The Light of Christ in Human Darkness

Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

In him was life and the life was the light of men and the light shineth in darkness and the Darkness comprehended it not now there is the answer the second cause of trouble in other words is this that there's something wrong with us we're not only wrong in our understanding of him and in our failure to understand him as we ought but we also fail to realize the truth concerning ourselves and the two things of course obviously operate together. [00:57:35]

The characteristic of the world at the present moment is darkness and so John tells us that that that is indeed the trouble that this light about which he's been speaking is now to be found shining in darkness and there at once he puts before us the whole position the world that was made by him and without him was not anything made that was made it was made perfectly God looked upon it and saw that it was good and it was all a manifestation of this light and this life it's no longer like that it's become darkness. [00:12:43]

Man as he is by nature is in this darkness and the whole world is in this Darkness now what does it mean well let's look at it like that for a moment that man has now BN born into this world is in the dark here he is in this darkness that is round and about us and this light is shining into this Darkness now what is this Darkness well it is essentially of course the darkness of ignorance. [00:18:23]

Man is ignorant of that how much time and thought and attention do you think is being given to that aspect of the matter in this world in which we find ourselves at this hour but then he's equally ignorant about himself this is the great tragedy to me of the present time that man who's trying to exalt himself is at the same time insulting himself and he insults himself by not realizing his own true greatness. [00:23:22]

Man thinks of himself only as an animal and he thinks therefore of a satisfaction to the animal part of his life his real interest in putting an end to war is that he may have peace to go on sinning that's why he's against War it just disturbs his good time it's just an interruption a nuisance work is becoming an interruption and a nuisance what one man wants is money in order that he can have his enjoyments and anything that interrupts the enjoyment is a nuisance. [00:25:23]

Man's mind has become twisted and perverted I read to you that terrifying passage from the first chapter of the epistle to the Romans at the beginning in order that I might bring this home to you in its own Vivid and terrif if in manner I've heard preachers before now saying that that portion of scripture should never be read in public what utter nonsense I'd almost say that today it should be read every Sunday in order that we may begin to understand the world in which we are living. [00:29:39]

The light shineth in darkness isn't that true at this moment isn't the light of this gospel shining in a dark land at this present time throughout the whole world you see nothing but this Darkness this gross Darkness over the eyes of the people and the consequent muddle and confusion and even hopelessness and despair but you know there's something even worse than all I've said and here it is the most terrible thing about the darkness that has entered into men is that it makes him incapable of recognizing the light even when it's shown him. [00:34:01]

The light shineth in darkness and the Darkness comprehended it not I'm reading the authorized version and I'm doing so because I believe it's right you will find that your modern versions your Revis Standard Version and the new English Bible and so on they don't translate it like this they say the darkness overcame it not or the darkness quenched it not or something like that but I want to argue for the correctness of this authorized version translation which says that the darkness comprehended or apprehended it not which I believe is the true meaning. [00:35:05]

The vast majority of people in this country don't believe this gospel why not well they say because of their Enlightenment because they're educated and cultured the real answer is because they're blind because of the darkness that is in them because they're incapable of it they cannot recognize the light even when it shines before them in the face of Jesus Christ but even worse man in darkness not only cannot recognize the light he hates it and he despises it. [00:38:15]

The light shineth in the darkness it goes on in spite of this and it is the only light there is no philosophy or human teaching that can deal with such a predicament and we have it on record that the World by wisdom knew not God the Greek philosophers were feeling after him if happily they might feel after him and find him but they couldn't your greatest brains have never arrived at God they never will there is only one light that can give us light on God no man have seen God at any time the only begotten son which is in the bosom of the father he ha declared him. [00:42:51]

The light is shining in the darkness of a fallen Eden what your Old Testament oh it's nothing but the light shining in the darkness look at lot pleading there in Sodom and Gomorrah look at no before that in the days before the flood for 120 years building his ark pleading with these people what is it oh it's the glimmer of light the light of Jesus Christ shining in the darkness no lot Abraham the Patriarchs the whole nation of Israel the prophets what is this it's the light shining in the darkness there was no other light but the light went on Shining. [00:44:33]

It takes this light from Heaven to Enlighten our Darkness to give us understanding and knowledge and it comes from this blessed Lord and he's still doing it he sent his holy spirit upon the church in order that she might be made an agency for disseminating the light shining it for and you and I as Christian people are those who have received the light we have been enlightened ye were sometimes Darkness but now are he light in the Lord live as the children of light says the apostle.
