keeps pointing God’s people back to the exodus as God gives commands about Sabbath rest, food for those without enough, justice for widows, orphans, and strangers, festivals where everybody gets a chance to celebrate, and freedom for those held as slaves.
God repeatedly says, “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt.” That memory is not meant to produce a sentimental look backward. God joins Israel’s freedom to the kind of people Israel will become. God has made them free, and God now calls them to be a free people who help set others free from bondage to work, hunger, injustice, and slavery. Freedom is meant to become a way of life.
Baptism carries that same saving and shaping work forward through water. The font may not look like the Red Sea, and its waters may not rise up like skyscrapers, but God’s work there is no less dramatic. God claims people as his children, frees them from slavery to sin and death, and gives them a path to walk every day afterward.
The baptismal promises name that path: living among God’s faithful people, hearing God’s word, receiving the Lord’s Supper, proclaiming Christ in word and deed, serving all people after Jesus’ example, and striving for justice and peace in all the earth. Baptism is not only a single event. Baptism is the watery path of a whole life.
A generous life in Christ gives language to that path. God opens his people to receive gifts, even gifts that may not look like gifts in the moment, and then opens them again to release those gifts into the community as Christ’s body in the world. Looking back at God’s work among the congregation helps make the road ahead more clear. The one road begins at the font, continues through the life already lived, and stretches forward wherever God is still playing in the water and opening a path to walk.
