The Church: Unity, Presence, and Transformative Power

Summary

In the 14th chapter of Paul's first epistle to the Corinthians, we find a profound exploration of the nature and purpose of the Christian church. The Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthian church's issues, not by focusing solely on the problems themselves, but by elevating them to the broader context of the church's life and mission. This approach reveals a critical insight: many of our troubles stem from an inadequate understanding of what the church truly is.

Paul's method of addressing the Corinthian church's issues is consistent and profound. He emphasizes that the church is not merely a collection of individuals but an organic unity, a body where each member plays a vital role. This understanding is crucial in resolving conflicts and divisions, whether they arise from personal preferences, moral failures, or misunderstandings about spiritual gifts. The Apostle's solution is always rooted in the nature of the church as a living, dynamic body of believers united in Christ.

The presence of God is the defining characteristic of a true church. It is not the building, the rituals, or the social activities that make a church, but the tangible presence of the Living God among His people. This presence is manifested in life, power, and order. Where God is present, there is life and energy, a vibrancy that cannot be manufactured by human effort. Yet, this life must be accompanied by discipline and order, reflecting the nature of God Himself, who is a God of peace and not confusion.

Moreover, the church's mission is to bring understanding and knowledge to a world lost in ignorance. The church is called to be a light, offering the truth of God to those who are spiritually unlearned and unbelieving. This involves not only preaching and teaching but also living out the reality of God's presence in such a way that even an unbeliever can recognize it and be transformed.

Ultimately, the church's effectiveness in evangelism is not through grand campaigns or programs but through the authentic testimony of transformed lives. When individuals encounter the presence of God in a church, they are convicted of their sin, drawn to worship, and compelled to share their experience with others. This is the true essence of evangelism: a community of believers living in the presence of God and bearing witness to His transformative power.

Day 1: The Church as an Organic Unity
The church is not just a gathering of individuals but an organic unity where each member plays a vital role. This understanding is crucial for resolving conflicts and divisions within the church. When members see themselves as part of a living body, they recognize the importance of their contributions and the need for harmony. This perspective helps address issues arising from personal preferences, moral failures, or misunderstandings about spiritual gifts. By focusing on the church's nature as a dynamic body of believers united in Christ, conflicts can be resolved, and unity can be fostered. [07:35]

1 Corinthians 12:12-14 (ESV): "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many."

Reflection: Think of a conflict or division you have experienced within your church community. How can you contribute to resolving it by recognizing your role in the church's organic unity?

Day 2: The Defining Presence of God
The presence of God is the defining characteristic of a true church. It is not the building, rituals, or social activities that make a church, but the tangible presence of the Living God among His people. This presence is manifested in life, power, and order, reflecting the nature of God Himself, who is a God of peace and not confusion. Where God is present, there is life and energy, a vibrancy that cannot be manufactured by human effort. Yet, this life must be accompanied by discipline and order, ensuring that the church reflects God's nature. [25:06]

1 Kings 8:10-11 (ESV): "And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord."

Reflection: In what ways do you experience the presence of God in your church? How can you help cultivate an environment where His presence is more evident?

Day 3: The Church's Mission to Illuminate
The church's mission is to bring understanding and knowledge to a world lost in ignorance. It is called to be a light, offering the truth of God to those who are spiritually unlearned and unbelieving. This involves not only preaching and teaching but also living out the reality of God's presence in such a way that even an unbeliever can recognize it and be transformed. The church must prioritize the realization of God's presence, power, order, and truth, as this is essential for true worship and effective evangelism. [43:10]

Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV): "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

Reflection: How can you be a light in your community today, offering the truth of God to those around you?

Day 4: Authentic Testimony of Transformed Lives
Evangelism is most effective when it is the authentic testimony of transformed lives. When individuals encounter the presence of God in a church, they are convicted of their sin, drawn to worship, and compelled to share their experience with others. This is the true essence of evangelism: a community of believers living in the presence of God and bearing witness to His transformative power. The church's effectiveness in evangelism is not through grand campaigns or programs but through the authentic testimony of transformed lives. [52:17]

Acts 4:13 (ESV): "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus."

Reflection: Reflect on a time when you experienced God's transformative power. How can you share this testimony with someone who needs to hear it?

Day 5: Prioritizing God's Presence, Power, Order, and Truth
The church must prioritize the realization of God's presence, power, order, and truth. This is essential for true worship and effective evangelism, as it leads to conviction of sin and transformation of lives. When the church embodies these qualities, it becomes a beacon of hope and a source of life for those who are spiritually lost. By focusing on these priorities, the church can fulfill its mission and bring glory to God. [55:31]

Colossians 1:28-29 (ESV): "Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me."

Reflection: What steps can you take to prioritize God's presence, power, order, and truth in your personal life and within your church community?

Quotes

Most of our troubles arise from the fact that we have an inadequate or imperfect conception as to the nature of the Christian church. Now this comes out particularly clearly in this first epistle to the Corinthians. It's one of his longest Epistles, and you can describe it if you like as a kind of Omnibus epistle because in this epistle the Apostle takes up a number of questions and of problems which had Arisen in the church and which were producing havoc in the life of the church. [00:02:57]

A church, he says, is not a mere Gathering or collection of individuals. A church is a kind of organic Unity. It's like a lump or a mass of dough, and you put just a speck of Leaven into that, and because of the character of the dough and the Leen, this little speck will pollute the entire mass. Now, he says, realize that a church is an organic body in this way and therefore that this one man can pollute the life of the whole church. [00:07:23]

The church, he says, is like a loaf. It's not a mere addition of particular members. It's this organic vital Unity. It's like a loaf of bread. Now, he says, you're violating that, and you must realize the nature of the church. And so we come to these three great chapters 12, 13, and 14 in which he takes up perhaps what was the greatest problem of all, namely the problem of these spiritual gifts. [00:11:56]

A church is like a body. It's in verse 27 of chapter 12. Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular. But listen to him bringing out this tremendous sarcasm of his, and I think we need a great dose of sarcasm in the Christian church today to ridicule a lot of the nonsense that is prevalent amongst us. [00:13:56]

The presence of the Living God and yet, says Paul, this is the thing that matters. Will the men who's come amongst you go out reporting that God is among you of Truth? Now then, how do we know this? Here to me is the great question. How do we know that God is Among Us of a truth? Are we concerned about this? Is this our main concern? [00:24:55]

The first proof always of the presence of God is life and power and energy and vigor. Wherever God is, there is life. God is the author of all being. God is the creator of the whole universe. God said let there be light, and there was light. Power, he sustains it all by the word of his power. [00:26:05]

Where God is, there's life, there's power, there's Vigor. So this is our first test and must be of necessity. And you see how important it is at the present time. Go and ask some of these unbelievers and unlearned people out in the world why they no longer attend a place of worship, and I'm afraid the answer you'll get far too often is this. [00:27:08]

The church is in the world to teach. The Blessed Lord himself said I am the light of the world. He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life. And he said you are the light of the world, and this is what we are for. Paul says to the Philippians that we are like lights or luminaries in the heavens holding forth the word of life. [00:43:46]

The church has the only knowledge that the world needs tonight, and it is our business to give it. And if men and women won't listen, well, I say we still go on preaching to them, and when things have gone from bad to worse, they will come back and they listen. They have no light, they have no knowledge, they don't know where they're going, everything is drifting. [00:44:30]

The church's effectiveness in evangelism is not through grand campaigns or programs but through the authentic testimony of transformed lives. When individuals encounter the presence of God in a church, they are convicted of their sin, drawn to worship, and compelled to share their experience with others. This is the true essence of evangelism: a community of believers living in the presence of God and bearing witness to His transformative power. [00:52:17]

The realization of the presence of God. Do we feel that unless we've known this, that we've really failed and have missed the greatest thing of all? So I ask the question, how do we know that God is Among Us of a truth? The Apostle tells us here that even an unlearned man, an unbeliever, can tell and go out and report it. Can we do so? [00:55:31]

Let us never be satisfied in any gathering without a realization of the presence of the Living God. Let's pray for this constantly before we come, when we've come, always. Let's make certain that God is Among Us, and let's be satisfied with nothing else, nothing less than the realization of the presence, the power, the order, the light, and the knowledge, the truth which come alone from the presence of the Living God.
