Shine Where You Are: Taking Over Territories

Matthew 5:14-16 calls God’s people to shine where they are. Jesus says, “You are the light of the world,” not “you will become light.” Light is not something believers are trying to earn by fasting, struggling, or begging. Light is already part of the identity of the child of God in Christ, and identity precedes assignment.

John 8 shows Jesus as the light of the world, and those who follow him “will never walk in darkness.” Darkness cannot comprehend light, contend with light, or deprive light. Light does not complain about the environment it is in. Light just shines, gives illumination, and changes the atmosphere around it.

Ephesians 5 says believers were once darkness, but now they are light in the Lord. First Peter 2 says God called his people out of darkness into his wonderful light. God is not asking his children to look for light from outside themselves. God is calling them to live out the reality of the light already placed in them.

Matthew’s image of the lampstand shows that light is meant to be seen. A lamp is not lit and then placed under a bowl. God places people in visible spaces so his glory can be reflected through them. Shyness cannot become the excuse for hiding light, because “shyness is highness.” When focus stays on self, fear grows. When focus turns to God, boldness rises.

Peter denied Christ three times, but the Holy Spirit made him bold enough to preach until three thousand were saved. Saul persecuted the church, but an encounter with Christ turned him into Paul. Mary was a young girl, but she said, “Be it unto me according to your word.” God uses ordinary places and ordinary people when surrender replaces hiding.

The lampstand represents placement. The home, workplace, school, neighborhood, business, friendship, and daily interaction are not ordinary places only. They are platforms. That place God has placed a person is the stage, the pulpit, the place to shine.

Matthew 5:16 also guards the motive. Good works are not for self promotion. Good works point people to the Father. Integrity when dishonesty is easier, kindness when people are difficult, excellence when no one is watching, forgiveness when offense is real, and boldness when faith must be represented all become visible expressions of invisible faith.

Joseph shined in prison, Daniel in Babylon, Esther in the palace, and Lydia in business. Faith must put steps to prayer. God has already given permission to shine, so the call is simple: do not dim the light, do not unsalt the salt, and shine where God has placed the life.
