Thriving in Dependence: Embracing God's Faithfulness and Love
Summary
In today's gathering, we focused on the profound theme of dependence on God, emphasizing that apart from Him, we can do nothing. This dependence is akin to the air we breathe, a vital necessity for our spiritual lives. We are called to declare our dependence on God, recognizing that He is the vine and we are the branches, meant to bear fruit for the benefit of others. This fruitfulness is not just for personal gain but to bless those around us, filled with the Spirit, goodness, forgiveness, and hope that only God can provide.
We also explored the importance of prayer, particularly for those in leadership and ministry. Paul, Timothy, and Silas serve as examples, asking for prayers not for personal comfort but for the bold proclamation of the gospel. This challenges us to prioritize the spread of the gospel in our lives, ensuring it sprints through our communities, transforming lives and being honored above all else.
Furthermore, we discussed the need for deliverance from wickedness and evil, both from external forces and within the church. This calls for vigilance and prayer, asking God to protect His church and keep it focused on its mission. Trust in God's faithfulness is paramount, as He strengthens and guards us from the evil one. Our confidence should be in the Lord, not in ourselves, as we continue to follow His commands, particularly the command to love God and one another.
Finally, we are encouraged to endure with the love and perseverance of Christ. Just as Christ endured the cross for our sake, we are called to endure in our faith and service, trusting in God's promises and covenants. This endurance is not just about surviving but thriving in our spiritual journey, motivated by the love of God and the example of Christ.

Devotional
Day 1: Dependence on God as Our Lifeline
Our spiritual journey is deeply rooted in our dependence on God, much like the air we breathe. This dependence is not a sign of weakness but a recognition of our need for divine sustenance. God is the vine, and we are the branches, called to bear fruit that blesses others. This fruitfulness is not for personal gain but to share the Spirit, goodness, forgiveness, and hope that only God can provide. By declaring our dependence on Him, we align ourselves with His purpose, allowing His life-giving presence to flow through us and impact those around us. [56:07]
"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:4-5, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to declare your dependence on God today, and how can you actively seek His guidance and strength in those areas?
Day 2: Praying for Boldness in Proclaiming the Gospel
Prayer is a powerful tool, especially when directed towards the bold proclamation of the gospel. Paul, Timothy, and Silas exemplified this by seeking prayers not for personal comfort but for the courage to spread God's word. This challenges us to shift our prayer focus from personal needs to the urgent spread of the gospel, ensuring it transforms lives and communities. By prioritizing prayers for boldness, we align ourselves with God's mission, allowing His message to sprint through our communities and be honored above all else. [01:09:56]
"Pray also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak." (Ephesians 6:19-20, ESV)
Reflection: Who in your life needs to hear the gospel, and how can you pray for boldness to share it with them this week?
Day 3: Vigilance Against Evil
The need for deliverance from wickedness and evil is crucial, both from external forces and within the church. This calls for vigilance and prayer, asking God to protect His church and keep it focused on its mission. Trusting in God's faithfulness is paramount, as He strengthens and guards us from the evil one. Our confidence should be in the Lord, not in ourselves, as we continue to follow His commands, particularly the command to love God and one another. By remaining vigilant, we safeguard the church's mission and ensure the gospel's spread. [01:09:56]
"But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command." (2 Thessalonians 3:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: What specific steps can you take to remain vigilant against evil influences in your life and within your community?
Day 4: Trusting in God's Faithfulness
Our confidence should be rooted in God's faithfulness, not in our own abilities. He is the one who strengthens and guards us from the evil one, and we are called to follow His commands, particularly the command to love God and one another. Trusting in God's faithfulness means relying on His promises and covenants, knowing that He is always with us. This trust allows us to navigate life's challenges with assurance, knowing that God is in control and will guide us through every situation. [01:09:56]
"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful." (Hebrews 10:23, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you struggle to trust in God's faithfulness, and how can you remind yourself of His promises today?
Day 5: Enduring with Christ's Love
Endurance in our faith and service is essential, motivated by the love of God and the example of Christ. Just as Christ endured the cross for our sake, we are called to endure in our spiritual journey, trusting in God's promises and covenants. This endurance is not just about surviving but thriving, allowing us to grow and mature in our faith. By focusing on Christ's love and perseverance, we find the strength to continue our journey, knowing that God's love sustains us through every trial. [01:42:27]
"Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted." (Hebrews 12:3, ESV)
Reflection: How can you draw on Christ's example of endurance to persevere through a current challenge in your life?
Quotes
"Apart from You, we can do nothing. Lord, throughout this week, I know I've been listening to songs since summer camp and then in my home every night, I go to sleep with this and it can't get out of my head. I depend on You. May each of us in this room depend on You like the air that we breathe." [00:55:50]
"In this moment, Father God, may we declare our dependence, not independence, but dependence upon You. God, may You move in this congregation in such a powerful way. May You make us Your branches. May we cling to You as the vine and much we bear fruit, and as Brian Bain shared yesterday, Lord, the fruit that we bear is in for others around us to benefit from." [00:56:25]
"May there be so much fruit in this room that we're just filled with Your Spirit. We're filled with Your goodness. We're filled with Your forgiveness. We're filled with only the hope that You can bring. Lord, I don't know how we've entered this place today, but Lord, I pray that we've encountered You, the one true God, and we will say, Surely, the Lord was in this place." [00:56:55]
"So brothers and sisters, we're positioning ourselves transitioning ourselves in this away from the second coming to make sure we're doing the right things which would be living righteously this transition is to address this issue of working and waiting on the lord and continuing to share the gospel so he asked us to pray for us pray for us now who's he specifically talking about he opened his entire letter telling you who's writing this who's been ministering to them paul timothy and silas so paul's asking for the church to pray for them should you pray for your pastor i would say daily and here's the deal in case you need a heads up i'm asking right now pray for me daily pray pray for wisdom pay for power pray for preparation in the sermons that we're going to do leading the church pray for those things then you're a part of it you know how you stay connected to the church you pray for that kind of stuff you pray for that kind of stuff you pray for those that need you you do those type of things and you'll be connected paul knows this she's like listen i've invested in you now i'm asking you to pray that's your investment i want back is that you pray for me you pray for our team so he's asking them to pray and listen was paul persecuted yes was paul prosperous no he had to sometimes stop make money ask people for money that kind of stuff he wasn't carried away with like oh get me the best job i can possibly have no listen paul's not asking you to pray for his well -being paul's not asking you to pray for his health by the way i'm not saying any of these things are bad all right paul's not asking you to pray for his protection paul is asking you to pray for him that when he opens his mouth he will proclaim the gospel boldly that's what he's praying for not hey listen somebody's getting in my way and i and i feel persecuted can you pray that god delivers me from that by the way would that be a legitimate prayer yes would it be a legitimate prayer for paul to say listen uh paul timothy and silas and i you know we need some money we need we need you to pray for some provisions here that would have been a good thing too but paul's not focused on this in that letter although those things may be important he's saying listen it's not about my personal thing it's about the proclamation of the gospel of jesus christ christ christians i probably think we go through the busyness of our day and we don't really think that the most important thing is the gospel i i'm just being honest probably we will leave church and say yeah pastor did a good job hoorah and we'll leave yeah i got one marine in here yeah and we'll leave and then maybe the gospel will be in the background of our mind we won't really ponder much about it maybe we'll miss opportunities i want to encourage you today not to do that the word of the lord must spread now look what he asked for it must spread rapidly and be honored look right there in verse one it must spread rapidly and be honored now paul is usually in a word like a runner all right he uses his analogy a lot this means to sprint may the gospel sprint do you think your life represents a gospel sprint are you more like a sloth" [01:14:35]
"are you more like me and you're all over the place we want to be where that gospel takes us and it needs to rapidly spread god isn't telling us paul saying that it needs to run it needs to spread it needs to be an example to others it needs to motivate lives it needs to change lives and it needs to be honored it needs to be lifted up every week i make you lift your bibles up there's a reason we're honoring god's word and i know some people say read for the stand for the reading of the word all right it's the same type of principle honor god's word over and i put it up because it's over your life right it's also under your life because you're supposed to build your life upon the rock so are we honoring god's word and are we spreading god's word rapidly that's what paul saying pray for that what if we started praying that as a church your spouse that's not saved would get saved people that are broken would be getting healed people that are having addictions will be delivered i really believe that when the word rapidly spreads that way it brings some transformative power with it do we really believe that are we just sitting here and doing church or do we mean business like paul does now i know yesterday if you were here for the men's ministry i i just love brian brought a message yesterday and he was pretty on fire he was crying he was yelling at us he was doing all kinds of stuff he's not here to defend himself because he's with the youth that by the way the youth went to libertad today to support the youth group over there and their kids will be coming back here on our youth sunday in june so it'll be kind of exciting but one thing he said he visualized me when i'm up here he goes i don't know why like he keeps talking to me while he's preaching so i know what you feel like now when i call you out paul i know it's like oh my gosh please divert attention somewhere else right he says i just see you up there like just slaughtering things with your sword y 'all were there yesterday just slinging your sword around and just send people who cares what people think just keep cutting i don't know that i really do that but that's what he thinks right so he goes i can't imagine what going through his mind when i'm up here preaching right i probably have like these bombs going off that slow motion like and all these bombs and stuff exploding all this cool stuff like a site you know like a superhero movie that's cool that's what brian sees that's awesome so we are supposed to rapidly and then look what he says in verse 2 pray for this deliverance pray for this deliverance from wicked and evil people because not all have faith pray for deliverance from wicked and evil people because not all have faith there's two components here first of all if you don't know jesus christ paul puts you in the category of wicked and evil by the way we all once were that we all once were not part of god's kingdom we all once did not know jesus those people that don't have faith fall in that category but here's another thing i think paul's reminding us of here deliverance from wicked and evil people that can even rise up within the church church of jesus christ we need to protect our church we need to pray god deliver us from this evil one god deliver us from wickedness and evilness coming into our ranks amen and i'm not talking about people the snake is cunning the serpent is cunning listen what he did adam's right there and he comes up to eve and he says eve just eat of this fruit and she did right in front of adam's eyes don't think that things can't happen we need to be praying god deliver us from wicked people people of ill intent people that don't like the gospel people that mean to do harm to the church or people that are even just so consumed with their selfishness in their flesh that they bring that in the church nobody's ever seen that right come on ever seen that before let's confess maybe you have done it too before maybe we need to confess that maybe there are things we could go back and say man if i'd done that differently or maybe you don't think that way maybe you just don't care god wants to make sure that you're changed we're not supposed to be known as wicked and evil people but as our slide our main slide says we're supposed to be known as righteous people all right and then again people that don't know faith they don't know any different we need to make sure the gospel's going so that they might come to know jesus amen so pray for this deliverance from this wicked and evil plan of our enemy to keep the church at bay from doing what the church is supposed to do verse three encouragement to trust in the lord's faithfulness god is faithful he can strengthen you and guard you from the evil one so here paul gives us the answer he he's encouraging us here he says listen don't trust a man trust in god man will let you down man will fail listen your pastor will fail you at some listen i know somebody i keep with some of you haven't joined the church you're like i keep waiting to see if this church is for real if we haven't let you down we will eventually if your pastor has not failed you at some point i will it will happen i will assume i will assume one thing it won't be intentional or purposeful but things happen there will be things that happen in your life there's no perfect church because there's no perfect christian all right but we are walking together learning to walk in the light walk in love and serve the lord and serve one another and as we do that we become a better people amen so let's make sure that we're encouraged to be find faithfulness in the lord because he is always faithful listen proverbs 3 5 through 6 trust in the lord with all your heart lean not on your own understanding but acknowledge him in all your ways and he will direct your paths starts with trusting in the lord well we trust in the lord whatever we're going through because he is faithful even though we are not and by the way isn't that kind of the story of the testament god's people would become unfaithful and he would just say just come back to me in any of this unfaithfulness and faithfulness stuff of god god is always going to be faithful to his covenants god is always going to be faithful to his promises god is always listen if god says he's going to save you if you confess your sin he will save you if god says he will forgive you if you confess your sin after you're a believer and he'll cleanse you from all unrighteousness first john 1 9 he will do it he is a person that is 100 percent faithful where we may not be completely faithful now should we be trustworthy yes should we be dependable yes should we be loyal yes all these things and by the way those are big traits of mine when i take person i'm a loyalist to a fault i'm loyal i'm faithful i wanted to be devoted to those type of things so i naturally like that kind of stuff coming back too and vice versa all right that's god's character man god wants you to be faithful back to him may we be found faithful as the lord is faithful amen and then he says this god will keep his promises and covenants he will but he says he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one listen you're going to face things in your life where you need god's strength a lot of football players and basketball players get it wrong they put that i did it when i was a chaplain for kent state they put philippians 4 13 under their eyes i can do all things through christ jesus who strengthens me by the way somebody's going to lose on the football field somebody's going to lose like i'm gonna i i'm a good i'm a good sport tennessee beat kentucky sometimes the bad guys win" [01:18:49]
"i'm just joking so but somebody's going to lose and somebody's going to win but in the game of life the gospel makes us victorious that song we sang i'm praying and waiting for victories yet to come there are victories yet before us that god has in store if we will just trust him if we'll just turn to him if we let him be our strength it's more of a spiritual thing god be my strength then the next thing also that happens he'll guard you from evil the evil one specifically remember the evil one he's talking about is this lawlessness one and satan himself will be coming and he says listen i'm going to guard you from that i've told you that so trust me no matter what listen what can a man take from you that god's given you he can't take anything from you what god has already given you man can take your life but who can take your soul only god why do we have to fear man the bible is constantly in the psalms and in the new testament speaking that kind of vernacular that who cares what if a man takes takes everything from us and kills us and defeats us but if we have jesus we're winners make sure we never lose sight of that no matter what we face and that god will guard you in those times verse four have confidence in the lord not confidence in yourself it's good to say i have confidence i love brian i don't look at brian this way but brian said yesterday um he he gets the same thing i get sometimes some people confuse confidence with arrogance and he was talking about that yesterday in his talk and he goes i'm confident in the lord but at confidence in the lord sometimes people say well you're so arrogant no it's confidence are you confident in god people should see it who's out of you people should see the confidence of god in you i trust in god i'm confident in the lord i believe in the lord i believe in his word i believe he can do these things that he says he's done and then listen what paul says do we continue to do what we commanded you now it's not that you do necessarily what paul's commanding what's paul doing he's writing the word of god inspired by the holy spirit he goes the things that i have taught you the things that you have read the things that i've been speaking to you keep doing those things keep doing those things so let me tell you a little story so i take breath mints all the time and you can thank me when you come up and shake my hand okay so seanetta's got these new breath mints and i i just say and they're called command mints because when you say command and she gives you the mint it's like okay i'm good to go now right god just commands it command the bad stuff to go away command the bad breath to go away amen command god's goodness in your life command follow god's commands and let him control your life when we follow a command we're following god so here's what happens if a soldier's out there and they drill this into you i i'm assuming the marines maybe the air force and the navy probably all had this stuff right you had to learn you never left your duty until what oh i love it all navy marines air force everybody got that right do not leave your post until you're properly relieved it's a command they drill into you it's called a general order every singer soldier airman sailor doesn't matter who you are marine you will do that and if you do that then your pulse will never be vacated and then everything works in order when we follow god's command everything works in order make sure we're about god's ways that we continue to do what he has commanded us to do and let me tell you the greatest commandment he gave you might think oh this is it's love god and love one another how you doing with that don't leave your post love god and love one another that's something that's a general order for every christian we are commanded to love god we are commanded to love one another our confidence must be in the lord we must follow god's character god's character is true and we must continue in god's commands the last thing is may god then he's almost like a prayer may god direct your hearts to his love and to his endurance christ's endurance so let's talk about this how much does god love you" [01:30:47]
"i know i see some of you doing this he spread out his arm and he died on a cross for you he gave everything to prove his love to you so paul's saying may the lord direct you into god's love this love that's agape love this love that says i love you no matter what i do love you and i love you for what's best for you see that's the true in this it's not a selfish love it's a selfless love but it's a love that's motivated by god's intent i want what's best for you and god loved you so that you can know himself by jesus christ dying on a cross for you the next thing is christ's endurance what did christ endure what's power the cross man he endured the cross he knew he was going to listen he who knew no sin became sin so that we might be the righteousness of god wow who gets the betterment of that we do will we endure no matter what we face will we endure until christ comes again like christ did on the cross by the way most likely none of us in here are going to die on a cross most likely none of us in here will be martyrs we might we don't know that a day might not come that way but until then may we know god's love and be strengthened by it and encouraged by it and may we live in such a way that we move with christ's endurance did christ quit did christ serve and said in fact he said he came not to be served but to serve us right he came to be a sacrifice for our behalf when in the garden of gethsemane when he prayed and he said god if there be any other way remove this cup i don't want to die like this" [01:31:50]
"when he did not get another answer what did jesus do he turned his face to the cross that was set before him for our good he never quit now look i know that you're saying i'm not jesus i know i'm not either but i want to try to live by this love and this endurance and i want to pray i want us to pray may we pray that god will direct each of us to love like jesus is that a good prayer all right you need to be praying that this week and then may we also do this lord may you give this entire church everyone from pastor on down the endurance of christ could you imagine could you imagine that i mean i thought about this in my office this week what would that look like first of all i know some of you are like pastor chris i'm an introvert i just cannot speak to people god will use you in a different way god bless you and then if you're like me god help you you're gonna be on like steroids or if you're like brother kim you may never get out of this place today if you talk to him amen love you brother there's some of us to talk you know and some of us that are shakers and movers and could you imagine what god would do with us if we said god just pour out your love let me love like you and god give me the endurance of christ even to endure to something that i don't want now i want to i want to turn this to you some of you may be in here and you're like this all sounds good or this is all weird to me because i'm not a i'm not a christ follower yet all right if that's you it starts with the first action is saying jesus i'm a sinner and i need you in my life will you forgive me my sins and come into my life and he will do that in your life so if you've not done that i want to encourage you we're going to have altar call you can come up and talk to me or brother brendan you know and and and we'll be up front the next thing is though for you christian those of us that are in here that are in christ man i cannot preach more clearly a challenging sermon that we need to step up our game amen so it's kind of like this could you imagine all these people in the elite eight by the way i'm pulling for sec teams even though i normally wouldn't i'm pulling for the balls now okay see see everybody's now they'll probably lose because i'm voting for them but that's all right yeah so but i don't care if auburn did auburn win yesterday yeah there you go so we got some sec teams in there maybe one of them will win but could you imagine those coaches getting in there by the way the auburn coach that says it says call god is their shirt their shirt their shirt says call god they wear them on their on their shirts if you've ever seen that could you imagine if a coach got up for the for the march madness coming up and they said it's okay if we lose just go out there and just it's okay just do the best you can could you imagine i mean if you played sports could you that really motivates doesn't it that would be like motivating right that'd be like yay team could you imagine if you just get pumped up and you're doing the chest bumps and you're you're giving each other five and you're out there and you're fired up and you're like let's do this man let's go that's how you win do we have that kind of enthusiasm for the kingdom of god do we have that kind of endurance in us until listen chris chris buckman until you're dead you ain't done all right so until you're dead you ain't done keep serving the lord keep serving the lord keep the endurance of the lord keep loving like the lord keep doing what paul's encouraging them right now find strength in the lord keep going and trusting in the lord if we're doing those things god's going to do great and amazing things in your life and in our church and that excites me how about you that excites me come on yeah i mean if we had champagne i'd be blowing the baubles right now all right we'd be doing all that having fun i'm not advocating that by the way don't anybody take that all right we'll go get the grape juice we'll shake up the bubbly grape juice amen there we go and we would do do i mean chris might not like me to tomorrow cleaning up the carpet but who cares amen let's go be victorious for jesus and if you need christ in your life i ask you to give jesus that chance today let's pray heavenly father we come to you in the name of jesus and we thank you for all the great things you have done we thank you for paul's letter encouraging the church in thessalonica and now encouraging us the church in lexington park lord may we be found faithful as you are faithful may we find our place our trust in you must may we follow your commands may we love you may we have strength in you and lord may we be found with your endurance today i pray these things over your church and may we leave this place knowing the urgency of the gospel to rapidly spread the word of god that's every church that's every church's purpose and that's every christian's purpose may we do it well i pray in jesus name and all god's people said amen let's stand and sing you come as the lord lead you" [01:32:53]
