Romans 8 opens with a shout: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those which are in Christ Jesus.” The text declares that being in Christ means something fundamentally has changed. The word “made” matters. The Spirit made believers free without any help from them. God did not merely give instructions for getting free. God did it. Christ broke the power of sin. Christ released people from bondage. Christ manufactured the new life that human willpower could never produce. That is why praise belongs to Him alone. He did it.

The law of sin once demanded obedience to the flesh, but the Spirit has broken that law’s dominion. The law of death once appeared to have the final say, but eternal life means natural death is not the end. The body may perish, but the believer’s spirit lives forever with the Lord. The promise of heaven turns death from final loss into sudden glory.

Freedom is also not only freedom from something. God freed His people for something. Israel came out of Egypt so that Israel could serve God, and believers are made free so that God can use them. The Spirit changes everything, making believers free from bondage and free for the purpose of God.
