John confronts the lie that Jesus was merely a man at the cross, as though the divine Christ came upon Him at His baptism and left before His death. First John 5:6-13 brings the receipts: Jesus came by water and blood. The water points to His baptism, the blood points to His crucifixion, and both testify to the same Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Nothing changed. The divine Christ baptized in the river is the same divine Christ who hung on the cross.
The Holy Spirit gives an impeccable testimony because He is the Spirit of truth. The Spirit identified Jesus as God’s Messiah at His baptism and continues to make Jesus known in human hearts. The Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit stand in agreement with the historic facts of Christ’s incarnation, baptism, death, resurrection, and saving work. The testimony is not built on religious feeling or somebody’s opinion. God Himself has testified concerning His Son.
John then presses the issue home: if people receive the witness of flawed men, God’s witness is greater. Unbelief does not make Christ less true. Unbelief calls God a liar because God has declared that Jesus is the Christ, God in the flesh, and the only Savior. Belief does not determine whether the testimony is true. Belief determines whether a person receives the life God has given in His Son.
The testimony is also indispensable because eternal life is found nowhere except in Christ. “He who has the Son has life.” That is plain, straightforward, and exclusive. Eternal life is a free gift, but the Son of God is the only means of receiving it. False teachers and the enemy keep trying to stir up doubt, confusion, and defeat, but God’s declaration does not move. Those who have Christ have life, and nothing can separate them from the love of Christ.
John writes to believers so they may know they have eternal life. Assurance rests on God’s Word, not on the ups and downs of feelings, performance, church background, or denominational preference. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ brings a person from death into life. Good works, obedience, and fellowship matter as byproducts of the relationship, but they do not create the relationship. God’s testimony settles it: Jesus is the Son of God, and there is no life apart from Him.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus came by water and blood. The baptism and crucifixion cannot be separated without destroying the gospel. Christ did not become divine for a season and then die as an ordinary man. The Son who fulfilled all righteousness in the water is the same Son who shed His blood as the true Passover Lamb. [33:08]
- 2. God’s witness is greater than man’s. Human testimony has limits, blind spots, and failures, yet people rely on it every day. God’s testimony concerning His Son comes from the Spirit of truth and cannot be improved upon. Faith rests on what God has declared, not on cultural approval or personal uncertainty. [40:14]
- 3. Unbelief calls God a liar. The rejection of Christ is not merely an intellectual disagreement with religious claims. God has testified that His Son is the Christ, the Savior, and the giver of life. To refuse that testimony is to reject the God who spoke it. [44:52]
- 4. The Son alone gives eternal life. Eternal life is not found in sincerity, morality, religion, or a church label. The gift comes only in Christ because Christ Himself is the resurrection and the life. Those who have the Son possess what death cannot take away. [49:57]
- 5. Assurance rests on God’s Word. Feelings rise and fall, and spiritual struggles can cloud the mind. God’s promise remains definite: whoever hears Christ’s Word and believes has passed from death into life. Salvation rests on Christ’s finished work and God’s faithful testimony. [53:50]
