Paul calls the church to think like Jesus, but that kind of thinking does not come through religious striving. Christianity is first a relationship with the living Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Spirit of Christ transforms those who have been born again, making Christlikeness more than an external attempt to do better. The Christian life begins with grace received and then becomes a life of grace extended.
Paul grounds unity in the overflowing blessings believers already possess: encouragement in Christ, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, affection, and sympathy. The Christian is not half full or merely full. The Christian’s cup overflows because God has given every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. That settled identity frees believers from treating every relationship as an opportunity to get something. Jesus washed feet because He knew where He came from, where He was going, and that the Father had put all things into His hands.
Paul then confronts selfish ambition and empty glory. Selfish ambition creates rivalry and factionalism, while conceit tries to manufacture significance through the approval of others. Humility does not mean pretending that God has given no gifts or calling truth untrue. Humility owns who God has made a person to be, then lives with self-forgetfulness for the glory of God. Christlike humility notices people, listens for needs, and deliberately counts others as more significant.
Paul gives Christ as the perfect embodiment of this mind. Jesus, eternally and fully God, did not empty Himself of deity. Christ took the form of a servant, entered humanity, and refused to use divine status for His own advantage. Jesus valued service over status and obedience over self-preservation. The cross shows the depth of His humility, as the God-man willingly bore death in the place of sinners.
God the Father highly exalted the crucified Son and gave Him the name above every name. Jesus Christ is Lord, Yahweh, and every knee will bow before Him. The Father’s approval, not self-promotion, becomes the pattern for humble service. Christ’s people can serve without being seen, credited, or applauded because what the Father says is true matters most. Communion remembers that the body and blood of Christ save, and that overflowing grace now forms a people ready to pour themselves out for others.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Grace fills the Christian’s cup [45:26] Christ gives His people far more than enough spiritual provision. The gospel does not leave believers scrambling to prove their worth or begging every relationship to meet ultimate needs. Grace makes service possible because Christ has already secured identity, love, and belonging. [45:26]
- 2. Humility notices people and needs [54:46] Paul describes humility as a deliberate way of seeing. Christlike concern does not erase legitimate personal needs, but it refuses to make personal interests the only interests that matter. Love pays careful attention when another person’s pain, burden, or need comes into view. [54:46]
- 3. Jesus chose service over status [01:03:21] Christ possessed full equality with God, yet He took the form of a servant. The incarnation reveals that true greatness is not found in protecting position, demanding recognition, or using power for self-advantage. Jesus gives Himself away without ceasing to be who He is. [63:21]
- 4. The Father exalts the humble [01:09:29] Jesus did not promote Himself, though He truly is Lord. The Father publicly vindicated and exalted the Son after His obedience unto death. God’s approval gives believers freedom to serve faithfully even when no one else sees, understands, or gives credit. [69:29]
- 5. Every knee will bow to Jesus [01:11:01] Christ’s lordship will one day be confessed by every tongue. The gospel invites sinners to bow willingly now, by faith, before the judgment day arrives. Jesus bore the judgment sinners deserve so that repentance and faith might lead to salvation rather than condemnation.
