John writes as though he is giving the church one of God’s last, urgent words: hold fast to what has been known from the beginning. The apostles heard, saw, and touched the Word of Life, Jesus Christ, and their witness establishes the true gospel: Jesus came from God, is God, came in the flesh, died, rose, ascended, and gives eternal life.
The gospel does not save people merely so they can know truth or behave rightly. Jesus saves people for life, freedom, light, and flourishing with him. Righteousness matters because it is the way of life, not because it earns belonging. Chapter 3 has made that plain: people belong to Jesus because of his work, not because they did anything to make themselves belong. Then those who belong to him practice righteousness, loving God and loving people in the way Jesus loved.
The heart, however, does not always agree with the way of Jesus. The heart can condemn, rationalize, and even sound spiritual. The Spirit of God fills and seals those who belong to Christ, empowering them to live his way, but the presence of the Spirit raises a real question: how can anyone know which voice is speaking? John answers in 1 John 4:1 by telling the beloved not to believe every spirit, but to test the spirits.
False prophets reveal that false teaching is never merely a human problem. Spirits stand behind claims made in God’s name, and the spirit of the antichrist is already at work wherever Christ is distorted. John makes the test beautifully simple, though never shallow: the Spirit of God always tells the truth about Jesus. Any voice that changes who Jesus is, what Jesus has done, what Jesus teaches, or who people are because of him, is not from God.
The prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel both fail this test when they make human behavior the means of earning God’s approval or securing a certain kind of life. Both forget that belonging begins with grace. Jesus does not become a reward for faithful performance, and suffering or material lack does not become a badge that proves maturity.
The Spirit never leads beyond Jesus into some supposedly deeper, newer secret. The Spirit glorifies Jesus, declares what belongs to Jesus, and brings people more deeply into the Jesus revealed by the apostles. God has preserved that apostolic witness in Scripture. The church therefore tests every inward impression, every teacher, every prophet, and every claimed word from God against the real Jesus in God’s Word, in biblical community, by the Spirit.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus saves people for life Jesus did not die merely to create people who can repeat correct answers or maintain religious behavior. Truth and righteousness are the means by which his people live in freedom, light, and life with him. The goal is not bare correctness, but deep abiding in the One who is life. [05:32]
- 2. Belonging comes before righteous living Grace establishes belonging before obedience begins. Righteousness identifies those who belong to Jesus, but it never purchases a place with him. Any gospel that makes faithfulness the price of God’s acceptance has changed the gospel at its root. [07:35]
- 3. The heart must be discipled The heart can sound convincing, peaceful, and even biblical while pulling away from the way of Jesus. God gives his people authority by the Spirit to prevail upon the heart rather than simply obey every inner impulse. Peace is not proof when Scripture and biblical community expose a false direction. [46:06]
- 4. Every voice must be tested by Jesus False teaching becomes dangerous because it changes Christ, not simply because it contains a minor mistake. The decisive question is whether a claim tells the truth about who Jesus is, what he has done, what he teaches, and who his people are because of him. Getting Jesus right safeguards everything else. [37:08]
- 5. The Spirit leads deeper into Christ The Spirit does not offer a truth that advances beyond Jesus or competes with the apostolic witness. The Spirit glorifies the Son and faithfully presses his people deeper into the Christ revealed in Scripture. God’s Word and biblical community protect the church from being biblically illiterate and spiritually gullible.
