Genesis opens with “In the beginning, God,” and that first line puts everything in its right place. God was not created, did not begin, and does not end. God created heaven and earth by His Word, not by some cosmic accident that leaves people with no Creator, no meaning, and no life after death.
John 1 brings Genesis into full light. John says, “In the beginning was the Word,” and the Word was with God and was God. Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem. Jesus took on flesh in Bethlehem. The Son was there in creation with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
Light in Genesis points straight to Jesus. God said, “Let there be light,” before the sun, moon, and stars were made. Jesus is the true Light, the glory of God shining into darkness. Revelation shows that His glory will be the light of the new Jerusalem, so no created light will be needed there.
John also shows the tragedy of a world that was made through Jesus but did not know Him. Jesus came to His own, yet many rejected Him. Grace still opens the door: those who receive Him and believe in His name receive the right to become children of God. Salvation is not earned through church attendance, giving, prayer, Bible study, or good works. Jesus only saves. Faith in His finished work is the issue.
Colossians confirms that Jesus is the image of the invisible God and the Creator of all things visible and invisible. Thrones, rulers, authorities, angels, people, and even the devil exist because Christ created them. Satan is not bigger than God. Satan is a created being who fell before the Creator.
The Father originates the plan, the Son speaks and carries out the plan, and the Holy Spirit brings life as breath and wind. The same God who created all things came to rescue fallen people, defeat the works of the devil, and bring believers out of darkness into the kingdom of light. Jesus is bigger than people think. He is outside time, space, and matter, yet He is present, faithful, loving, and near.
Faith in Christ also creates a burden for those who do not know Him. God sends no one to hell against their will; people receive or reject the One who came for them. Jesus remains the Light of the world, and His people are called to get into the dust, tell others the truth, and bring the name of Jesus into dark places.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus was present at creation John identifies Jesus as the eternal Word, not merely a good man born in history. Genesis shows God speaking creation into being, while John reveals that the Word through whom all things were made is Christ. Jesus cannot be reduced to a religious figure because creation itself came through Him. [44:36]
- 2. The true Light defeats darkness Genesis begins with light breaking into darkness, and John names Jesus as that true Light. Christ does not need the darkness to cooperate before He shines into it. His light reaches into failure, fear, confusion, and spiritual death without losing any of its power. [49:57]
- 3. Salvation rests on Jesus alone Faith receives the right to become a child of God because Jesus has done the saving work. Religious activity may matter in a believer’s walk, but none of it can replace trust in Christ. Works cannot carry a person into God’s house when the Son alone opens the way. [56:34]
- 4. Christ created every authority Colossians places every visible and invisible power under Jesus as Creator. Satan may attack, but he remains a created being who cannot overthrow the One who made him. Submission to God gives believers a firm place from which to resist the devil rather than fear him. [66:46]
- 5. Christ’s glory creates holy urgency Jesus came to rescue people from darkness and bring them into His kingdom of light. The reality of salvation should create more than private comfort; it should create compassion for people still rejecting Christ. His name belongs outside the church walls, in the dust, among people who need light.
