TEACH US TO PRAY: HOUSE OF PRAYER

The disciples saw Jesus preach, deliver people, raise the dead, walk on water, and do all the miraculous stuff. Yet the one thing they asked him to teach was prayer. That question reveals the source behind everything in Jesus’ life. Prayer was not the emergency exit after every other plan failed. Prayer was the first resort, the place of communion with the Father.

Matthew 6 first shows how not to pray. Jesus removes the idea that prayer is performance. The hypocrites wanted people to hear them, but the Father wanted the door shut and the heart open. Prayer that needs an audience already got its reward. Jesus also removes the idea that prayer works by babbling, repeating words as if God can be manipulated. God is not convinced by eloquent speeches. Prayer is not informing God. Prayer is surrender, relationship, and transformation.

Jesus then gives the pattern. Prayer begins with adoration: “Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.” Prayer starts with worship before requests, because problems shrink when the Father becomes large in the heart. Adoration detaches the soul from the noise of the world and enlarges awareness of who God is. The word “Father” is not small. Jesus brings intimacy where fear and distance once stood, and adoption means sons and daughters may come boldly, not as hirelings.

Prayer then moves into supplication: “May your kingdom come.” Prayer is surrender before asking. Many prayers sound like, “God, bless my plans,” but Jesus teaches, “God, replace my plans.” Gethsemane shows that surrender is not cheap. Christ faced the cup, the thorns, the beating, and the cross, yet gave himself to the Father’s will.

Daily bread teaches dependence. The manna in the wilderness could not be stockpiled, because dependence cannot be stockpiled. God does not usually give tomorrow’s grace today, because tomorrow’s relationship belongs to tomorrow. Confession restores intimacy, not legal status. The courtroom verdict in Christ is “not guilty,” but the family relationship can still be hindered by guilt, shame, and withdrawal. Forgiveness also has to flow outward, because bitterness poisons the one who holds it.

Deliverance reminds the church that prayer is warfare. Temptation is not beaten by self confidence, but by dependence. Peter’s confidence failed, but prayer trains sinful loves, exposes roots, and keeps the branch connected to the vine. The call to prayer is not a shopping list. It is adoration, surrender, confession, forgiveness, and deliverance before the Father.
