Genesis 13 puts everyday decisions right in front of faith. The decisions about sports, family, debt, a home, conflict, and the things that look good all bring the same question: is this honoring God, or is this a personal plan being forced into God’s plan? Imperfect faith can make bad decisions, but God is still there and can bring His people back to His path.
Abram comes back from Egypt with more livestock, silver, and gold, and he comes back to the altar where he had called on the Lord before. Egypt was only a sojourn, a temporary place, not his home. Abram had made a bad decision there by lying about Sarai, yet God did not leave him in Egypt. God preserved His promise and brought Abram back to the place where he could call on Him again.
The conflict between Abram’s and Lot’s herdsmen shows how faith handles strife. Abram refuses to let possessions divide family. Abram gives Lot the first choice because Abram already has something greater than the best piece of land: God’s promise. The whole land is before them, but God had already promised Abram that He would take care of him. Faith frees Abram from having to grab, control, or fight for what appears best in the moment.
Lot lifts up his eyes and sees the Jordan Valley. The land looks lush, well watered, and beautiful, like the garden of the Lord and like Egypt. Lot chooses what looks shiny on the outside, but Sodom is sitting underneath that choice. Sodom is full of wickedness, worry, conflict, and danger. The shiny thing can come with debt, stress, temptation, and burdens that were never considered at first.
God then tells Abram to lift up his eyes. Lot lifts up his eyes to choose what he wants, but Abram lifts up his eyes to see what God promises. God gives Abram the land, descendants like the dust of the earth, and a future that does not depend on Abram fighting for the best spot. Abram responds by moving his tent and building another altar to the Lord.
Christ gives believers that same kind of promise. Salvation is not held together by perfect decisions, church attendance, good works, or getting everything right. Jesus has paid the debt of sin in full. The promise remains when faith is imperfect, and that promise gives freedom to seek God in every decision, return to Him after failure, and give hope to people burdened by the choices of this world.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Faith should guide everyday decisions. The ordinary choices of life can carry just as much spiritual weight as the big ones. Decisions about money, family, schedules, possessions, and commitments should be brought before God. Faith asks more than, “Can this be done?” It asks, “Is this honoring God?” [09:13]
- 2. God meets people after bad choices. Abram’s failure in Egypt did not cancel God’s presence or promise. God brought Abram back to the altar, back to worship, and back to the path ahead. Imperfect faith does not mean abandoned faith when Christ holds the promise. [16:09]
- 3. God’s promise loosens the grip on possessions. Abram could let Lot choose first because he trusted what God had already promised. Faith does not need to fight for every advantage, prove itself through status, or panic over what others receive. God’s provision may not always look flashy, but it gives what is truly needed. [20:16]
- 4. Shiny choices can hide deep trouble. Lot saw water, rich land, and opportunity, but he did not see the wickedness of Sodom. The things that look best from a distance can bring anxiety, debt, temptation, and strife once a person moves close to them. Wisdom looks deeper than appearances and keeps God in the decision. [24:57]
- 5. Christ secures the greater promised land. God’s promise to Abram pointed beyond a physical place and toward God’s faithful work through His people. Christ gives salvation as a gift, not as payment for enough good decisions or good works. Jesus has paid the debt of sin, and His promise stands for eternity.
