The Power of Mentorship and Personal Growth
Summary
In reflecting on the journey of life and the impact of mentorship, I shared a personal story about my early work experience with Martin Resnick at Yuta Wood Gardens. Martin was a man who treated everyone with dignity and respect, knowing each person by name and engaging with them personally. This experience taught me the value of hard work and the importance of seeking opportunities beyond the immediate task at hand. I was inspired by Martin's encouragement to pursue further education, which led me to ask about my future prospects. His willingness to support my college education, even partially, was a pivotal moment in my life. This act of kindness and belief in my potential was a testament to the power of mentorship and the importance of having someone who believes in you.
The story underscores the significance of exposure to different life options, especially for young people. It highlights the critical role mentors play in shaping our paths and the necessity of having role models in our lives. The absence of mentoring and strong family units is a challenge many face today, but the Bible reminds us not to despise small beginnings. Every small step is part of a larger journey towards improvement and achievement. By remembering our history and the people who have helped us along the way, we can continue to grow and make our lives and the world around us better. This journey is not just about personal success but about parallel growth with those who have walked alongside us.

Quotes
By recollection, of Martin Resnick and my entry into his world was when a friend of mine told me he had a job at Yuta Wood Gardens, and so I went and applied and got a job as a dishwasher. And then, Martin Resnick grabbed my attention early because of how he treated people in the kitchen. You were treated like, you know, he had dignity. He knew your name. He would speak to you. He would stop and talk to you. [00:00:00]
What you did and what made you so outstanding was, I remember so well Tony, we would give you a job washing dishes, you did it as quickly as you could, and when you had finished, you came back and said, "What else can I do?" You weren't content just to do that job. You wanted to know was there anything else that you could do for the company. [00:00:38]
I went into his office and asked him whether there was any future. What could I do to go further, more? I mean, I did have that part of me that wouldn't be satisfied where I was, and that's when you told me, "Well, you're going to have to go to college." [00:00:53]
You came to me, you said to me that you thought you were going to get a scholarship to go to college and you lost your scholarship. You weren't going to get the scholarship to go to college; you hoped you'd get one. I came back and I said to you, "I will pay for one half of your college education. You find the other half." [00:01:11]
When I think of Martin Resnick and his part in my life, I saw him operate, and that was just watching. I would be studying it as best I could as a teenager, because I was studying it in the context of a world I'd never seen. And that's why I know exposure to young people is so important, that they see options that can make them better. [00:01:31]
I had mentors also, and I talked about them even though it was over 50 years ago, because it seems one of the biggest problems we have there's no mentoring, no family unit, no father image or mother image. Words cannot express my deep love for you and your family and for your investment and involvement. [00:01:55]
The Bible says, "Despise not the day of small things." So you start where you are then you see what God plans to do with it. I think every day it's just another step towards making the place better for yourself and the achievements that you achieve. We talk about the history. [00:02:16]
The history is a great way to remember how we got there and then go forward and to keep on getting better for what we do. And you've done well. And you've done that, and along we've paralleled our lives. I'm proud of you. [00:02:34]
