THIRST FOR GOD | Psalm 42 | July 12, 2026

Psalm 42 speaks to disappointed, discouraged, despairing, even depressed saints with raw honesty. The psalm opens with a thirsty deer panting after the water brooks, and that picture becomes the soul panting after God, not just after relief. The title, “Maschil for the sons of Korah,” even carries grace, because Korah’s line had rebellion in its history, yet his spared children became worship leaders. The spared family shows that a person can turn the corner, start over, and serve God out of gratefulness.

The thirsty deer shows that every person thirsts for something. The world offers money, pleasure, position, and power, and those things may satisfy for a little while, but thirst comes back. Jesus gives the living water that becomes “a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Only Jesus satisfies the deepest longings of the heart.

The tears in Psalm 42 become the psalmist’s meat day and night while enemies keep asking, “Where is thy God?” The memory of going with the multitude to the house of God brings both ache and hope. The gathered people of God matter, especially when discouragement says to stay away. The shield of faith was not made for isolation; believers need to lock shields together like the old Roman testudo and withstand the fiery darts of the wicked together.

The downcast soul receives a good talking to: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” The psalmist does not deny feelings, but he does not let feelings drive. Feelings are legitimate, but they are not reliable. The phrase “cast down” pictures a sheep stuck on its back, helpless and exposed, unable to set itself right. The good shepherd is needed, because only the shepherd can put the sheep back on its feet.

The waves and billows show the psalmist moving from drought to drowning. Yet even the waters are called “thy waterspouts,” “thy waves,” and “thy billows,” because God is still Lord over the storm. God does not always remove the trial, but God is deeper still, and God is with his people through waters and fire. The refrain of hope changes the countenance before it changes the circumstances: “Hope thou in God, for I shall yet praise him.” The gospel then calls the thirsty to Christ, not by works of righteousness, but according to God’s mercy, through Jesus Christ the Savior.
